Life Goes On: Continuing Careers of Ex Mets - 2012

Jason started what turned into one of the best games of the Willie Randolph era, though his participation in it only ensured there'd be a great deficit to overcome. Per Warner Wolf, if you had the Mets coming out on top with Jason Vargas and Ambiorix Burgos as your pitchers after spotting the Cubs a four-run lead AND not starting most of your regulars...you win! I was at that one. good times. hell, you might even argue that was one of the last moments the Mets were come from behind pros that had any magic left in them. -
Davidoff publishes his ballot and gives Mike Piazza a cold clinical no. http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/baseballinsider/my_hall_of_fame_ballot_rC1PsqLR9XhGn3vaUJMYNL#axzz2FWjS3xyI Can't argue too much with him, as he came armed with data. I'll just say that our searches for a final bottom-line number on a player's value hasn't necessarily given us a number that adequately accounts for the greater value in offense when it comes from a catcher. These guys have a harder time maintaining peak productivity because they play a position that allows other guys to be productive. That's something. yeah, Piazza was better than some of those guys, just not for as long, but catcher HAS to play into it. At least prorate his WAR to the average playing time of the other guys. Of course, part of the problem is they should've put guys like Bagwell and Martinez in last year, so there aren't so many good candidates this year.

We'd have to have agreement on banking and monetary regulations. Ain't gonna happen. Besides that, would anyone want a world without purple ten dollar bills? I'll drop the purple bills for one with Dickey's face on it. Someone with photoshop get working on this NOW!!!! would be a good candidate for Amazin' Avenue's goodbye Dickeyface contest http://www.amazinavenue.com/2012/12/18/3779274/the-amazin-avenue-r-a-dickey-face-contest-strikes-back

I guess the part of this that I don't understand is how many people immediately perceived the piece as a plant by Mets management. I never saw Davidoff as a mouthpiece for the Wilpons. Am I wrong? Some people are broken records. They have a narrative and every 'incident' can be shoe-horned into it. This piece absolves the media of all blame for even asking the questions, because it was their job and they're acting on behalf the fans. Where that fails is that A. if getting this information to the fans is part of the job, it's ALSO part of Dickey's job. If he fails to answer he's ducking the media but if he answers it's not the place for it? come on. and B. It's not like this was the one and only chance for us as fans to hear anything about Dickey's side of the negotiation. He's suggesting if they didn't ask then we'd have no idea what was going on.

While it didn't work out so well last year, I think it's premature to declare Lucas Duda and Kirk Nieuwenhuis and even Mike Baxter as AAAA guys or platooners.

This was planned surgery right? I was surprised when I saw the release but then I vaguely remember it being planned. who knows..can't hurt might right? We still got Parnell, and that new guy from Baltimore looks promising imo.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: His parents, his sister-in-law, and his nephew are not public figures. Just because the internet allows you to track them down doesn't mean it's not creepy. wife and kid of a public figure. you'll note I didn't post them, just mentioned what I saw in the 15 minutes I spent looking. And the pictures I saw were mainly the ones retweeted by Collin. The Internet is not allowing me to track them down, they're broadcasting it to the Internet.

Edgy MD wrote: I dunno. I mean, Reyes had a track record, and the Mets had plenty of holdover personnel with reams of files on him. The question that remained was whether his health-impeded seasons would continue. He had totaled 169 games total over the two previous years, with a .750 OPS. I think what kept Sandy aloof was concern about whether that was the player he was becoming. I think that concern would have been there had Sandy been aboard a year earlier. It would have been for me, at any rate. maybe. it's really water under the bridge at this point anyway, but it seemed like maybe with a little more time to get to know him, really read his medical records, have a couple of meetings on it, etc, maybe things go differently. He had about a billion things to do and then was suddenly stripped of all financial flexibility shortly after taking the job.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think a good New Years Resolution would be to try to be less creepy. welcome to 2013. This is the world we live in. me googling new players on the team is extremely tame compared to what employers do to prospective employees. Wouldn't be irregular for the Blue Jays to have hired a PI to track Dickey and/or dig up stuff. People are going ga-ga over a baby being born in England to a royal couple. Every celebrity's love love is public. I think googling for a little personal info on our 40ish entertainers is pretty tepid.

found his (parents?) address and phone number, his sister in law, nephew, but no girlfriend.

I think if they fired Omar one season earlier Alderson would've seen, evaluated, and extended Reyes for roughly what he was willing to offer in free agency.

Those white caps were the truly horrendous "Stars and Stripes" model that they made everyone wear for Independence Day weekend (among other occasions). You guys know the whole stars-n-stripes hats was a Fred Wilpon Thing. It is tied somehow to the veterans charity he was (is?) trying to get going with Seaver as the spokesman. http://web.welcomebackveterans.org/index

Edgy MD wrote: I don't know about words like "serious" or "misjudged." I just think Sandy had his ceiling and was willing to take the team's money walk away when another team went higher. What's for us to judge, I think, is whether or not he was right to walk away. yeah, not a penny more than he was worth.. It seems like Sandy DID have a window to match if he really wanted to. Same with Dickey, who could still be a Met with a signature and less money.

A. Dickey" was. Dickey outpitched Strasburg through six. Parnell and Frankie blew the game. I remember that game about as well as any Dickey start. That was the pre-injury, better than the Big Train Strasburg. Often, when I log onto this site with Dickey on my mind, I'm reminded of a terrific photo of RA snapped by Ceetar a few years ago. It's an overhead shot of Dickey capturing the pitcher right after releasing his pitch. Dickey's follow-through momentum carried him to the front of the mound which, from Ceetar;s persepective, looks round, but flat, like a sumo wrestler's ring. Dickey is in full Dickeyface mode, growling towards the plate, defending his section of the infield ferociously. It's one of my favorite action shots of Dickey. Thanks! Now..where did I save said picture.. *digs*

I tend to completely avoid these types of people, not work to discredit them. If people have good things to write, they get out. I used the word "discredit" to refer to what you brought on yourself. But of course you were trying to discredit him. only in the binary sense. Take a poll, "Do you respect Keith Law" I'm voting no. I'm not sure why this needs a debate.

I could say "Hey, John Meyer thinks the Mets trade was groovy!" but that's just another collection of opinion. relatedly, I also don't need Rubin's anonymous scouts saying things like: I usually criticize the Mets, but this time I'm going to give it a thumbs up! Clearly because I normally attack them, my praise must carry more meaning! or Rubin tweeting how weird it is to get texts praising the Mets.
