  1. Glavine was not a good hitting pitcher, in fact he was one of the worst hitters in the league over the last 20-25 years or so to get a certain minimum amount of PA.
  2. Church might have contributed more (anti-semite? where was this?) if he hadn't gotten concussed.
  3. vtmet wrote: it does make me wonder: How often does yesterday's starter suit up for today's game? Is it a requirement? They just threw 120 pitches, no sane team would allow him to pitch in the next game, so what does it accomplish to require him to be there? yes, but he's the perfect extra pinch runner or pinch bunter. mostly just camaraderie and what not. it's his job, he's supposed to be there. Baseball players don't really get PTO days.

  5. I'm going tonight. Wonder if I can sneak peaks at the Isles game in the Caesar's club. (yeah, the Jay thing was a joke)
  6. Remember remember the 5th of..May.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: Can we discuss the amount of bridge jumping that would be going on had the Mets dropped a Bayvian contract to sign Upton? B.J.? Didn't want him. I asserted that I'd rather have had Pagan.
  8. vtmet wrote: What surprises me with how many LH'd hitters absolutely suck vs LHP, that more natural Lefty's don't learn how to bat RH'd... Because you see so many righties if you can hit you're probably good enough to be getting by that way, and are never forced to the bubble where you're desperate to try anything. And given the mentality of baseball players, they probably figure they're better off getting the reps in lefty vs lefty and getting better the way they feel natural than figuring out the other side of the plate.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: btw, add the above scenario and all its permutations as reason # 35,487 as to why the DH rule suxxx. indeed. screw the AL.
  10. Centerfield wrote: Terry's move in the tenth last night (letting Parnell see a pitch, sending Valdespin, then getting Baxter only after he made it) was the first time I can remember ever going from: "What the fuck is he doing?" to "OH! That makes perfect sense!" I'm not kidding. That was a great fucking move. It was shockingly crafty. It sounds mean, but it's a level of strategy I don't really expect from Terry. I love it, it IS a great move. Now I'm surprised I haven't seen it before.

  12. gut-wrenching loss for the Braves. love it.

  14. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Edgy MD wrote: ... Justin Turner's batting fifth. Why oh why oh why? Because he hits lefties better than Ike Davis (In fact, a whole .032 OPS better over their careers) and better than he hits righties (a whole -.043 better)
  15. I thought the bad news was Lucas Duda batting 6th.

    Brown Town

MFS62 wrote: While they were discussing Brown, I hope Collins had a chance to talk to some of the coaches who saw Lagares play last year. I followed the minor league box scores pretty closely last year, and it seemed that Lagares hit much better in the top half of the order than when batting in the lower half. Maybe he felt he had to try for more power down there and changed his swing. I don't know where to find data to back this up, but it was noticeable. Later Don't see batting order splits, but he DID hit much better against pitchers older than him (presumably these are the retread/non-prospect guys and the younger ones are the actual talent?)

Edgy MD wrote: Well, while I agree that Byrd likely won't always be the better outfielder, (a) we don't currently have Nieuwenhuis, ( center isn't the only issue, as Byrd has looked better in right, too, and (c) if you really think it's too close to call, then reason usually suggests you send down the guy with options. Yeah, i'm just lobbying for Byrd myself. Options matter, but I'd rather play the younger guy if I think he has any chance of helping ever.

Edgy MD wrote: Actually, while I don't disagree to the general point, I think Byrd has looked better on D than Cow. Yeah, probably. Don't know if it'll be that way going forward, and we have Lagares, Valdespin and Nieuwenhuis so it's not like the CF thing matters. It's really six of one in terms of which guy to get rid of. I'd even accept "the coin said tails" as reasonable justification of one over the other.
  19. question: Is Baseball-Reference trying to Mets By The Numbers irrelevant? http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2013-uniform-numbers.shtml

Release Byrd. there is zero reason to keep him. he's older, can't play center, is slower. No reason to keep him over Cowgill besides the Trash Men.
  21. That's NL Pitcher of the Month to you.
  22. Discussed this some on this week's Amazin' Avenue Audio Podcast i.e. it's infuriating, but I'm not sure Josh Satin is the answer and I wouldn't put anyone else there at this point. I believe he WILL figure it out. We also mentioned how he's about to get pretty expensive after this season, and if he's going to slump like this it might not be worth paying him.

  24. metirish wrote: But would Wally make the Baxter's, the Recker's better players?, they are what they are. During the late innings last night Keith was getting exasperated as is his wont with the the outfield this time for being too deep and not moving in with the game on the line " you don't need a coach to tell you this", "this is baseball 101". I'm watching thinking wow that's damning right there. difference of style though. Duda, for instance, is much more comfortable coming in. Granted, you don't want to be too deep, but one person's too deep is another's just right. Keith has different feelings about things like the shift and guarding the line too. Keith's certainly biased, having playing defense at a higher level than the average baseball player, especially these days. But there have been more examples than that too. Is the bench coach supposed to be double checking positioning? You gotta get stuff like this ingrained though, and isn't that why they fired Mookie?
