  3. Frayed Knot wrote: So Greg Burke gets promoted after a month in the minors, throws five pitches (one hit out of the park), then gets demoted again (quite possibly to resurface in 10 days time). As long as there is an injury it'll probably only be 9 days.

With rising strikeout rates, defense becomes less and less important. Yes, and the murder rate is less severe now what with all the population growth. bad corollary. I suggest "The # of policemen on duty is less important with the decrease in crime." Although that's not perfect because you can argue that one's causing the other. Poor defense is not causing there to be more strikeouts. My point stands though. If there are 1% fewer defensive chances in the game, the amount each chance contributes to winning a ballgame goes down by roughly 1%. Also the difference between a good player and a sub-par one goes down as well.

I do propose a more typical MI for next year though, allowing the Mets to carry Satin as the backup #Bman and get some of (presumably anyway) Ike's starts against lefties.
  7. At least we get the better announcers (well, in NY where I assume that 14% covers?) this way. Screw you Verducci
  8. And after Serena had summarily disposed of Brett Gardner. That means that Mrs. Met would destroy Gardner.
  9. Ahh, Fangraphs only goes back to '56 with assists. B-R suggests that it's only going back to '54 but then includes all those old guys. I suspect those are simply outfielders at that point. For LF, CF, RF fielding stats, we only have reliable data since 1954, so all leaders are since 1954.
  10. Assists by NL Centerfielders in 2013 1. Lagares (NYM): 11 2. McCutchen (PIT): 9 3. Pollock (ARI): 7 T4. Revere (PHI): 6 T4. Choo (CIN): 6 What is the single season team record for assists by a centerfielder? Seems like Lagares might be getting close. Also - I heard on the radio tonight (WFAN?) that Satin has reached base safely in 29 consecutive games, a team rookie record. Later Andrew Jones had 20 in '98. Del Unser had 20 in '68. Beltran had 16 in '99. I suspect this is one of those things you don't get a real chance at except your fist year or two.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: I'm afraid Lagares is gonna get the payback pitch. gets him on base. would help.
  12. Frayed Knot wrote: It's actually Alex Wood (Travis is the one on the Cubs). Alex is a 23 y/o rookie making his 22nd ML appearance, his 7th ML start, and 3rd ML start vs the Mets. He started the 1st game of the June 18th DH but was pulled after just 3 innings down 1-0 He started again on July 26 and we chased him in the 5th while the Mets were leading 4-3. Mets went on the win both games. He's sporting a 2.61 ERA; 1.026 WHiP overall. dammit, that was sloppy of me. Too much Wood around here.
  13. Robert Alexander Wood versus Jon Niese Juan Lagares - CF Daniel Murphy - 2B Marlon Byrd - RF Andrew Brown - LF Josh Satin - 1B Justin Turner - SS Wilmer Flores - 3B John Buck - C Jonathon Niese - LHP
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: Termination pay and arbitration aren't the same thing. Termination is when a non-guaranteed deal is not picked up after ST has started but prior to OD. The player receives something for his time depending on exactly when he's released. When a team walks away from arbitration -- either by not offering or by walking away from the result -- it's like no contract ever existed; the player becomes a FA and is free to hunt for a deal elsewhere. I don't believe there's a financial settlement due to the player in this case although I don't claim to be up on all the specifics. I think there still is..something. But I was more referencing Grimm's question. Arbitration Is decided earlier on in Spring Training.
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: Teams CAN walk away from arbitrated contracts if they don't like the result. The player then immediately becomes a FA. It's a somewhat different set of guidelines that governs non-guaranteed invite type of deals where, if a player is released by a certain date they owe him X pct of the amount and by a later but still pre-opening day date they owe him a greater pct. Yeah, wasn't sure if arbitrated contracts counted as "real" contracts or not, but makes sense that they would. (for all three years? do options matter?) It's under Termination Pay in the CBA. gotta be before 16 days prior to the start of the season. If it's after that, but still spring training, they get an extra 45 days, and if the season starts, they get termination pay equal to the full year. If the guy has minor league provisions/rate in his contract and is terminated before that day, he only gets the minor league rate.
  16. MFS62 wrote: Some help, please. Its also the first Sunday for the US Open. What will be the best route into the parking lot avoid the tennis crowd? (coming from the Whitestone Bridge) Later nobody goes to the first Sunday for the US Open do they? I never come from the Whitestone, so not sure where it dumps out? I usually head west on Roosevelt though (so maybe College Point BLVD, right on Roosevelt? Actually google maps suggests that way anyway) and turn right into the parking lot once you pass Citi and Shea. You can get in from the water side too, but the lots on the 126th/junkyard side are for media/employees, so don't go there.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Isn't there some rule that says that if a player is released before March 31, the team only has to pay a portion of his contract? Obviously, that doesn't apply to multi-year contacts, but I think it does apply to one-year deals. It's possible that such a rule, if it ever existed, may no longer be in effect. There's something like that. It's not the 31st though, it's closer to the 21st. I can't find the specifics in the CBA (although maybe they did get rid of it) It only applied to a specific type of player, that might've been arbitration (because these guys are still under initial contracts right?) raise guys. It also might only apply to guys that actually get arbitration, because the "agree to terms" thing most teams do to avoid arbitration might be a new contract?
  18. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: "Very good glove" might be overstating it a bit on Young Mr. Young. "Athletic, and great at catching balls on the run; struggles with virtually every other aspect of outfield defense" might be a little more on-point. Also, for a guy who has VERY little power compared to his peers, he walks at a below-average career rate (8.7% career). Also also, he's a well-below-average major-league hitter for said career. i.e. he's fast.
  19. Eric Young Jr really one has one tool, but it's a good one at least.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: It's a little tough to compare starters with relievers, pitches with guys on bases with pitches with the bases empty. Good research needs good controls. I haven't clicked and read deeply. Maybe they do have controls. You can break it up by splits, which probably helps. I didn't dig that far, I was just grazing the surface as I noticed it while looking at Ike Davis' OSwing%
  21. This is fun. Mike Pelfrey, minimum 30IP in a season, is tied for the fastest season ever in 2007 (72.2ip) at 15.9 second with Mark Buehrle (who's the best cumulatively as well). Jose Valverde in 2012 took 32.8 seconds between pitches, or more than TWICE as long! '12 Peralta 32.3, '11 Papelbon 31.9, '07 Betancourt 31.9, '13 Peralta 31.8, '12 Broxton 31.8 were also twice as long.
  22. same stat is in the Pitch F/X Pitch Discipline pagefor pitchers as well. Edinson Volquez,Jeremy Hellickson,Edwin Jackson,David Price,Hisashi Iwakuma are the top five. 25.7 for Volquez this year. ahh, right, that's filtered by qualified so Paps drops out. hang on.. Papelbon comes in 8th this year (min 30 IP) with 28.9. Joel Peralta (Rays) leads with 31.8. Latroy Hawkins at 55 is the slowest Met, 25.3 If you go cumulative from 2007 with 100IP, Papelbon is second with 30.7. (Must be something about the Sox/AL that makes it worse) But Rafael Betancourt leads with 30.8. Hawkins is 27.2 and 10th on the list.
  23. The Braves have soared to a 15 1/2-game lead in the National League East, in part by beating up on teams within their division. Hey! The Mets have been the exception, playing the Braves even through their first 14 meetings. oh, okay. Atlanta will get the chance to change that on Tuesday night, when it opens a two-game set at Citi Field. Hey! Radio: ATL: 680 AM/93.7 FM, WNNX 100.5 NYM: WFAN 660/101.9 FM, WEPN 1050 TV: ATL: SPSO NYM: SNY Zack Wheeler versus Brandon Beachy. 7:10 pm.

Lefty Specialist wrote: I was against re-signing Byrd for a long time, but considering the dearth of outfield talent in the near-term pipeline, I wouldn't be against re-upping him for another year. Even two if it wasn't expensive. That's what a lot of people said about Hairston too, and he's not really been great this year. The Mets could use that that player in 2014 more than in 2013 though probably, and Byrd is better. On the other hand, he's 36 and having a career year by far. That doesn't feel like the guy to invest in. I hope the Mets invest/trade/acquire/promote/steal/grow an outfielder or two better than Byrd and that it's not really an issue, but I guess we'll see.
  25. Apparently Fangraphs has been keeping a Pace stat, time between pitches, since 2007. The leader over that span is Carlos Pena with 27.6. Tied for second at 26 is Robinson Cano and Manny Ramirez. Highest Met is Scott Hairston at 52. 23.3 seconds.
