John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I think that's the idea behind that expression, though I must say I hate hate hate breaking up sentences with three initials in parentheses (TIP) especially when, in this case, it doesn't designate anything official (DAO). Where's this coming from anyway? If HLR is being used so the writer doesn't have to type High Leverage Reliever a billion times in a post, i'm all good. This really just speaks to the Mets offense more than anything. no big leads.

MFS62 wrote: I hope Tanaka means "Clone of Irabu". Later I think it means "past a diving Jeter" He's an average K groundball pitcher and the Yankees infield is laughable. (Not that yielding fly balls in that place is a good idea) I could easily see a FIP of 3.2 with an ERA of 4.6. Actually Jon Niese is a similar type pitcher. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/looking-for-comps-for-masahiro-tanaka/ is a pretty good article about what type of pitcher Tanaka is/could be.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Fuck Tanaka anyway. 7/155 Plus $20 to the Japanese team. The Yankees are like a kid who see a shiny toy and must have it. Sure, sometimes it's a good toy, but they better hope that toy doesn't yield a lot of ground balls, particularly to the left side.

This is dumb, because any real research should reveal that the Mets/WFAN had it right last year with Josh and Howie. And they worked in Jim Duquette plenty. There is room for Cliff Floyd without jettisoning Josh. I liked Eddie C well enough but I also doubt he's a guy I'd miss.

I could feel him watching me pee. I'm not sure he was cook, clean or bartend material. I didn't want him touching my paper towel! not just one, TWO bathroom attendants. (there's another almost secret bathroom behind the beer garden area, pass the hill where Kranepool was on the right) I knew the thing wouldn't go off right without cinnamon mouthwash in a sports bar after all. I have no idea what McFadden's was thinking, particularly with the food. Someone asked at the bar at 12 about food and the bartender didn't know and had to go ask. And people didn't show up to clean (i.e. pick up empty glasses from around the place) until about 5 or 6. I know originally McFadden's was making some noise about having another event piggy back the QBC and start at 7, which would've just been ridiculous. Yeah, the lack of the store being open was dumb. At the very least bring some Wright, Harvey, Wheeler type shirts for sale at the Mets booth. It's funny, the same mysterious bigwigs that think foul things up and probably think bad things about The7Line probably drove up t-shirt sales for him by not thinking to open the store. The Mets participated more than I thought they would though, even donating some tickets for some of the prizes I believe, so at least "they're trying" for whatever that's worth. Hopefully the people that do care are the ones that stick and the other guys are slowly pushed out and retire. Of course, if one of those guys is "Jeff Wilpon" who knows.

Kong76 wrote: I saw you yesterday Ceets, wasn't sure it was you until I saw your picture on facebook. Sorry for looking you right in the eye and ignoring you! :=( I didn't even see you. Or maybe I did? I don't know. I was sorta in a daze the last couple of hours. Too much socializing, I'm not cut out for it. It's alright though, I'm pretty sure I had a conversation with at least 2 people without introducing myself. McFadden's is a nice space, but it's not really run or wired real well. That new backroom 'beer garden' (garden's have trees. and are outside. with benches. sorry, different rant) was nice to be able to have two things going at once though without audio clashing. They haven't cleaned the place since the last days of the season (if they cleaned it then) we found all sorts of junk setting up. ticket stubs, plastic cups, umbrellas.. seats put on top of tables were stuck to the tables when we peeled them off. There was mold growing in some of the mixer bottles behind the beer garden bar and fruit flies in the tequila. The first Guinness I had was okay, but the second one didn't taste right. old dirty taps. Who knows, the Mets support the idea, at least most of them do. They had a booth and a panel. The media relations folk like it. Will Carafello was apparently walking around tweeting pictures. That's probably the coolest part actually. He's the new social media guy, and he went basically anonymously, I assume he genuinely wanted to get a feel for the Mets fan community. Maybe some bigwig gets squeamish about the idea of getting involved more formally, because there are so many damn layers to the organization and it only generally takes one guy to get squeamish to kill something, but it wouldn't kill them to just let us use the Caesar's Club. You'd have to pay a couple of employees or whatever but they do stuff like that all the time. They obviously already have all this stuff set up, because they do corporate events and gatherings in the club. Even if you make QBC pay cost and didn't make a profit for this one fan event would probably go a long way towards either A. keeping the price lower or B. being able to pay for another good appearance or two.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The uni panel I felt went pretty good, especially after a kinda slow start we got people's attention and eventually had to be hooked off the stage. Russ Gompers, who does the Mets' uni embroidery, was terrific fun and a good guy to know. Definitely going to need buffer time between panels next time. What was that kid asking out about at the end? Sidd Finch's uniform number?

we didn't have one yet right? Maryanne Garry, wife of John Lannan. They met at Sienne College.

the mic giving out and the the Kranepool audio were both a tribute to how crappy McFaddens is. The audio pipes nicely into the elevated bar area, but not to the rest place. A lot of it's on video too. memory cards filled up and batteries died, so probably not all of it, but a lot. I assume that will eventually be parsed and shared. I caught some of the Mets execs panel, and it was mostly ticket fluff and thought processes of some of that type of stuff. I rolled my eyes a few times. Why they don't do a fanfest was their typical "don't want to tax the alumni would rather them come spread out during the season. And it's not authentic if we do it (i.e. you'll make fun of us)" You think they'd learn that it doesn't have to be Seaver every time, that you could call up Cliff Floyd or John Olerud or Glendon Rusch and it'd be fun. (and yes, I'm sure there would be someone that would say "why are they giving us these guys and not 'real' guys?'" screw em.)

Lannan's probably the better hitter, but his range at SS probably makes Quintanilla look amazing.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Adam Rubin wrote: Johan Santana's no-hitter -- the only one in Mets history -- arguably has an asterisk. But it would have stood as a no-hitter, even if the new instant-replay rules had been in effect on June 1, 2012, according to Major League Baseball. To backtrack, Carlos Beltran hit a sixth-inning line drive down the third-base line, which was ruled foul by third-base ump Adrian Johnson. In actuality, the ball struck the chalk line and should have been ruled a fair ball. Under the new replay rules, only outfield fair/foul calls are able to be reviewed -- not those in the infield. And by infield, MLB means those in front of the umpire, according to a league official. So even though Beltran's liner first touched the ground beyond the third-base bag, it was not a play that would have been reviewed. MLB may adjust the rule in future seasons to make that type of play reviewable. But, for now, the league doesn't want to be involved with having to place runners on the correct bases if it can help it. I'm not sure I understand. Did Beltran's drive hit the foul line in front of the umpire? I seem to remember it happening in short left field; I would have thought it would have been beyond where the umpire was standing. And anyway, even if the ball is behind the umpire, you still could have to figure out where to place runners. If a fair ball is changed to foul, of course, it's easy. But if a ball hits the foul line just short of the warning track, and there are runners on base, and the ball is called foul and then overruled, you will have to figure out where to place the runners. It's unavoidable. I guess players could complete the play, like they do in football when a flag is thrown. But that would be quite a cultural change; both teams would have to learn to ignore the foul call by the umpire whenever it's close. I'm like 95% sure Beltran's ball would be classified as OF, and I'm also pretty sure you could still argue to have it reviewed based on OF/IF. How many infield foul/fair balls are there? It's really just those choppers that may or may not cross foul before the bag. And those ARE difficult. did it hit something and ricochet? would the OFer have read that correctly? Would the runner on first go first to third because of it? the foul/fair in the outfielder is a little smoother. But you're still going to have to place runners. Say Duda was halfway to second and picking up steam when the ball is call foul and later overturned. does he get third? but trapped OF catches are going to result in the same mess. Perhaps umpires will be trained to err on the side of hit? But hell, Lagares makes a diving catch that is called a hit but ultimately was caught. it's 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth at Citizen's Bank Ballpark and there is one out. Ryan Howard is on third, tagging up. How can you possibly reasonably reconstruct that play? Do you award Howard home, and the Phillies the game, because you don't think Juan gets up to throw him out in time? Do you hold him because you don't think it's fair to end a game on a reversed call without it playing out, despite it Lagares taking 3 seconds to get up after the dive and it seems pretty conclusive in real time that Howard would've scored? But I guess those are the pitfalls of trying to up the accuracy of calls.

TransMonk wrote: Agreed with Willets. Those outside the Bronx don't need the games to be any longer than they already are. You think this system will actually make the games any longer? If it does, it'll only be marginally, and that time will not be the normal "what's going on? check twitter, what are people saying?" stuff, because they'll be able to put up the replay on the big screen and be involved.

wonder if 'record keeping' is more an entry to just allow MLB/scorekeepers/umpires to have a rule in place to adjust things. They change hits to errors or whatever anyway occasionally, so this is just confirming they can do that?
-
I'm not sure I could've chosen a more sensible solution honestly. The challenge bit could be reworked a little, sure, but it gives a manager a guaranteed appeal look early on, and still allows them to come out and bitch and yell and throw bases to try to convince the umps to look on their own. It's being done in a control room, which means the second the umps huddle or the manager comes on the field they should start looking at it if they haven't already, minimizing any real delay. the neighborhood play bit is sort of annoying. I wonder how that'll work. It says double play..if the runner is ultimately safe at first can/will shrewd managers challenge the touching of second anyway?

no Catching Fire? Rigged I say. Looking back, there were like 7-10 movies I really did intend on seeing. Oh well, I guess I'll go download them.

I was so bad at seeing movies in 2013. If I watch I'm just going to root for American Hustle for everything since that's the one I saw.
