All in super slow-mo. And then, when he got to deGrom, his eyes lit up, his face broke into this free, glowing smile, and as he high-fived with his glove, his bare hand tenderly caressed Jacob's hair. It was just guys doing their stupid homogoofing that guys do, but in super slow mo, it was fantabulous. aww man, I turned it off prematurely to avoid Ojeda as per usual and missed that. edit: through the magic of DVR I just went back and rewound. Saw what you meant except it wasn't in slow-mo..? edit again: found it. haha. good stuff. I video'd it with my phone. uploading. will share tomorrow if anyone else wants to see.

He's been a .250 singles hitter without any walks since his return from the DL and as discussed above his early success owes some to BABiP. With Gomez, you could see he had the speed and body that could one day make him a real stud; I don't know how much Lagares will improve. Let's put it this way: He has roughly the same number of plate appearances as Chris Young this year and Young has has more HRs, walks and steals despite being widely recognized as one of the worst players in the league. .300 singles* (he has two doubles in 30 AB) hitter. 30. 30 AB. Before that he had an acceptable .324 OBP with a .122 ISO. Only 8 non-I walks but that was an improved rate over last year. His BAbip was higher, .367, but not that high, particularly for a guy with footspeed. And that's in 6x the sample as the return from DL stuff. I'd give him another AB or two before selling high.

Which is a bit odd in that he's been not playing since Sunday but originally it was described as a sore knee or something like that. Not sure when the supposed concussion came about. Now if I were a cynical guy I'd be wondering if the Yanx are using the shorter DL time in conjunction with the ASB to get him some rest without having to commit to the entire 15 days. I'd also go out looking for a cynical girl. Anyway, didn't help them tonight as the Indians, down 3-0 for much of the game, stuck nine runs up late for the 9-3 romp. He got hit in the face with a batted ball during BP on Wednesday. I believe it was a batted ball HE hit too.

Besides, since the moment he announced his decision to retire this ASG was set-up to be a virtual three-day party specifically to honor him. You think he's going to skip out on that? It's the Yanqui pitchers who always seem to come up with some well-timed early July injury -- ** Oooooh, I think I just sprained my Tripoli joint** -- which land them on the DL over the break thus enabling them to get a two-week rest but often miss just one start. It's also an action which gives the Yanx an opportunity to remind MLB that they're above all that league cooperation shit and will allow their guys to participate in league-wide events if and when they feel like it. Now maybe this Tanaka thing is actually something and will turn out to be more serious than just the usual mid-season hi-jinx ... or maybe it won't. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/15/sports/baseball/jeter-explains-his-all-star-game-absence.html?_r=0 had a "hurt calf" despite getting his 3000th hit with a home run and a big day AFTER announcing he wasn't going. And it's pretty rare for the player to flat out not go. usually the injured guys show up, hang out, put on the jersey, do the press stuff, etc.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: Time to settle in and watch the Cleveland Native Americans try to walk-off the Yanx 4-4 in bottom nine (how'd they get through 8-1/2 innings so quickly?) None of the scrubs they're playing have any idea what's going on. just get up there and swing.
  8. 3 more outs. wouldn't mind an insurance run.
  9. Lagares has been slow in his return, okay for a breather here and there I guess.
  10. Cruising in this game. Gee might not need his pitch allotment.
  11. Hey, any word on if Jeter is going to this All-Star game or finding an excuse to bow out?

  13. Edgy MD wrote: Holy crap. The Mets just knocked the Braves out of first. By a single percentage point, but still. rain helped too. The trick now is it to hold them down. You'll never drown a guy if you let him break the surface again immediately.
  14. This saurus is quickly headed for extinction.

Bah, you expect Google spiders to find the random magazine in your room? (not that I'm putting that past them..)

  19. Edgy MD wrote: Well, sure they all have downsides, some of them big. But if the alternative is Chris Young --- and I know you don't like EY --- you may consider shopping. Yeah, I just want 2005 Carlos Beltran to be out there is all. Zobrist is my uneducated pick just off of the list of names. I'd probably try for someone along the Chris Young format though, slugging and defense.
  20. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The possibilities really open up if you consider including Muffo in a deal since you trade a LH hitter at 2nd for a RH one (Flores). That's something to consider. Then there's always Byrd. Except there's every chance Flores makes any LF upgrade a wash. Those guys strike me as mostly washed up or old, but I'm sure one or two of them must be having a decent season. I've always liked Zobrist though and he's at least a better backup SS than Campbell.
  21. Mets OF is 14th in fWAR,wRC+, Tied for 17th in wOBA, 17th in OPS, and 15th in ISO. So uh, pretty middle of the road there.
  22. My pet theory lately is the second half is going to be pretty damn good for the Mets, but they may have dug themselves too big a hole to make it exciting. We'll just look back and notice "hey, they did pretty good after all?" I'm predicting someone will look up in early September and realize the Mets are really only like 6-7 back. Anyway, where they struggle, besides left field, seems to have no easy fix. As we've noted, though SS looks bad Q and Flores bring that down. C is a big sinkhole but we know where we're going with that, and perhaps d'Arnaud has settled in now? Duda is 18th best in wRC+ in the NL. He's a good player. Problem is you sometimes look for more at 1B (he's 11/28 in wRC+ of qualifying 1B. 13th in unadjusted OPS). So there is clearly room for improvement but you won't quite get as much improvement as you would upgrading one of the weaker positions if you can pull that off. so yeah. LF. Nieuwenhuis is still striking out like every third AB which might suggest his offense isn't sustainable, but maybe ride it while it's hot? Abreu seems to have leveled out but at least it's a level above water. Time to pull the plug on Chris Young and just let these guys play? Although if you squint, Young has 3 HR over the last 14 days /26 pa.. Cesar Puello returned from injury and homered twice yesterday. Jump him up soon?
  23. These, often baseless, rumors pop up roughly every month so I don't even put much thought into them, but figured I'd mention for the sake of completeness. Troy Tulowitzki is supposedly possibly could be open to maybe being on the trade block.
  24. Good for him. Other acceptable choices: Duda (as DH), The Mets best hitter. Granderson: Also has a better wRC+ and wOBA than Murphy. Different position obviously, but is a star and has been All-Star level since May. Wright: Face of MLB, Captain, consistently great player, etc etc. Perhaps not deserving it strictly on this year's stats, but we know that has nothing to do with it. Jon Niese: Having a very good year. Perhaps not one of the best 10-15 pitchers but he's up there so far. Of course, hurt etc but still could've selected him.

But that's what happens when you move it back to the East side. Yeah, good one. They moved it so far downtown they practically were in Jersey (in the Bay anyway, NOT on the East side. Queens and most of Brooklyn had to look over Manhattan to see it again. These hats are a travesty. I despise these hats and I don't really generally care what hats a team wear as long as it's got the Mets logo. I keep thinking they're the other team. Well, there were signs and warnings in Edgewater on Tuesday specifically saying "no fireworks viewing, fireworks in East River" type stuff. I used to watch 'em from Roosevelt Island, though that was a disaster to get off of afterwards.
