  8. Edgy MD wrote: Yeah. It's not really about Syndergaard. It's about that contract. It's already killed one GM and it hangs like the Sword of Damocles over his successor. People talk a lot about the Hernandez and Carter and Piazza trades (the Hernandez trade was by far the best), but the Person/Olerud trade has to be considered among the best the team has made, and it was possible because the Jays were suffering serious buyer's remorse on JO's contract, and they sent $5,000,000 along with him. And that was 1996. So, if I'm a Met exec, I want to see what Colorado is willing to eat here. An added upside is, if he does go pear shaped, the Mets current shortstop plan is still in place as their backup plan. well, would the Mets be sending Flores and/or Tejada along in the deal? I don't really know what the Rockies have, minors/backup wise.

  10. Well, it was always worth discussing. But the reaction on Twitter makes it look like the Mets are sitting in a room with the Rockies working on paperwork. The letdown (because you know, 5% isn't high) is gonna be painful.

Because the teams don't actually announce the player, it just leaks out via various means. And then, when spring training starts, hes going to report to Peoria and train with the Padres. Hes going to stay in their system until June 14th, in fact, meaning that hell spend the first two months of the minor league season playing for a team that actually traded him before Christmas. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/maybe-its-time-to-change-the-ptbnl-rules/

The reports I saw framed the Nats bit as turning a good prospect that was blocked into two that are just further away. Two that are further away but are potentially MUCH better. Turner in particular is a recent top half of the 1st round pick out of college who plays SS, can hit (at least so far), and has top of the chart speed. yeah. Of course guys generally project with greater upside the farther away they are. Haven't hit the pitfalls yet. I'm not sure how to feel about it. Am I bummed the Nationals boosted their farm system a little, or encouraged that they weakened their immediate depth in 2015?
  13. I wonder if other teams legitimately consider Murphy a possibility at third. He played there a little last year, but really has barely played third in the Majors so not regularly since 2008ish in the minors. (split some time in 2008 at other positions, and played OF in Flushing) He's a very good hitter for a 2Bman, for 3B, not as much. Just wondering if there is reluctance, which isn't a great thing for your trading partner to have.

  15. Edgy MD wrote: I'm still missing the "Oh shit" part. There's no nuance between "He couldn't hit" and "He did hit." Please don't try and suggest the inability to reconcile the irreconcilable is on other people. We're not dumb here. You didn't write, "the statistical measurement 'hits' at a good enough rate to be ready to be a major league 2Bman." You wrote, "Given that he couldn't hit... ." It's really easy to say, "Yeah, I guess I overstated that." I more or less agree with you beyond that. so you're arguing semantics? fine. Oh Shit. I assumed that when I said he couldn't hit it was obvious I meant the statistics. I almost always mean the statistics. hit means 'ball hits grass'. 'contact' means his swing. I never meant to infer Rey Ordonezesque batting ability.

But what people are trying to point out to you is that you contradict your own "facts" and opinions from one post to the next, so much so that it becomes an infuriating waste of time for all concerned. And now you've devolved into wound-licking victimization, which is the big neon indicator that further debate is fruitless. I'd say "enough already", but you'd just reply to this with another link in your illogical ceetardian chain of thought. So i'm done playing. clearly you're not. And in fact, I don't contradict myself. I can't help it if you don't get the nuance.

But they're not formed on actual statistics. And that's my only point, Johnny Sarcastico. I wouldn't throw him in the deep end either. He's 20, and the team has a qualified second baseman. But it's just not true to assert that he couldn't hit in his limited showing. It's perfectly OK to say "Oh, shit, I was off there. I still wouldn't hand him a job, considering his age and experience, but he acquitted himself perfectly fine in his big league opportunity, brief as it was." Because that's pretty much what you're saying, minus the "Oh shit" part. My comment was directed at CF anyway, but you should know by now my default state is Sarcastico. What I'm saying is that I wouldn't give him a job, based on the raw numbers I saw from him last year, and based on the development track he's been on. What I'm also saying that from a purely amateurish scouting standpoint, I liked what I saw from him hit-tool-wise. Liking how he physically struck or 'hit' the ball is different than thinking he turned AB into the statistical measurement 'hits' at a good enough rate to be ready to be a major league 2Bman.
  18. Centerfield wrote: you're just arguing to argue. I like to think I'm advocating for facts. You'd like to think so. What you are actually doing is wasting your time. You're arguing with someone who argues simultaneously that: *He did not hit at all during the time that he was here. *He hit the ball hard. Nice contact. *It still was not good enough. *Well, maybe. I guess if you project those numbers over a full season, he hit good enough. But how can you draw conclusions on such a small sample size? *He is definitely not ready for the majors. *But he may only need 20-30 more games in the minors. I forgot the facts only matter when they're your facts. when they're opinions formed on actual statistics (And Frayed Knot said similar things in his appraisal too, so it's not like I'm an oddball here) they're bogus.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: So if I'm reading this trade correctly... - the Nationals give up a soon to be 26 y/o corner OF with some power projections but also only 23 ML ABs to date, plus a pitcher out of HS they got in the 25th round just two years back who is, at best, four or more years away from the majors - and in return got two 1st round draft picks: Joe Ross - 25th overall in 2011, pitched in AA in 2014; Trea Turner, SS who was last year's #13 overall (3 picks after Conforto) and was a college player who should move up quickly Turner is not officially part of the trade since he was drafted less than one year ago, but his name is all over the reports here. Not sure I get it. The Mets did that 'shh, PTBNL' bit with recently draftees last year. If teams are gonna be all hush hush about it but do it anyway, why bother with the rule? The reports I saw framed the Nats bit as turning a good prospect that was blocked into two that are just further away.
  20. you're just arguing to argue. The default state is 'not good enough for the Major Leagues' because it's hard. I was convinced, based on what I saw, that he wasn't ready. He didn't hit enough. Maybe all he needed was 20-30 more games of reps. That he hit at all is obvious, yes, he had 13 hits. But he hit .220. Yes, 27 HR from a MI would be very nice and maybe even enough to sorta excuse a .303 OBP, but the correlation of a guys first 66 PA to an overall season is pretty low. But that stat line, his overall progression in development (no AAA) and the current state of the team overall, I'm comfortable saying he didn't hit enough in his 66 trips to the plate for me to think he's ready to be a regular player on the 2015 Mets.
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Ceetar wrote: Given that he couldn't hit in his limited showing last year, and hasn't played at AAA at all, yeah, this season is a stretch. Outhit Flores. Outhit Campbell. Outhit Brown. Outhit den Dekker. Heck, going by his rates, he outhit a bunch of starters --- Lagares, Young, Tejada, and Wright (WRIGHT!) --- so I wouldn't conclude at all that he couldn't hit. He hit the ball hard. A .710 from a 20-year-old is sweet. Well, small sample and all. and it was .625 before he had 1 good game at the end and then didn't play again. (Did he get hurt? I'm blanking.) He did hit the ball hard. Nice solid contact when he connected, which is what boosted the SLG. But he didn't hit it enough. It wasn't an overall good performance. Not to say I wasn't very encouraged by what I saw though. Solid contact, and the ability to draw walks. Didn't embarrass himself as a 20 year old. Very encouraging. Definitely not ready as I see it. Wouldn't be surprised if he only needs another 20-30 games though, and certainly if he was a SS I'd almost say just give them to him at the Major League level.
  22. Given that he couldn't hit in his limited showing last year, and hasn't played at AAA at all, yeah, this season is a stretch.

I assume they still do, but I don't know for sure. Any season ticket or plan holders here? Did y'all get any holiday cards from the Mets this month? (Or maybe the Mets aren't broke enough to have ended their card tradition, but too broke to send partial plan holders a holiday card, in which case, you partial plan holders wouldn't necessarily know anymore). I do have a pending order for tickets. Which reminds me, they're a freaking christmas present, where are they?! I don't know if it comes with a card, I declined the 'holiday box'
