Upbeat Wilpon addresses Mets in rare meeting By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com | @AnthonyDiComo | 47 minutes ago + 3 COMMENTS PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mets principal owner Fred Wilpon has been scarce in public setting over the past half-decade. And while he continues to turn down interview requests on a regular basis, he has become a more visible presence at Mets camp, frequently meeting with manager Terry Collins before and after games. That manifested itself in a different way early Monday morning, when Wilpon gathered everyone in big league camp for his first closed-door meeting with players in years. One player described the meeting as exceedingly positive and "very, very genuine," saying Wilpon expressed to the players how badly he wants to win. "Fred's always been upbeat," third baseman David Wright said. "I'd say that the vast majority of conversations that I've ever had with Mr. Wilpon have been very upbeat, so nothing different." Wilpon, who has not spoken on record in more than two years, declined comment on the meeting. The players, however, did not describe Wilpon as angry or even upset, despite six straight losing seasons. To the contrary, they portrayed the 78-year-old owner as cheerful and optimistic; one player went as far as to call Monday's gathering "the best meeting I've ever been a part of." "I'd like to think that whenever anybody has the floor, that it gets everybody's attention," Wright said. "When you have very few meetings, regardless of what the meetings are about, they mean a little bit more. When you start having meetings for the sake of having meetings, sometimes the message doesn't quite come through. But when you have limited meetings about baseball, like we have, when somebody speaks, the message, I think, comes through a little clearer." well, low bar for sure. They could be trolling. Wilpon could've served cake. Wilpon could've tossed 'em all $100 bills. Wilpon could've challenged them to be the most sarcastic they can be with the media and whoever gets a beat writer to pen a immature comparison to the '86 team first gets a beamer.

I'm sure we can find a 'source' for just about every player. It does seem like Murphy isn't far away, just more of a reps thing. 4 days. Just keep den Dekker or Campbell or whoever your extra bench guy is and play Tejada and Flores.
  4. I'll be at Opening Day and Sophie's first game is May 16th. (Fedora day!)

  6. That's interesting. Sorta a team building (is it sorta a team, or sorta team)? thing. I've noticed a lot more "At David Wright's request.." stuff going on lately.

Not that I'm crying in my soup over the fact that they've seemingly dumped this 'tradition' (however short-lived it was) but ... a) it was a small token of honor and a growing recent tradition so why not keep it? tossing on an extra night game in Wrigley in early April is just asking for weather trouble But, of course, television rules and so the opening weeks of Sunday Night Baseball will take place in such warm weather sites as: Chicago, Bronx, St Louis, Bronx, and Boston, with those first five weeks featuring a wide variety of teams such as: the Cardinals twice, the Red Sox twice, and the Yanquis three times (I'm not sure if the folks at ESPN can NAME many other teams) ... with 'Guest Star' token appearances by the Cubs, Reds, and Mets (week 4). The repeated A-Rod/Mays/Steroids talk is going to be thrilling I'm sure. I imagine that's the primary thing they'll talk about. Well that and how Didi struck out where Jeter would've done something gritty .

On the rare instances when I watch a game played by AL rules it feels like it's the "managing for dummies" version. Better than guys like Bartolo Colon making a mockery of things.
  15. You know what would increase offense and RBI opportunities for the leadoff guys? a DH. or at the very least, even pretending a little bit that your pitchers are also supposed to hit.
  16. It's a silly contrivance to keep going RLRLRL and not bat Murphy 6th cause Murphy's his guy and that's too low in the batting order. the order doesn't really matter too much of course, but I dislike Flores and the pitcher* getting more AB than Lagares. But likely this will work itself out at any rate. someone won't hit that well and it'll become obvious you should hit him/them 7th/8th or everyone will be pulling their weight and it doesn't really matter that the back of the lineup is hitting well but can't find anyone to supplant at the top. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Behind a bunch of dudes who can get on base, Murph actually makes more offensive sense, doesn't he? yeah, I kinda like that. He's a good contact type guy, so the Mets will benefit from the chaos of ball in play with runners on. More chance of an error occuring with more moving parts. and d'Arnaud (And sorta Recker) with the power behind him to sweep the bases clean as well.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I'm just saying that, more than most, this is a guy we should avoid getting too attached to. You could say that about anyone. I don't think Harvey is special in that regard. Also I'm fine with getting too attached to a guy that's under Mets control for 4 more years. That's a long time. I don't think it's out of the question they could work out a long term deal before that either, if he continues to prove worth it.

  19. Another notch in the Mets Legend's belt. This year will be epic. 142 games. .303/.380/.501 22 HR, 6 against the Nationals. 11 SB. All-Star. Some MVP votes. 11 IBB.

  23. It's so weird. I'm pretty tuned to Josh and Howie on the radio that I can tune in and out while working better. I have no idea what's going on in this game that I've been listening to on Astros radio for half an hour.

  25. Edgy MD wrote: It's not my place to put up this thread, but it hasn't gone up yet, and it oughta, because the Mets just dropped and 8-ball on the Marlins in the second inning. Mat Latos on the mound and the Mets hit it all over the place. Homer (yawn, again) for Cuddyer, tripboom for Muno. Two-run single for Tejada, who is hitting .324. Wait, are we sticking with the the whole 'win one and put it up forever' streak there here in spring?
