  1. he wrote that three weeks ago. Tebow hurried back to his tv job. Also if he does intend to return next season he can't get a call-up because the only possible way the Mets put him on the 40 is if they cut him immediately after the season.

Actually (I'm almost certain about this) it was Madison Avenue rock star Jerry Della Famina who came up with that one, almost certainly for huge buxxx. Call it money well spent or something your idiot cousin could have come up with, but at least it was unique to that team at that time and not just a rip-off or even variation of what 20 other clubs were doing or saying. six of one.. so not an underling but an outside agency. (though who's to say it wasn't an underling there) I'd love if they did something like that again, but I imagine they don't see much value in it. (And truthfully, there might not be)
  3. I just made it to one, but this was parenthood (And bridge) related more than anything else. Briefly toyed with going Sunday but I got roughly a billion things to do at home that I should really do. Got Ceetarette to that one though (even if not Ceetarette2) so she's been to one every full season.

A bunch of other teams probably will too. These vendors pitch these things at the winter meetings or gm meetings or whatever. The problem isn't that the Wilpons aren't creative, or couldn't be, it's that they're boring as hell business people that just don't care. They've never cared. Part if it is New York is a full marketplace and everyone will come anyway if they win and really just as long as they're interesting a bunch of bandwagon fans that don't really care about whether or not the blue of the Mets wall is historically accurate.. They have a marketing team who probably send an intern or two to go to these conferences and set up the calendar for next year. They idly click through things in the Swirly drinkworks catalog..no, that's not true. They probably just read the highlighted "new!" and "hot item!" section at the front of the Swirly Drinkworks catalog and set up the promotional schedule based on that. I'm sure the "Magic is back" campaign that begot the Apple was just some well-produced marketing pack from some ambitious underling. I don't even care about the advertising. Maybe i'm just numb to it by this point, but it's everywhere and the Mets aren't even particularly worse about it from a NY standpoint. I thought the Pepsi (And I guess the Coke, although it has even less real tie-in) light-up sign was/is neat. The stupid dunkin cup in LF at Shea was a bit tacky, but it was kinda interesting in it's own way. (Did you know I think the Mets still pretend Cuppy was/does only appear at Citi Field?) My dream would be a slush fund (small, this stuff is mostly peanuts). like a decorating budget, each year, administered by Howie, Gary, and a few well-vetted fans. (Darren probably, Greg. a few others. Cerrone I guess?) And let them fool around with some silly ideas each year. Let them pick a few promotions. Hell, let them have the advertising interns to try to arrange sponsorships. Let them propose tweaks to ..well everything. Naming sections of park "The Piazza" moving the apple to the side and making it part of a tree. Shooting off t-shirts EVERY inning and more from the promenade.
  5. The old apple was appropriately kitschy imo, and the new one is rather bland. But I'd always go overboard on these things, which is why I think the Marlins other (non Stanton) home run thing is neat. You're limited a little in placement since the apple is in the batter's eye. I'd have moved it to the side and made it part of a whole orchard complete with real! apple trees. It'd probably be called the Motts Orchard, but whatever. Apple Sauce would literally be fired from cannons into the Promenade after each home run.

  7. That's not an interesting factoid. They could at least give us something that's not on 452 blogs and news sites?
  8. you drive your car for thousands of hours and never need the airbag or the seatbelt either. Pretty large sample size. People get hurt every year. Maybe not seriously, but it happens. Hell, bats fly into the stands sometimes. Are you supposed to keep your eye on the ball or the bat? These are 110mph projectiles headed right for you. If you're sitting about 6-7 rows behind the ballboy at Citi Field you have roughly 1.5 seconds to see the swing, register that the ball is foul, that it's headed towards you, and to do something about it. 1.5 seconds. are your hands up? Are you holding a beer, or a phone, or a hot dog, or a kid's hand? Did you happen to blink because the sun was in your eyes, or the hot dog vendor just walked past your line of sight? 1.5 seconds. Can you get in front of a child seated 1, 2 seats over in that time? Can you do more than just stick a finger that's about to be broken in front of them?
  9. not as nice as that 10.51 K/9 or the 28.4K%! 9th best K% in the league. Though it'd be nice if he hadn't walked so many this season. At least it's been somewhat better in the second half, as has his velocity.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: It won't cost deGrom a start, anyway. Whether starting on Friday or Sunday, he still has two starts remaining this year. While 17 wins isn't exactly unprecedented, it is a pretty impressive number these days. It would be a nice thing for him to reach that total. I guess? It's just pitcher wins.
  11. deGrom has 15 wins? (I assume that's what we're talking about) do the Mets even have that many?
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I noticed them sort of subtly when I went to a game after they were installed. It was one of those "did you get a haircut?" moments but I am used to it. Keep in mind I generally sit where only Dave Kingman could reach me with a foul ball. Teams for their own $ake have to be careful for liability issues -- especially because the very $ame concerns drive them to do everything they can to keep you from paying attention to the games. Plus you almost have to accept the fact that people in the Donald Trump Era are complete idiots who are looking at their phones half the time and someone to blame for their problems the other half. well, sometimes even the professional 1% of 1% in baseball talent infielders don't handle a screaming line drive. What chance do the rest of us have? or children. without gloves.
  13. It's a nobrainer, especially as seats get closer and line drives get faster. none of the minuscule complaints about the netting outweigh the benefits of not hurting people.

  17. with exception of the dumb idea of 'no long term contracts' the Mets do all of those every year.

  21. I mean, the analogy to Wright isn't quite fair, as Pujols was older and signed for longer. and Wright's decline was medical. He's been good while he's been on the field. Pujols of course has at least hit better than average until this year, though not amazingly. But Pujols is dead weight, whereas Wright is dead money. (At least right at this moment) So Wright has A. produced when he's been here. B. Not been here for a bunch that allows the Mets to fill his spot with a player that can hit (Pujols doesn't give the Angels that. If he was hurt like Wright this year the Angels might be in a playoff spot) and C. actually recoops some of the money by being injured. This is the only year Pujols has actually been terrible. I wouldn't be surprised to see him somewhat retool is approach and swing in the offseason and be passable again next year, but he's still an anchor.

That's the part that makes no sense at all. If cooby were able to get Mets games on her MLB.tv package, she might decide to subscribe. MLB would benefit, and I don't see how any party would lose out. SNY/Comcast which if it was deemed worthwhile, would want to force SNY on everyone in her area. I honestly don't know why they don't. I assume whichever branch/city of Comcast/FIOS/whatever that provides the cable (I think I'm FIOS of Paterson?) opted to leave out SNY when it factored out the packages. But they own that swatch of people and don't want to give it up. And they pay a bazillion dollars to MLB/the teams.
  23. do you know/have the trust of anyone _with_ a cable subscription? cause then just use their login for NBC Sports and stream it. I'd love to cut cable out but we do actually use it somewhat regularly between my wife and pre-recorded kids shows. The hassle to organize the various different subscriptions and places to watch each feels too annoying to me right now. Plus i enjoy the bundled landline as a garbage # to give everyone as an identifier for store accounts and what not (not that I need to still have the number for that I guess)
