  1. I look at it like this - in football we rightly go totally bananas if we score, it's a fantastic experience, it's not better then sex but it's got it's own kinda joy going on and that's why you play the thing. Now, one of the reason why I essentially dislike basketball is the innate frequency of scoring, it means that there's no real joy in the moment, there's only joy if you do it in the last minute when the game is tight. Baseball's a lot closer to football - and a 3 run homer is probably pretty equivalent to the worth of a goal and for the person doing it it's like a long range thunderbolt. How people expect someone to 'think' and go, "hmm, that was really good - but I better not get too excited or i'll be showing up the other team" boggles the mind. In fact, it reeks of people playing the game just for the money and experiencing no joy from it all. Fuck that.
  2. i have to say I hate all this "don't show up the other team" bull shit. You hit a home run you're entitled to get a little excited. I don't care if you do a cartwheel after it's gone, as long as you run until it's over the wall - cause we know what happens if you don't do that. As for the handshakes etc, sure their kinda stupid I'd prefer a good manly hug and the odd kiss like we do in real football.
  3. depends how long he hangs around I suppose.
  4. the best is, it's 2 runs, not one because they walked Wright.
  5. of course they want to 600 ops vs lefties!!
  6. if we score in this inning before 2 outs does he not get a win?
  7. whew. got to see that, Werth got a decent bit of it.
  8. what annoys me though ... is the SIX pitch seventh inning which featured (at least according to gameday) a first pitch pop out, a second pitch pop out and two bunt attempts by Delgado.
  9. yeah but you can hardly call it shift robbed when they virtually always field that way and he virtually always hits into it (against lefties like). ops of .600 vs lefties.
  10. we could really use a lefty mashing caddy for Delgado though. Is that what Casey Blake would be?
  11. charlie manuel and jamie moyer should listen to me.
  12. if i was moyer i'd STILL think about pitching around wright to get to delgado.
  13. what I do like is that they've got Moyer up to 50 or so pitches through 3. he rarely gets more then a pitch or 3 past 100 these days. (only one start at 110+ this year)
  14. they seem kinda lifeless though - like that on the tv too?
  15. it's kinda fun watching this from the pitchers perspective on mlb's gameday. and hoping that he hits pat burrell
  16. sure, but if your centre-fielder's hitting as well as your 1st baseman you've got a great asset in the outfield or a liability at 1st! lets be thankful that it's the former rather then the latter at the mo'.
  17. and the fact that Beltran's a pretty damn good centre fielder.
  18. this is where I want us to grind out at bats against relievers. get the f'ers ground down for tomorrow afternoon's game.
  19. Morrissey certainly won't. He's very busy.
  20. you know what i'd love someone to do - go through the drafts of the Minaya period and do that for each one for 2008. that'd be a huge effort but really cool. thanks who ever you are.
  21. I mean Joe Blanton could well reel off a few decent starts - he's been capable of doing it before, but to give up 2 of your 5 top prospects for someone who's only had a significantly better then average era in his rookie season and who's having a pretty rough season. He's never struck that many people out and seeing Bobby Jones high on his comparable lists via both BP and BR looks about right.
  22. AG/DC wrote: It's the coaches who need to step in and tell him how losing your composure can be counterproductive. by the way, i think that's the EXACT point that Keith Hernandez is making.
  23. i really don't buy into the whole "the entire organisation goes round stabbing each other in the back all the time" kinda conspiracy theory. What's clear is, the collapse that happened last September reflected extremely badly on the manager. Everyone started to form views on why it happened, those views may/may not have included it being the managers fault. The team then didn't start as well as it might have and the media hysteria caused the organisation to start to re-evaluate the how long do we give ..... naturally people had different opinions. They could have used NOT talking to all and sundry about it, but people have leaky lips when they get friends in the media.

    Jerry Manuel

I will say this and I said it when he first came out with in in 06, there's nothing worse then someone with a silly moustache having rules about facial hair/hair cuts.
  25. but a kinda funny one in the report in the NYTIMES this morning "The Mets did not always play well Wednesday night, but they did play with passion. The catalyst was Jose Reyes, who returned from his tantrum a night earlier after Manuel removed him in the first inning as a precaution when Reyes felt a twinge in his hamstring. Reyes threw his helmet and shouted at Randolph, but the two talked in the clubhouse and on the bench during the game. They both wrote the incident off to Reyes' competitive juices."http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/19/sports/baseball/19mets.html?_r=1&ref=baseball&oref=slogin two different managers in one paragraph, i suppose is kinda like having two different managers in one road trip and hell, maybe Jose did think it was Randolph.
