  1. Mientkiewicz has been secretly posting as Bret Sabermetric all these years!
  2. I still don't get the whole "ball that won the series" thing as if that ball has any more signifigance than any other ball used in the World Series. For 2004, as an example, I'd think that Johnny Damon's home run ball would be much more meaningful than the ball that participated in just one of 27 outs in that game. I know I'm alone in this. It's tough being an iconoclast.
  3. Did Big Al play for that team?
  4. Scarlett: Ah, wait until you read Wynar's Introduction to Cataloging and Classification : Revised Ninth Edition. By the way, if you have time for elective library studies reading check out Sorting Out the Web : Approaches to Subject Access by Candy Schwartz, one of my favorite profs. Edgy: All right smarty, I said "includes" not "a complete list." All the same, thank you for reminding us that we've also read Fair Ball : A Fan's Case for Baseball by Bob Costas, an extended article more than a book.
  5. I'm proposing reviving our latent book club for the offseason. Answer in this thread a) if you're interested in participating and offer suggestions for books to read and discuss. The best books for discussion would be about the Mets, followed by any books about baseball, and then sports in general. In the past we've read The Natural by Bernard Malamud, The Thrill of the Grass by W.P. Kinsella, and Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby. I'm proposing this now because if we get an early start we could discuss more than one book (maybe one in early December and another in early February) and also to attract the attention of those CPF members who go into hibernation after the World Series ends.
  6. McCarver talks way too much in a whiney know-it-all tone that grates on my nerves. He also makes bad jokes and particularly when they bomb he has the same annoying habit as David Letterman of referring back to his bad jokes as if repetition would make them funnier. He knows a lot of baseball. He does not know a lot about conveying that knowledge in a concise and entertaining manner appropriate to the narration of a live baseball game.
  7. Bigger image of Bobeer can (made in China!?!?!?!).
  8. Scarlett, where did you get that hat? I'm curious if Chiba Lotte Marines "Benny" jerseys are available anywhere.
  9. There's a pic of the incident. The rest is my own supposition.
  10. I'm waiting for the MLB to sanction an all-time "Girly Name" baseball squad. We've got a list for them to start with.
  11. He also once got in a fit of roid rage and threw a shard of broken bat at a baserunner in the first inning of a World Series game. Somehow he did not get ejected for that, although WS history may be different had the umps had the cajones to do so.
  12. He asked out of Game 6 of the '86 World Series too.
  13. I don't know how tv markets are measured but according to this source Chicago is the 3rd largest metro area with 9,333,511 people and Houston the 8th with 5,075,733. Compared to last year Boston is the 11th largest metro area and St. Louis the 18th, so in the home teams areas alone there is already a bigger potential audience. Obviously both the Red Sox and Cardinals have large followings nationwide that this year's teams probably don't have.
  14. I doubt Luis Lopez will ever be ranked #1 or #2 so it's safe to say that you'll never be Luis Lopez again. SuperLuisLopezUltra on the other hand...
  15. Rockin' Doc wrote: Great series thus far. Too bad nobody cares since neither the Yankees or Red Sox are playing. Sounded like folks on the Southside cared. Didn't they say that no one cared (outside of New York) in 2000 too? It seems that they always find some way for no one to care.
  16. Game #2 of the Nippon Series highlights include: - the slugging prowess of Matt Franco - Benny Agbayani, like Ichiro, wears his first name on his uniform - the pitcher for the Marines (#31) makes Chad Bradford's delivery look overhand - a bow from Bobby V.
  17. I'm rooting for a seven-game series, home team wins every game (yeah I'm in the Whites Sox boat).
  18. Awesome game, awesome series so far. I love baseball.
  19. Highlights of Game #1 of the Nippon Series (opens with Real Player).
  20. Dan Shaugnessy who built his entire career by promoting 'the curse of the Bambino' writes on why curses don't matter.
  21. Does Keenesaw Mountain Landis have any living descendants who can throw out 8 opening pitches?
  22. the two World Series rostersShouldn't there be four World Series rosters?
