  2. Sorry I wasn't paying attention before. Jack Baldschun, 23.
  3. Jack Baldschun.
  4. Dykstra was already in the game--he pinch hit for Aguilera in the seventh. I spent most of that postseason not quite being able to watch. For a team that had cruised in the regular season, they sure made it hard for themselves.

  6. It's sort of sweet, actually, having an Irving Berlin tribute at every game. There are just a lot of better songs they could have picked. "Cheek to Cheek." "Puttin' on the Ritz." "Alexander's Ragtime Band." "Blue Skies." Those are songs worth taking your hat off for.
  7. Putz is like one of those assholes at the gym who thinks he can lift more if he makes monster noises. Just throw the damn ball, idiot.
  8. I'd love to see it. Olerud was only getting started, by the way. He hit .378 the rest of the season. That guy could hit.
  9. He actually says there isn't a clear-cut frontrunner for rookie of the year.
  10. All-time: Seaver. But John Olerud has to get a mention, since he was my favorite current player even before he was a Met. Now: Wright. I love Reyes, too, and Ike, and I really like these kids who are exceeding themselves right now. But I felt the same way about Timo Perez, so there's no point in getting permanently attached yet.
  11. I'm skeptical about that Kiner kid. He's got some power, but I think he's going to be exposed when all the pitchers back from the war are at full strength again. I do like that Al Gionfriddo, though. I'm not saying he's Paul Waner Jr., but he looks like the goods to me.
  12. Joe Black
  13. Les Walrond has got to be an anagram for his real name. Did he rob the mail coach or something and go into hiding in Japan? These are all more plausible names than "Les Walrond." Drew Llanos Radon Wells Rand Sowell Sol Wandler Dell Warson
  14. Don't even get me started on Mackey Sasser's erysipelas.

They lost.
  18. I haven't felt this humiliated by a questionnaire since Match.com told me I was a misfit and they couldn't do anything for me.
  19. Rusty Hochberg. I had to bat against him one time in Little League, and he scared the crap out of me. No disrespect to Mr. Feller, who I'm sure was plenty fast back in his day.

  21. What was Carlton's run support in 1972? About league average, actually. Carlton wasn't an outlier; he just pitched great. And Murry Dickson 1951 is an even worse example (though it's hilarious that Chass reached that far back in his memory to come up with him). The Pirates hitting wasn't inept at all (they had Kiner, after all), and when Dickson pitched, it was half a run above league average (lucky for him, because he didn't actually pitch all that well that year). I know Murray Chass is a busy man these days, but if he wants help looking things up, he should give me a call. It took me about 45 seconds to find that stuff.
  22. It seems like the right choice, but unanimous? You'd think Adam Wainwright would have gotten one or two sympathy votes for deserving it last year.
  23. All-Campaneris: P: Bert C: Bert 1B: Bert 2B: Bert 3B: Bert SS: Bert LF: Bert CF: Bert RF: Bert Utility: Bert vs. All-Tovar: P: Cesar C: Cesar 1B: Cesar 2B: Cesar 3B: Cesar SS: Cesar LF: Cesar CF: Cesar RF: Cesar Utility: Cesar Campy x 9 won't hit a lot of home runs, but he'll steal some bases for you. And if he's his own manager, you know he's got the green light.
  24. I'm with Voltaire: If Mr. Met did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.
  25. Kingman in 1979 had a very similar season to Andre Dawson's in 1987 when he got traded to the Cubs. Significantly better, actually. But Dawson won the MVP, and Kingman finished eleventh in the voting. Basically because Dawson was a good guy and Kingman was Kingman. I'm not going to cry for Dave Kingman, but that does seem kind of a raw deal. Not that either one of them deserved the award, of course.
