  1. Bowie Kuhn would have vetoed this one.
  2. Wins, yeah. Plus I think they figured Jenkins was due, that being the fifth time in a row he'd won 20. He needed some kind of award for that. They may even have considered that since Wrigley was a hitter's park and Shea was a pitcher's park, the ERA difference wasn't as important as it looked. (Seaver's ERA on the road was 1.63, but never mind.)

So when demand decreases, and supply stays the same, prices go... up? That's the business model where I work. We're not selling as many books as we used to, but if we charge more for the ones we do sell, we can still come out ahead. And that's why academic publishing is leading our nation's economic recovery.
  4. If you're looking for reasons to hate the Nats, that one seems like it would be pretty far down the list. I'd start with Bryce Harper and leave it at that.
  5. Some nice rematches there: Reds-Orioles 1970, Reds-Tigers 1940, Browns-Cardinals 1944, Tigers-Cardinals 1934, Cardinals-A's 1931. I kind of like the idea of Connie Mack's Athletics trying to turn the tables on Hank Gowdy and the 1914 Miracle Braves. Except that of course I don't like the idea of the Braves in the Series again at all. Baltimore is the one team I'd really like to see there. And the NL opponent that offends me least is Cincinnati.
  6. The kid with the backpack? That was me! I had a blast tossing ideas around with Lucia and RA. Spitballing, ha ha. RA's a great guy. We came up with a whole bunch of characters to be Knuckleball Ned's friends. Like Gyro, his buddy from Japan. His country cousin Eephus who everyone thinks is dumb but isn't. Screwball, who likes to party. And when Ned's in trouble his Uncle Charlie is always there to help him out. And there are some others I'm forgetting. You'll just have to wait for the book to come out!

It's hard to say what "not all that long ago" means, since no one's done it since 1967. But there have been Triple Crown winners since they started giving the MVP, and only six have won the award. In 1934 Gehrig finished fifth in the voting. Suck on it, Biscuit Pants.
  8. Christ. I'd rather have Jose Canseco for a neighbor. With that kind of douchebag you can just write off--he's like that, and there's nothing anyone, including him, can do about it. Except call the cops. But you know Olerud's thought a lot about it. To be so calmly, sensibly, considerately, rationally, politely wrong--it's practically psychopathic. Another player I love but really don't want to know. Oh well.
  9. Kid's doing a Dickey face. Love it.
  10. Spanish just kind of works that way. Nouns sort of almost have to have articles. English speakers say, "Family is important," but Spanish speakers say, "La familia es importante." (Mets fans say, "Don't trade Familia.") Salute to the Brewers for doing it right. Yes, but Mexican League teams don't include the article, either on their jerseys or, I think, in their official names. Pericos de Puebla, for example:
  11. If Moyer is really serious about prolonging his career, maybe it's time to learn the knuckleball. That could keep him going until retirement age. The guy is a couple of weeks older than me. Me and Stan Jefferson, actually. That's old.
  12. Great writeup. These are the guys the Mets were supposed to be as bad as this year, and I really want to prove it isn't true. I love those underground cities. They're like what the mole men would build if they got rich off selenium or something and went into real estate. When I'm down in one of them, it feels like I could be anywhere--like if I turned a corner and went up a ramp I might be in Houston instead of Toronto.
  13. Dylan Owen gets around, doesn't he? Maybe someday soon he'll be dominating hitters simultaneously for the Bisons and the Mets.
  14. Should be two homers by Terrell at Wrigley in 1983. Same game.
  15. What's the Spanish for "Freeman missed the tag! Come on, ump"?
  16. and some robots PLAY baseball... http://www.tv.com/shows/the-twilight-zone/the-mighty-casey-12619/ http://movies.netflix.com/WiPlayer?KID=k262993&TACID=&CREATIVE=n&SESSIONID=id_729849889&movieid=70174041&USERID=729849066 I was expecting a link to pictures of A-Rod. A robot centaur?
  17. I'm not sure what this means.
  18. I dreamed last night that the Mets had given the first base job to a giant piece of lasagna. I was considering whether to draft it in my fantasy league. Baseball Prospectus wasn't too high on it, but with the fences coming in at Citi, it should be good for fifteen or twenty homers.
  19. This is pretty random, but what the hell. Photoshop for me too.
  20. RealityChuck wrote: Supposedly, Hornsby scouted the NL before the 1962 season and only had one positive comment: "Looks like he could be a major league ball player." The player in question was Willie Mays. I thought it was the Yankees, not the NL. And the player was Mickey Mantle. Same idea. What his stone was supposed to read: "Sure I piss in the shower. What are you going to do about it?" In the Ty Cobb movie with Tommy Lee Jones, Cobb is at an old-timer's convention, and nobody will hang out with him because they hate him so much. They're all at a party in Rogers Hornsby's room, and Cobb isn't invited. I don't think so. Hornsby was hated much more than Cobb. I think he really was the greatest right-handed hitter who ever lived, and I'm actually from Travis County, but I don't have any plans to visit his grave the next time I'm down there.
