  1. I'm baffled by the difference in the World Series odds between the Mets and Dodgers. A series between them seems like a tossup--edge to the Dodgers, I guess, in strength of schedule, but not much else to distinguish them. Is it because of the Mets' terrible record (3-17) against the Central Division teams they'd face in the second round? Has to be; but the Dodgers are only 6-11 against those teams.
  2. Uribe? Or does that thought just add to your worries? That would be kind of like when Paul Molitor hadn't played third base for about for years, and suddenly had to play it in the World Series.
  3. I'd settle for a better record than the Yankees.
  4. That's a weird list in a lot of ways. Just the basic idea doesn't make much sense--hated by your team's fans and hated by everybody else are completely different things. The first is probably a more interesting topic, but whatever. Does anyone really hate Dontrelle Willis? He seemed like a lot of fun, and I was really sorry to see him lose it so badly. Mike Schmidt was pretty hard to like, but there didn't seem any reason to hate him, except for his being really good. David Wells--I lived in Toronto when he pitched there, and I had no idea I was supposed to hate him. And Dock Ellis--throwing a no hitter on acid is weird and amazing and kind of frightening, but hateful? Really? And yeah, I love Jesse Orosco. There's too much goodwill from 1983 and 1986 for me even to consider hating him. If I had to choose a Met to hate, I'd probably go with Kingman. He was gifted--that year in Chicago showed what he was capable of--and he chose not to give a shit.
  5. You know, I really can't enjoy these games. They're like waiting out a tornado or something, knowing something terrible could happen any moment. But if you can get any distance at all, this is a hell of a series. Not great baseball, I guess, but classic stuff. Now I've got to go back in my storm shelter.
  6. I just thought Andujar was a dick back then. And that meltdown in the 1985 Series was pretty hard to excuse. It was a big part of what turned me against the Cards for good--which is funny, because it's what also turned the Cards against him; they shipped him the hell out of St. Louis after that. But I guess you can call him colorful or something now. And he was good. Not so much in his 20 win seasons--those were a little flukey--but he was huge in 1982. No way they would have won the pennant without him. (And I still don't know how they did win it.)
  7. I don't want to crush him. That's no way to treat someone. We should just let him know that even if he's not very good at baseball, he's still a good person, and there are probably lots of other things he could do really well. Like, I don't know, making appliqu seahorses, or playing tuba in an oom-pah band. We'll find something.
  8. Oh man. If I'm a Nats fan, which God forbid, this is the most demoralizing loss of the year. Take the lead in the seventh, and give it right back and then some with five two-out runs, get two on, nobody out with Harper up, and then a wild pitch comes right back to Molina and one of the runners is thrown out. And that was pretty much it. Metsie, Metsie, Metsie!
  9. 1984 was the most fun. 1985 was the most exciting. The last series with St. Louis in 1985 was incredible.
  10. RBIs by relievers are probably a little more common, but what Torres's heroics make me think of is that game in 1999 when Pat Mahomes drove in the winning run in the 13th and was the winning pitcher. Mahomes was a hell of an athlete too.

What team goes 10 GAMES and over 400 plate appearances without a home run in June and then hits 43 in 24 games in August? I mean, that just doesn't happen. Until now, anyway. It's like Damn Yankees and we're the Washington Senators. Come to think of it, Terry looks a bit like Ray Walston.
  12. I'm pretty sure that ball did hit Wright's foot. I'm not crying about it.
  13. Now it's just like all the other horses.

I'm not sure, but I think you've just experienced a documented Mario Ramirez sighting. I was guessing Nino Espinosa. Which would make it 1978.
  17. Did the front office have some idea this was coming, and make the Clippard trade in anticipation?
  18. The first was Ty Cobb. I remember that from when Rusty became the second.
  19. Centerfield wrote: They are tied with Philly for second to last in the majors with a .660 OPS. I wonder if any team in baseball has ever made the playoffs with a bottom 3 offense. Not bottom third, bottom 3. Well, the Mets did in 1973. Second to last in all of baseball.
  20. I think the Yankee at the bottom of the steps is Hideki Irabu, squatting like a fat pussy toad.
  21. Trout. I don't even take Harper for my fantasy teams. I haven't disliked a player so viscerally since Pete Rose.
  22. Moonlight Graham. Or Herb Washington.

  24. Bill Hands pitched against Don Gullett one time, in 1971.
