  3. with a good glove and decent speed, he'll be our 4th OFer, spelling each of our LHed starting OFers from time to time. I don't think he'll hit enough to play regularly, but i think that's true of our starting OF too, so he may get more ABs by default... and by "default" i mean da fault of our GM for not getting even one legit starting OFer. If he ends up in a platoon with Nieuwenheis, they could combine for the most Ks ever from the CF position.
  4. i think they'll want to carry a 2nd LHP if they can, and he's the only one on the roster right now. If he pitches well enough to at least match Feliciano, Rice and Laffey, he'll have the roster edge. Of course, if 3 or more of Atchison, Hawkins, Famiglia, Burke and E.Ramirez all pitch much better than Carson, they may just go with 1 LHP, Josh Edgin. Which is a distinctly possible scenario.
  5. $1 hot dogs? it might almost be worth the airfare...
  6. the band was Jones, McDonald and Gramm. They did the first 3 albums together, which were all huge and contain almost all the good songs in their inventory. The 4th album ("4") happened after Jones tossed McDonald out so he (with Gramm) could write all the songs. It has some big songs, too, but was softer and mushier than its predecessors. Though they had a few more hits in later years ("I want to know what love is"), not a single note they wrote or played after "4" in 1981 is worth listening to again. That's about 30 years of them being basically a FOREIGNER cover band. Even the most generous definition of the band as basically being Jones & Gramm would date the group's demise as 2002. I don't know what the carcass is that calls itself FOREIGNER now other than Jones' glorified solo project with hired hands brought on to give hollow renditions of former glories. as for touring as a retirement plan for dinosaur bands, these groups used to be able to live off their music libraries, but with digital piracy basically undermining the industry and destroying the market, so bands find they have to tour to live. Others live to tour, and would be on the road regardless.
  7. That would be ok if he he HIT like Krukie, too.
  8. I don't know why he'd hit better here than he did anywhere else. He'll hit .235/10hrs, and become the backup after d'Arnaud comes up. Which is still better than what we had.
  9. Brown's name won't even come up during the 2013 season.
  10. i think he'll win the RF job outright, hitting .280 with minimal power.
  11. i can see him hitting .275 with decent OB% and some SBs, with doubles power, plus a solid glove. That's not a bad profile for a 4th-5th OFer. It's not his fault he's penciled in to start and will likely be overexposed with too much playing time. The kid from Whitestone would be a nice bench player, but will fail as a starter and then they'll bury or cut him.
  12. Zach could take Turner's job. I think he has the chops to be a better hitter, and he can't be a much worse fielder.
  13. He's pretty much at the point in his career where Burnitz turned a corner, for whatever that's worth. not exactly. Burnitz was a late bloomer, who didn't put up a full quality season till age 28, after 5 years in the majors, with 3 different teams. And maybe Duda will need that kind of time and opportunity, or maybe he won't, or maybe he'll never develop regardless of time and opportunity. But Burnitz was given the extended chance because he was a 1st round pick, with a lot of natural athletic talent, who was a pretty good OFer even when he wasn't hitting. Plus he played with intensity and passion, which managers (and fans) tend to like. Duda has none of this, and with a personality bordering on borderline, i don't think he will be given that kind of extended opportunity to turn the corner in his career. I'd like to be wrong.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: I think the Duda Bides, although Burnitz is a scary parallel. .260/33/88 in 140 games. Burnitz can also be a pretty exciting parallel. Burnitz had a damn good career --- just not for the Mets. yeah, you beat me to it, Edge. The guy played 14 years, with a .250/30hr/95rbi line, and a career .825 OPS, not to mention a great RF arm. Duda should be so lucky as to have that kind of career. And i don't see it happening. projection: .240 /16 HRs in around 300 ABs, benched by August
  15. Really? Was he there with Honey Ryder?
  16. i got 9 out of top 10 categories, missing only supporting actor. I thought it would be Bobby D, not another one for the deserving Waltz. ARGO Ang Lee DDLewis J.Lawrence A.Hathaway x- R.Deniro (Waltz) screenplays - Django / Argo Score - Pi Song - Skyfall Also got Foreign (Amour), Animation (Brave) and Doc (Sugarman). I would've won in a weighted pool, but in a straight up pool i missed most of the craft / shorts categories, so lost out.
  17. Hey Batty, not for nuttin' (as they used to say in my old neighborhood), but is there anything the `Pons could do that you wouldn't hang them for? You give them crap for NOT spending (warranted), and now you give them crap for spending. I despise the current ownership group as much as anybody, and i think Megdal's Javert-like rants are more right than wrong about the current economic situation of the team, but the Wright deal was necessary, and not just from a PR perspective. He's not at the end of his career; he's right in the middle of his prime. Your notion that he has "2 good seasons left" is something you extricated from your rectal orifice. While obviously anybody can go south at any point, he's as likely to be sufficiently productive for at least the next 5 years as he is 2. And the dollars are not at such a level as many other star contracts, particularly with its structured deferments [he definitely gave them a hometown discount in this regard], such that they'll cripple the team when he finally falls off. From a historical perspective, he is their best position player ... EVER. He will soon hold every single offensive team record. It is important that such a player be a lifetime Met and not shown the door at his peak. And the "Dickey fiasco"? Puleez. They sold high on a guy they picked up off the scrap heap, trading from their only position of strength and depth to get key pieces that will accelerate the rebuild. Your agenda steers your rationale.
  18. F-Rod, Act II. Do they rest him early and often, on the legit pretext that his damaged arm needs as much rest as possible to make it through the season? Or do they shut him down late in the year, after we're out of it, on the pretext of wanting to give Wheeler his shot? Or do they trade him at the deadline, making his contract somebody else's problem? Or do they do what they usually do... nothing.
  19. well, you know, alot of those Dodger fans... they're latins. They clearly had it in for him.
  20. as we start ST: CL: Bobby Parnell CL2/setup: Brandon Lyon setup: J.Familia situational RH: Elvin Ramirez/ G.Burke / Hawkins* / Atchison* situational LH: Josh Edgin LH2: Robert Carson / Feliciano* / Byrdak*/ Rice* spot starter/long reliever: Colin McHugh / J.Hefner / A.Laffey* DL: Frank Francisco * non-roster invitee
  21. you don't think he actually WROTE the book, do you? I'm dubious that he's even read it.
  22. i think the book hurts his HOF chances. Maybe he figured he would be in already so it wouldn't matter, but next year the writers are going to look at his admissions as even further "evidence" (ha!) of his juicing. I thought he'd get in next year before the book, but now i think it might be a while (if ever).
  23. Although, in general, athlete autobiographies set a pretty low bar. i know that place... down on st. marks, right?
  24. well, its not like they were going to retire 15 for either Grote or Beltran, so if its going to stay in circulation, i'm happy to see Grote's number go to their "next great catcher".
  25. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I guess they couldn't unseat Bowa and Bud wasn't much of a hitter anymore. Bud wasn't much of a hitter "anymore"? Pray tell, at what point in his career WAS he much of a hitter? .236 BA / .327 OBP / .288 SLG! / .616 OPS / 76 OPS+ don't get me wrong; i loved Bud Harrelson. but i never confused him with an actual hitter at any point in his career. And yet he was still better than Rey Ordonez!
