  1. I loved that game when i was a kid. My brothers had it and taught it to me. In HS, i started playing a baseball board game with my friends that had team charts instead of individual player cards. It was very 70s. I think it was put out by Sports Illustrated, but its all very vague. It wasn't as good as Strat, but nobody played Strat anymore so that's what i had. At some point i read this book http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Baseball-Association-Henry-Waugh/dp/0452260302, and it scared me away from these activities. In recent years, online fantasy baseball has really been great for me in reclaiming those old joys.
  2. hurts his arm on a cold night in Buffalo, and is never the same again. next.
  3. Murray's spontaneous riffs, and his ongoing battle and the Gopher, are what make the movie worth watching. and, of course, the gratuituous boobage. The rest is worthless. and Ben, i LOVE the gopher dance... so i got THAT goin' for me, which is nice.
  4. great great great movie
  5. 25-man roster should not exceed 3 tons. If they tip the scale, they start getting limbs amputated.
  6. While i didn't go to film school, i studied film in HS and college, and on my own. I used to work in the movie biz, and Oscar parties and pools were commonplace. even after changing careers, i kept hosting a party, and ran a pool at my office. i often won. i almost always saw all the nominated films. for a while, i made some money reviewing movies. hard core movie buffs i know would often call me to answer movie trivia questions, or get my insight on some film or actor or director, or whatever. One friend would call me from the video store, perhaps in a Sturges mood, asking whether he should rent CHRISTMAS IN JULY or MAD WEDNESDAY (answer: MAD WEDNESDAY). He lamented the lack of a "portable Ralph" for such occasions (my name is Ralph, for those of you who didn't know that). so when i tell you i've only seen 2 of the movies out of this year's (TEN!) nominees, and one of them was TOY STORY 3 at my son's behest, and that i don't really care about the show, the nominees, the outcome, etc, that should indicate a watershed moment in my life. I am sad, but just for a moment. And then i move on.
  7. his presence on the roster out of ST will cost N.Evans a job in the Mets org (Nick will have to get DFA'd to be sent down, and we'll lose him on waivers). Then, Hairston will suck continuously before a season-ending injury (of which he's had many) right after we trade Beltran. We'll end up playing a career IFer in RF (moving Pagan back to CF) and wishing we had a Nick Evans to plug in. Lack of production from a corner OF slot will cost us 5-6 games in the 2nd half, and we'll finish under .500. for lack of a nail, a kingdom was lost... well, not a kingdom exactly. but a fair claim on mediocrity.
  8. Finally caught up with this one and I liked it alot. And yes, it's part of that post-modern coming of age JUNO subgenre. And for some, that's not a bad thing. i try to define the subgenre's elements here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8008 also: Probably wasn't more popular due to lack of the Apatow-ness now expected from teen romance flicks. that's ironic, since one of my favorite characters is the bespectacled russian lit nerd pal, who i first saw in Apatow's classic cult sitcom FREAKS & GEEKS, which i'm now watching on IFC.
  9. is there a source for this updated info?
  10. who among the bubble guys currently on the 40-man roster are out of options and can't be sent down without going thru waivers? SP: Misch, Gee, Mejia, Ar.Rodriguez, Stinson Bullpen: Parnell, Acosta, Buchholz, M.Alvarez Bench: Nickeas, Murphy, LHernandez, N.Evans, F.Martinez, Duda, Lutz, Tejada, Turner, Valdespin i'm assuming we can't send down the new guys (Capuano, Young, Carrasco, Buchholtz, Paulino, Hu and Hairston)
  11. Projection: 2011 opening roster (revised) rotation: Pelfrey Dickey Niese (LH) Capuano (LH)* Chris Young * *[DL - Santana (Lh)] *[Traded or DFAd: O.Perez (Lh)] *[sent down: Misch, Gee, Mejia, Ar.Rodriguez, Stinson] bullpen: F-Rod Parnell Carrasco Acosta Beato Buchholz LHRP: O'Connor* or Tankersley* or Byrdak* *= non-roster **[sent down: M.Alvarez] **[invitees cut or sign minor league deals: Bonser, Igarashi, Stoner, Boyer and the LHRPs above that don't make it] Lineup: ss - Reyes (sw) cf - Pagan (sw) 3b - Wright (rh) RF - Beltran (Sw) LF - Bay (rh) 1b - Davis (lh) 2b - Murphy (lh) / Emaus (rh)* C - Thole (lh) / Paulino [Nickeas]** (rh) *[Traded or DFA: Castillo] **[suspended: Paulino for first 8 games] Bench: C - Paulino [Nickeas]** / Thole (Lh) 1b/2B/3B - Emaus / Murphy (Lh) MI - Hu*** OF/Rh - Scott Hairston OF/Lh - Willie Harris* * = non-roster **[suspended: Paulino for first 8 games] ***[Traded or DFA: Hernandez ***[sent down: N.Evans, F.Martinez, Duda, Lutz, Tejada, Turner, Valdespin] ***[invitees cut or sign minor league deals: Chavez, Ryan, Adams, Pridie]
  12. you drop Hernandez and Nickeas. They're both likely to pass thru waivers. Then, when you have to settle the 25-man roster after ST, you DL a pitcher on the 40-man (cuz no team gets out of ST unscathed), then add whatever backup catcher you need to to the roster, for the week before Paulino comes back. When Paulino returns, you drop the backup from the 40-man and add back whoever you DL-ed, or whomever else you need. does that work?
  13. did reyes suffer another injury i'm unaware of? Did he finish the season relatively healthy (for him), or stumble to the finish? I really don't remember, because i've blacked last season completely out of my memory. assuming relative health / avg-decent finish, what exactly is gained by "waiting to see" in ST? what is Sandy going to see, exactly? Whether Jose will make it thru next August? Unknowable. Whether he's got a limp? that would've been clear at the end of last season, no? i don't get it.
  14. i can make it by 1pm -- save me a wing and hush puppie!
  15. projection: 2011 roster (revised) rotation: Pelfrey Dickey Niese (LH) Capuano (LH) Chris Young or Gee or Misch (LH) * *[santana - DL] *[Perez released/traded] bullpen: F-Rod Parnell Carrasco Acosta Beato Buchholz Misch (lh) or O'Connor (lh) or Tankersley (lh) Lineup: ss - Reyes (sw) cf - Pagan (sw) 3b - Wright (rh) RF - Beltran (Sw) LF - Bay (rh) 1b - Davis (lh) 2b - Murphy (lh) / Emaus (rh)* C - Thole (lh) / Nickeas [Paulino] (rh)** * [Castillo released/traded] ** [Paulino suspended first 8 games] Bench: C - Nickeas [Paulino] / Thole (LH) 2B (3B,1B) - Emaus / Murphy (LH) OF/Rh - N.Evans (1b/3b) or Scott Hairston OF/Lh - Willie Harris (LH) or Pridie (LH) or Duda (LH) MI - Hu or Willie Harris (LH) * * [Hernandez released]
  16. Didn't Jim Morrison get arrested for that once?
  17. F-Rod ® - CL Parnell ® - setup/CL Carrasco ® - middle/setup Acosta ® - middle/setup Buchholtz ® - middle/setup/spot-starter Beato ® - rule V ROOGY O'Connor(L)* / Tankersley*(L) - LOOGY * not on 40-man roster the "oys" still have it...
  18. so i guess he gets Pridie's slot as the 5th OFer /25th man?
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: We could probably do better for a 5th outfielder than Pridie, I'm thinking. Fred Lewis went and signed with the Reds. duda, obviously, is a better bat, but it appears that Sandy wants him to get a full AAA season, and work on defense. i've seen some rumors about Podsednik, which could be fun. But it needs to be a LH bat with a decent glove.
  20. Turner has options, so can be sent down at no cost. Otherwise, he'd have to beat out either Emaus (which would entail giving him back under Rule V) or Hu (which would leave us without a good glove backing up SS/2b). I don't see it happening. As for Ryan, i don't think he's on the 40-man roster so i don't see him being added either, just to have him over Nickeas for first 2 weeks that Paulino is serving his suspension.

  22. 28-year old LH power pitcher who walks too many damn hitters. But heck, he's a lefty and he strikes MFers out, so worth a shot.
  23. [crossout:136i82hw]Adam LaRoche[/crossout:136i82hw] Ike Davis = .265-.275ba / 20-25hr / 85-90rbi
  24. i'd make some joke about him getting snipered, but that could rile the Palinites into killing somebody els. so i won't. but i'm really hoping never to see him in a Mets uni again.
  25. Gwreck wrote: To clarify: 1. Actually, I've been on record here numerous times that conclusive evidence (ie. failed test for PEDs once MLB implemented their testing program) is, in my opinion, sufficient reason to keep an otherwise-deserving player out of the Hall of Fame for those so inclined and have specifically cited Palmeiro as the obvious example. 2. You are correct that Sosa was reported by the NY Times to be on a list of positive steroids tests in 2003, at time when testing was done on an anonymous survey basis. You may recall that a Federal Court eventually ruled that the federal prosecutors who seized that information acted illegally. Sosa, of course, failed no such tests once baseball was doing so publicly and with penalties for those caught. 3. My personal belief is that the line-drawing re: PED users and hall of fame eligibility is misguided, but that's people's prerogative. My strongest objection is to what I believe to be specious logic when drawing those lines. I have no interest in a fight; just well-reasoned discussion (and debate). Whether the information about Sosa was siezed illegally, or whether baseball was publically testing or penalizing anyone at the time, is utterly immaterial to the fact of Sosa's test results. This isn't a legal proceeding; its a vote to see if someone meets the criteria of the HOF which include sportsmanship, and other such trivialities. Voters are, and i am, entitled to take that information into account. And, when further put in the context of his "no hablo ingles" testimony in front of congress and the circumstantial data about his physical changes and late-career performance level increase, makes exclusion based on PEDs a rational conclusion. This is easily distinguishable from Bagwell, who has no failed test (as far as we know so far) or made any admission, or was even acused by others in Mitchell report. you wanted me to "take a stand", so i took it. I didn't like the tone you and MGIM decided to take with me. but i'm moving on... suggest you 2 do 2.
