  1. Turned a corner or merely hot? are you suggesting he's turned the corner and he's now a .500 hitter? i think i'll vote for "merely hot". Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  2. 6yr/$100M - take it or leave it.

  4. don't fucking trade reyes. don't fucking trade wright. build a fucking winner and rake in the fucking dough. Rinse. Repeat. If they need to cut salary, trade Frankie before he vests. Better yet, sell the fucking team to someone who can afford to pay their salaries. This... and that.
  5. Shelton is adapting it as a Broadway-bound musical

  7. stepped out to a sports bar to watch the last few innings. Didn't take the sting out of yesterday's debacle, but it was better than a sharp stick in the eye. But taking out the best bat in the lineup (beltran) with only a 2-run lead, in order to get a slight defensive upgrade in RF, is the kind of thinking that would make Earl Weaver spin in his grave (is Weaver dead?) I mean, was it inconceivable that FRod coughs up the lead in the 9th? Then what? We have to win in Xtra Innings without Beltran? Unless Beltran's knee was hurting, that's the kind of overmanaging at the margins that makes me dislike the ****bunter.

Maybe it was the influence of Jerry Manuel and his liking that style of player. i'm not inferring it; you're inferring it. I didn't even imply it. I just think DW is trying to do what he thinks he has to, after the debacle of `09, to stay even moderately productive in the unfriendly confines of ShitiField.

See "Wright, David". I'm confused. Didn't Wright hit 29 home runs in a down year, above his career average? All while maintaining he's not really a power hitter he's a gap hitter? yes, you are confused. Wright went from a borderline MVP at Shea to a guy who has increased his K rate by 35% and dropped his OPS by 100 points, just to maintain his HR rate at Shiti. The only reason he hasn't fallen totally off a cliff production-wise, is he's a great player in the prime of his career. That he was able to be as productive as he was last year, when he had totally fucked up his approach the year before because of his homefield disadvantage, just goes to show how great he is... or was... or could be again. somewhere else.
  10. you're on fire today...maybe Collins can reach in and rip Dunst's larynx out i was at the game last night, and it is still fueling my fury.

  12. Terry the ****bunter is just another in the recent string of smallballers filling out our lineup card and i'm so sick of it, i can't even READ about a game (much less watch one) without getting pissed off at something he does or doesn't do. I'm not saying he's worse than Willie or Jerry in this regard, but the cumulative effect has worn me down to the nub. And when he brings in FRod to finish games, even in NON-SAVE SITUATIONS, while scrupulously avoiding him in the high-leverage late-game situations when the game is really on the line, i want to rip my teeth out of my head. In terms of his disposition, i've got no problem with it so far. If he can manage this entire season without actually punching one of these **********s in the face, i'll say he will have shown incredible restraint. I would like him a whole lot better if he pulled a reverse Lenny Randle and actually tried to choke willie harris to death.
  13. went with my son to the game tonight, on a school trip. - got double charged at one food kiosk, and short changed at another. I guess Fred has them under orders to get the cash in by any means necessary; - we sat in the "Pepsi Porch"... which means i couldn't see McCutcheon's diving catch in CF. Looked good on the replay, though. Thanks for those great sightlines, Fred! - Bucs bat around twice, with nary a real hit hidden amongst the onslaught... wow, do we suck. But my son wants to stay because "we might score 7 in the 9th." Gotta love it, right? - on the way out, my son asks if Jason Bay is our new Shawn Green. "Indeed," i reply. He wanted to know why Willie Harris wasn't Shawn Green. "Because he's too busy being Shawn Gilbert" - on the bright side, the lack of crowd made getting out of the parking lot and onto the GCP a snap. new slogan: 75 wins or bust!
  14. Wright isn't a superstar. He isn't. Sorry, it's true. Fred's dead right on that one. David's a really good player and I like him and want to keep him but not a superstar. Not yet anyway. If you track Wright's production and progress as a player at Shea, he was most certainly a "superstar", in my view. He was in the top 10 in MVP balloting each of those seasons... all-star, gold glove, silver slugger, never less than a .912 OPS... he was our "5-category' demi-god poster child. Then he plays at CitiField and his career goes into the crapper; his 2nd year was a little better, but not great, and this year is more of the same. At Shea, his Ks were consistent (between 113-118), and then at ShitiField he starts striking out at a prodigious rate, even as his HR rate went down. Now, you can say its unrelated to the stadium, but he was 26 when his career went sideways, without any particular injury to cause it. Clearly he has changed his approach to make up for his home field disadvantage and its screwed him up. So sorry Fred, but if Dave's not a "superstar", its cuz you built your team a stadium specifically designed to fuck him up royally. Well done, sir. [golf clap]
  15. even if you don't want to play him in CF for some metaphysical reason, move Bay over and play Fartinez in LF. Bay has played CF before, and he's not that bad at it. I don't get Harris in this lineup, under any circumstances.
  16. go [crossout:20bvasf5]Patriots[/crossout:20bvasf5]... um, Seawolves!
  17. I don't see how someone can make all that money without getting very lucky. In my next life, I'm going to devote all of my studies and all of my schooling towards improving my luck. Because what they say is true: it's better to be lucky than anything else. Too much work. Just come back as the child of someone who was incredibly lucky. Which, i guess, is the kind of luck you really need, at least to start.
  18. grinning like a Cheshire cat he'll be. when i read that, verb placement made me think of Yoda. Topic to consider: was Yoda Irish?
  19. most earlier westerns make no attempt to show white racism toward natives and simply embrace white heroism against a hostile horde. I don't know see how one could accept that as preferable approach. and i don't give spoilers for 55 year old films. If you haven't seen it by now, then tough shit. Especially since the move was selected for preservation by National Film Registry in 1989, and has been cited as one of the greatest films of all time, with the 2007 AFI 100 Greatest American Films list ranking it in 12th place (they also name it the greatest Western of all time).
  20. I think reading 21st century post-racial sentiments onto a 1950s Western is irrelevant and unfair, and anyway SEARCHERS is about "seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians"" the way MOBY DICK is about a whale. It's about the nature of obsession, and what "heroism" is, and what it took to carve civilization out of an unforgiving wilderness. The Indians are totems, symbols of unforgiving Nature. Wayne stands with his fist upraised, shaking it at the hurricane. Ultimately, the love of family overrides his instincts and he rescues his niece, despite her having gone "native". He returns her to that cabin on the plains, and the movie ends with the family going inside, but the Duke cannot enter their world. He is uncivilized; he is necessary for civilization but not a part of it. He walks away from the camera as the door to the cabin closes behind him. This scene bookends the opening of the film, in which the door first opened and the camera went out into the West... And it's TEXAS like its CIMMERIA. It's "the West", and that's all it has to be. It's not a nature documentary. But even on the most literal (and least mythic) level, the movie doesn't celebrate Wayne's attitudes toward the Indians. In the end, he is as "other" as the Indians, and he is shut out (literally) for it. Still his hate fuels him, and gives him the strength to continue the search, just as love fuels the others. He was a necessary beast whose time was passing, but he got the job done. if anything, Ford is attacking racism as one of the bases for genocide against the native population. Even the more genteel characters express racist attitudes toward the indians, and especially toward miscegenation. That was the world in which Wayne's ETHAN EDWARDS lived. Edwards' racism is primarily motivated by desire for revenge against acts of cruelty actually committed by the commanches in the story against his family and community, not some small-minded prejudice formed outside experience. He is a complex character that to simply dismiss out of hand as a hateful racist is to miss the point entirely. Ford's westerns always had that corny, sentimental humor going on in the background, but this had a much hotter flame burning in the foreground, for which SEARCHERS deserves every accolade its achieved.
  21. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm about out of patience with Bay's suck. I don't know if the Mets have ever gotten a worse deal. So far in his Mets career, Bay has accumulated about 1.7 WAR over 491 PAs, at a cost of around $13m to date. Which is about $7.65m (and 289 PAs) per point of WAR. For comparison, Jeromy Burnitz delivered 2.4 WAR over 1283 PAs, for $19.5m. That's about $8.13M (and 535 PAs) per WAR point. So Bay has been better than Burnitz... but not by very much. It would be interesting to see this kind of breakdown on all mets FAs over time, especially broken down by the GMs that made the deals.
