  1. so Batista is basically taking Carrasco's slot in the pen, and Baxter has Pagan's slot as a LHed bat off the bench. Otherwise, it's basically the same team, except for following major changes: - Reyes, Beltran, Capuano, Pagan; + Torres, Cedeno, Santana, Ramirez oy.

If Byrdak is ready, then i assume Hererra is a goner, too? a shame; i like him and we might lose him if he has to pass through waivers. Herrera already passed through waivers. He's not on the 40 man. but what happens if we start with Byrdak on the DL and add Hererra to the roster, then we want to send him down when Byrdak comes back?

  4. why would we carry Johnson AND Nickeas, 2 Rhed non-hitting backup catchers? have they announced that?
  5. and so begins the first season in over a decade where i don't have a fantasy team. i hope i don't regret it. i doubt i will.
  6. This website is in honor of my great uncle, Casey Stengel. wow. your honoring him by selling off everything that ain't nailed to the walls? i love it when people are so lacking in self-awareness they don't even realize they're total douchebags. And by "i love it", i mean i don't. look, its his crap and if he wants to sell it, then fine. it's his right (presumably). but at least have the decency to be a little embarrassed about it, and be circumspect. try a private auction. don't put your name on this and scream "come and get it!"
  7. but Francis Frank gave it back in the top 8th (bunt single, Muffy error, walk, RBI groundout) in the 8th. I don't think an inning like that by Francisco is fairly characterized as "giving it back".
  8. or duda = 4 everybody else likely to be on the opening day roster = 4
  9. that's hilarious. he "fixed the game", huh? you mean, after he helped break it? and i'm sure that's why he wrote the book... not for notariety or money, but to fix the game. god what an asshole. everybody is a hero in their own story.
  10. "Hope" is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops at all And sweetest in the Gale is heard And sore must be the storm That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm I've heard it in the chillest land And on the strangest Sea Yet, never, in Extremity, It asked a crumb of Me. - Emily Dickinson "How wrong Emily Dickinson was! Hope is not "the thing with feathers". The thing with feathers has turned to be my nephew. I must take him to a specialist in Zurich." - Woody Allen
  11. well, kids read 1984 too. Um, yeah, Ceetar, they do... because its one of the great works of English literature and most important statements about politics, language and society in the 20th century. Not just cuz it's a good read. as for THE HUNGER GAMES... well, the jury is going to be out for a few decades to determine whether its literature that should be studied in its own right. As for what its saying that's relevant to teach socio-politically (saying what hasn't already been said by dozens of other better books about dystopias), that's what i'm asking about. I suspect the answer is "well, its like 1984!", to which i say, "then read 1984."
  12. the fact that my 14-year old daughter was instructed to read it for school, and then the school went on a class trip to see it opening day, makes me ask: "why?" I mean, i get why my daughter (whose only read the Twilight books, and whatever they make her read in school) liked it, with a girl protagonist and a love story at its core, but what is its message that is so important the school wants her to read it AND see it? that central governments are bad, states are good, and we should be in open revolt against Obama? Or am i reading too much into something i don't want to read at all? Or is there something else?
  13. Rubin projects an opening day roster that differs from this one as follows: * Hairston in CF (Torres on the DL), * M.Batista in the pen (Carrasco, Byrdak, Beato all on DL, and no Herrera), * Baxter on the bench (no Loewen)
  14. yeah, great thinking it was too. Vlad averaged .320/30hr/100rbi over the next 6 years with the Angels, with only the last season spent as a DH.
  15. the trade was more about Ramirez than Torres. Torres will hit .225, with some HRs and SBs, before getting DLed for the season.
  16. the guy reveals being sexually abused as a child and you guys are criticizing the writing style? really?
  17. well THAT'S a relief. for a minute there i thought you'd predict 100 wins and we'd have to criticize you for being hopelessly optimistic bordering on utterly deranged. thank goodness we don't have to go there. now come inside; it's raining and you'll catch your death. sit by the fire, here's some tea...
  18. yeah, really. wtf?
  19. Oh STFU well said.
  20. Again, great numbers overall and super guy but received an awful lot of oral while getting off to a 1-5 start last year that practically buried us. http://www.cranepoolforum.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15884 yeah, Bucket, except your first STFU was posted on 4/14 when Dickey was 1-2 (1 excellent start, 1 mediocre-bad start, 1 terrible start) which indicates some latent hostility not derived from a 1-5 start that hadn't yet occurred at that point.
  21. i agree... except for the parts about May and June.
  22. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: TheOldMole wrote: Why all the Dickey hostility? That's a question I've been asking for the last year or so. I don't know about faux-intellectualism-- the guy reads a lot, and knows big words, and gives-- diction aside-- more thoughtful postgame interviews than 99% of pro athletes do. He's in roughly the same percentile regarding perspective on the fragility of it all. And he's an amiable goof who throws a goofy, workingman's-weirdo pitch. And oh yeah-- he's given the team more innings, starts, and "quality starts" than any other pitcher on the roster since he joined the major-league team. This ++doubleplusgood
  23. 1. 5th - they'd finish 6th if they could 2. 72-90 3. No, the league would have needed to add 10 WCs for it to be a relevant issue for the 2012 Mets 4. oh, puleez
  24. 40g, 45ip, 3.3 era, but he reverts to career norms by walking too many guys in key situations (5.1bb/9ip in over 500ip in the minors; 4.7bb in over 100ip with Atlanta), losing Collins' trust and falling on the depth chart to lower leverage situations. And wit Rauch, Ramirez and Parnell ahead of him, he never gets a sniff of the 9th inning.
