1. Beltran stole two bases! I didn't know he could steal bases.(sarcasm mode turned off)
2. The double play... the pitcher's best friend. GET UP and stretch.
3. Maybe he can come back into the game, Sports Guy-column style:Gary Cohen: So it's 2-2 on the pinch-hitter Burrell. Bases are loaded, and Aaron Heilman is scuffling.Howie Rose: Aaron Heilman has not looked good today, Gary.Gary: No, no, he hasn't -- wait! What's that?! That's Pedro Martinez's music!PA System: (plays generic salsa music)Howie: Here he comes!Pedro: (comes running out of the dugout with a bat, cracks Heilman over the head and grabs the ball)Gary: He's gonna come back in the game!Howie: Burrell is stunned!Gary: And here's the pitch... freezes him! Strike 3! The ballgame is over! Pedro picks up a win and a save in the same game!
4. Gotta get Looper an inning in this game; he hasn't pitched since Sunday. He'll pitch the ninth no matter what.
5. And just like that, Cliff Floyd is now the 41st-most-stealingest Met of all time, tied with Brett Butler, Chico Walker, and Ron Hunt at 21.
6. Or strike out. Whatever.Could we deal Cameron before he wakes up and remembers he's a career .250 hitter?
7. Come on, Cammy. Break this baby wide open.
8. That's weird. Sportsline says the first two pitches to Pedro were both balls, up and in.
9. Rollins homers and Pedro's down 1-0.
10. Make it happen, Omar.
11. And Dunn has a career OBP of .382.Dunn isn't Dave Kingman; he's Reggie Jackson. I'd love to see him in a Mets uni.
12. Cameron 1Floyd 3Offerman 1Koo 2Bell 1Graves 1Heilman 1
13. Nope. He homered twice in a game in Chicago in 1983, and his third that season came three starts later.
14. Zambrano's been very good. His ERA has dropped from 5.81 to 3.84, which places him 27th in the NL, ahead of guys like Carlos Zambrano, Jason Marquis, Jeff Weaver, and Javier Vazquez. In fact, only NINE starters in all of baseball who have made as many starts (9) since May 5 have had a lower ERA than Zambrano. The guy has been beyond pretty good... I know he's frustrating with the walks and the jams, and he's only 3-3 over those starts, but he's been very good.
15. Edgy DC wrote:(8) I forget what (8) was for.LOL. Nice. I hope you know that this will go down in your permanent record.
16. 2002-2005:APRIL (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS) .286 .449 .621 1.070 MAY .238 .376 .495 .871 JUNE .267 .399 .547 .946 JULY .267 .411 .512 .923 AUGUST .204 .325 .432 .757 SEPTEMBER .208 .326 .366 .692Looks like he slows down over the course of the year, then completely falls off the map after the All-Star Break. Interesting.
17. 1962: Sandy Koufax no-hits the Mets.1978: Dave Parker collides with John Stearns, breaking Parker's cheekbone and causing him to wear that special face mask. (Uni Watch found a photo of it, but I can't find the Uni Watch archives.)1989: Ron Darling homers in his second straight start, becoming only the second Mets pitcher to accomplish that feat (Seaver was the first).2000: The aforementioned 10-run inning.Neat day of history, methinks. And it's Ron Swoboda's birthday.
18. Edgy DC wrote:Yeah, good plan, Nicely-Nicely.Then we'll count all the cheese cakes and bet Sky on how many cheese cakes have been sold.Huh?!? Edgy, you have to stop smoking those funny-smelling cigarettes so early in the morning.
19. Start Heilman, let him get a handful of solid games under his belt, then trade him and Diaz for Dunn.
20. The Braves are carrying 13 pitchers right now? Connie Mack is rolling over in his grave.edit: And speaking of the Braves, this is pretty funny (and features Don Zimmer Falling Down, one of my favorite P-Boink characters). Try as I might, I just can't hate Julio Franco. I wish he was a Met.Julio Franco's first two appearances against the Mets came against Terry Leach, in his 10-inning one-hitter in 1982, and Scott Holman, who last threw a pitch in September 1983 and made his major league debut against Phil Garner, Don Robinson, and Omar Moreno.
21. That moves Cliff into a tie for the 52nd best all-time Mets HR season:52. 1998 Brian McRae 2153. 1993 Jeff Kent 2154. 1985 George Foster 21 55. 2001 Robin Ventura 21 56. 2004 Richard Hidalgo 21 57. 2005 Cliff Floyd 21
22. Quiet IGT.Jose Offerman picks up his first Metsand it's 6-2 bad guys going to the sixth.
23. Since Rotblatt's had so much luck with Willie lately, can we ask him to post against any Sheffield trade?
24. Or WP or IP/SK could recruit you to be a librarian.
