  1. My knock on the give-the-wild-card-team-one-home-game thing is that it unnecessarily robs the fans of the wild card team of a chance to watch their team play. And home-field advantage is really only a slight factor anyway in determining a game's outcome. So it punishes the fans a lot more than it punishes the players. Also in the article, Verducci debunks "myths" about October baseball. One of the things he says is that in the wild-card era, the home team has just a .533 winning percentage (208-182). If not a play-in game, perhaps a 3-game series? I dunno, just throwing ideas out there.
  2. Why not, if it keeps Nationals from crossing the plate. Then you can double-switch in Dookie if Humber comes out of the ballgame.
  3. I was browsing sports sites, looking for their takes on the NL MVP race, when I stumbled upon an article by Tom Verducci at SI: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/tom_verducci/09/25/wild.card/index.html He makes an interesting case for adding a second wild card in each league. His idea is that the two wild-card teams would face each other for a play-in game to get to the division series. Personally, I like the idea. Makes me think of the one-game playoff against Cincinnati in 1999, which was an incredible game. It gives division winners essentially a first-round bye. Why not?
  4. I think it'll come down to the wire now, but if Wright continues doing what he's been doing, I think he has a fantastic shot at it. He's hitting .417 (20 for 48) with 6 doubles, 2 homers and 7 RBIs during his current 11-game hit streak. We just gotta win some ballgames. Tony Gwynn gave his predictions the other day for the NL MVP: 1. Prince Fielder 2. Matt Holliday 3. Chase Utley/Jimmy Rollins
  5. Maybe it's because Sandy Alderson left for San Diego? I dunno. Regardless, the umps have been injecting their personal beefs into the games more and more this season. And I gotta throw the name of Tim Donaghy into this, again.
  6. Come on Moises! Go for 28 baby!
  7. It seems like all of Jose's game has been plummeting.
  8. Come on, Pelfrey! Go out there and throw some strikes!
  9. Not Gomez again...
  10. Toronto currently leading the MFYs 4-1 heading into the 9th.
  11. A case can be made for Rollins, but I think Utley gets more of the Phillies vote. David's gotta have a fantastic final week if he's gonna win this thing. Here's how I see the voting right now: 1. Holliday 2. Wright 3. Fielder 4. Utley 5. Pujols The Rockies' recent surge, propelled by Holliday, has vaulted him into the lead, in my opinion.
  12. The Dodgers have been eliminated in the NL West. They have a tragic number of 2 for the wild card. The Mariners have a tragic number of 1, and the Tigers have a tragic number of 2. The Braves' tragic number for the NL East is 2, and 4 for the wild card.
  13. I wish I were a columnist for one day just so I can have a field day with Milton Bradley. For example: Because Milton Bradley decided to get Ants in the Pants, he got himself in a lot of Trouble. He now has to go get an Operation. His Battleship is sunk. He likely cost himself some Easy Money. So goes the Game of Life.
  14. Remember when he yelled on the basepaths and caused that guy to drop the ball? Another example.
  15. Well sure, take a look at him, I'm all for that. But considering our recent history with bringing players in from other countries, I'd at least be cautious. Remember, if we sign the guy to replace Castillo, not only are we replacing our second baseman but our #2 hitter as well. Would he work there? Or would we need to find another #2 hitter? And would his defense at second base be comparable or better than Castillo? How about his speed? I just want to make sure he'd be a good fit for this ballclub.
  16. He wants to sign as a shortstop to follow in the footsteps of his favorite players, "Ozzie Smith, Rey Ordonez, and Omar Vizquel." I don't trust a guy whose idol is Rey Freaking Ordonez. And we already have a shortstop. At least see if El Duque can give us any kind of scoop. If not, I'm not worried about the dude.
  17. The left side of our infield is comprised of All-Stars. I'm totally over the A-Rod thing. Besides, the play that defines A-Rod for me, that interference play against the Red Sox, would make me loathe having him on my team. He plays dirty. I prefer playing the game the way it's supposed to be played.
  18. Monroe was one of three of our first five presidents (the others being Adams and Jefferson) to die on July 4.
  19. WE WON!!!!!! And finally, we get some breathing room back.
  20. Not Schoeneweis... I can't look.
  21. We need two more.
  22. Meh. Well, we get the lead. Now we just gotta get three guys out.
  23. Who's gonna pitch the bottom half?
  24. MVP!!! MVP!!!
  25. This is it, David! Make this your MVP moment!!!
