Cool to see Sarah Seaver interviewed, and everybody behind her looks a little like Tom in a different way.

McCann bringing the gun.

Just tuning in. Happy Hank Webb Day.

I agree. As I wrote above, whichever offers the first, best, and most convenient explanation for pulling a pitcher from a game.

Up/downs and down/ups being, of course, Luis' new way of reverting to innings pitched as a measure of usage. I guess it's a human quality — you add an artificial sophistication as a façade to resist real sophistication. An insecure response to the fear that the world is passing you by.

Called Jay an anti-Semitic Semite.

The weird thing is that, when pitch counts became of primary concern, "innings pitched" seemed to become more understood to be an artificial construct. What was an inning? It was three pitches to one pitcher and 40 to another. Definitely better to use total pitch count when judging how much work a twirler has done. But now, we'll use both/and. Whichever offers the first, best, and most convenient explanation for pulling a pitcher from a game.

NAME: J.D. Davis AGE: 29 POSITION: Third Base (also left field, first base, and maybe, in theory, a little pitching) NUMBER: 28 NICKNAME: "Sun Bear," "Bubbles," or "Dizzle" fWAR IN 2021: 1.6 ZIPS PROJECTION FOR 2022: 1.2 I have seen the future, and the future is no more Catch-22 threads about guys in AA who won't be heard from until the ... future. But there is a future I cannot see, and that is how my 2022 is going to work out. I go into the season with confidence, but that isn't likely to take root very deeply if I'm only stealing occasional at-bats as DH against lefties when Alonso isn't. It's a role, and I don't mean to sneeze at it, but it's a hard position from which to recreate my deadly 2019. And that's what I'm trying to do here. Did you know that I slugged .527 in 2019? Well, I did! But a season has many moving parts, guys get hurt, other guys get moved around or lose starts to slumps. Outside of catcher, I'm sort of indirectly on the depth chart at every position. The only guys that can lose plate appearances without benefiting me are the catchers. Until then I've got to hit. If I do, anything can happen. So tell me, what's gonna happen? The Syracuse Mets have obviously escaped any roster restrictions by ordering from the all-you-can-eat buffet. They've got dozens on their roster. They've got a taxi squad. They've got guys who are reported to be with the team but haven't been activated. They can pitch seven guys every day (a staff of 19!), and it doesn't matter, because they're still taking it on the chin. When they are not getting their asses delivered to them COD by the Yankees' affiliate in Albany, they're getting swirlied by the Yankees' former affiliate in Columbus. It all adds up to a 1-6 start leaving them 5 1/2 games out in dead fucking last in the International League East standings. In tribute to the 60th anniversary of the 1962 Mets, dead fucking last means tenth in the IL's ten-team divisions. Nowhere to go but up, but they are looking up at a lot fot eams. While starting a game no longer means all that much time to put an imprint on it, but rather simply says that you're the first of many pitchers, the strongest starter thus far has been Mike Montgomery. The veteran Mariner/Cub/Royal has pitched 7 2/3 innings over two starts while yielding but three hits and a lone run on a homer. Striking out seven and walking one, he currently seems to be the next in line for any emergency starts that might pop up. You like relievers. Sure! We all do, in theory! Then Joely goes out there and we start theorizing somebody else! Well, theorize Colin Holderman. The 2016 community college draftee has had a long trip to triple-A, but now he's making the most of it, allowing but a single baserunner an no earnies in 3 1/3 innings. Colin is coming off an autumn of pummeling, where he got absolutely hammered in the Arizona Fall League, so this strong start has got to be particularly gratifying, and for now, carer saving. I know what you might hope to see is hitting. Well, there hasn't been a lot of it to see, unless you're looking at Daniel Paika. The one-time White Sock is trying to recapture his 2008 fifth-in-rookie-of-the-year-voting form, and has taken a strong first step, providing two doubles and a homerun to the cause in his first dozen at bats. He is splitting time between first base and right field, and for now, looks like your best bet if Mark Canha blows a cylinder. The Orangemets try to scratch their way back to relevance today, continuing their six-game set at Columbus. Their starter hasn't been announced, but Jordan Yamamoto hasn't been launched yet, so maybe it's him if he's healthy to go. Having lost the first two games of the series 5-0 and 5-0, he better hope for defensive flubs by the Clippers. It might be the only support he gets. NAME: Brett Baty AGE: 22 POSITION: Third Base (and some left field) NUMBER: 96 in spring training, but currently rocking 22 in Bingo NICKNAME: "Brett the Met" fWAR IN 2021: 0.0 ZIPS PROJECTION FOR 2022: 1.3 Hi, I'm Brett Baty, your Mets 2019 top draft pick and high-end prospect almost three-years later. While there was some buzz about me opening at AAA, somebody decided I needed more than 40 games at AA. Either that, or maybe they figured Mark Vientos and I would fight if we were kept in the same cage. So while Eduardo Escobar was treating all the Mets personnel to Fogo de Chao on the eve of the big league opener, I was in Binghamton, treating all the Rumble Ponies peeps to Fogo de Quiznos. You gotta pay your dues, you know? But maybe ZIPS knows something the Mets don't, because they have me projected for 1.3 big league fWAR in 2022, and that's more than, say, Edwin Díaz or J.D. Davis. Maybe that gets a WtF from you, but I've started my season here in the re-named Eastern League with a 1.261 OPS through my first five games. So who's WtFing now? Huh? Still, I've got a few hurdles to clear before I'm adding value to a major league roster. David Wright went from AA to AAA to the bigs in one year. It all depends on how things break. So how are they going to break? Many people state as a matter of fact that Bartman reached onto the field of play. Beyond that, (a) Alou made a heck of an effort but I don't think the evidence suggests he was reeling that one in*, and probably not even touching it, and ( that was 2021 Mets first base coach Tony Tarasco underneath that Derek Jeter warning track fly ball. * Moisés https://www.espn.com/mlb/news/story?id=3324343agreed back in 2008.

It went off his glove, then rolled down the aisle and was handed to him while the MFYs treated him like a hero for something which would have gotten him thrown out of the stadium had he done it in the other half inning. And Bartman didn't reach across the railing.

Shoulda stuck with Luigi.

That was a better Loogy than the Last Loogy.

Asking for a lot, maybe but it seems to me that if the Bronze Tom can ride up and down the LIE on a U-Haul trailer, it can be introduced on the field before being rolled to its permanent location and secured during the game.

My wife confirms this. Good catch. Of course, in this particular game, you'd figure the first diacritical mark to trigger the glitch would have been an umlaut.

I can't endorse the loser reliever strategy. Put in a winner!

Sean Reid-Foley is fascinating. The mustache that looks like he's auditioning for a film in 1931, and he looks like he poops before every pitch.

Game. Cracked. Open.

Scherzer finishes strong and is probably done, but he seemed to get detained a moment at the end of the inning by the ump examining his hand.

Maxmillian may have trouble finishing this inning.

Canha leavin' 'em loaded certainly supports that notion. Probably not so much last season, but it seemed like for a few years before that, just getting into the Phillies bullpen felt like a red carpet being rolled out.

You can't hit a homer on a pitch at your ankles, Pete. You're not Mookie.
