The Brooklyn Nine won a pistol of a game yesterday, trailing 2-1 into the bottom of the seventh before centerfielder and Flushing native Jaylen Palmer stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and crushed a grand slam, providing the difference in the Cyclones 5-2 win. [media=youtube]JJWqmHn1x6g[/media] Jaylen had been gaining some prospect traction (most sites placed him in the top 15), but transitioning from shortstop/infielder into centerfield. One might presume that was because he was blocked at shortstop, but he's been hitting just terribly most of this year, so it was looking like the development team had bigger problems than Jaylen being blocked. He has been showing power in between racking up piles of strikeouts. He's a strapping, athletic, Starling Marte-type, only bigger (6'4", 208), and maybe minor-leaguing in your hometown is a bad idea (he stunk in Brooklyn last year, also, but was much better in St. Lucie. If you'd prefer rooting for an out-of-towner over a Holy Cross High School kid, you might turn your eyes a few degrees toward right field. There you'll find Newtown, Pennsylvania's own Brandon McIlwain. Brandon was a Cal-Berkeley player who had gone unpicked in the abbreviated draft of 2021. He's one of the oldest Clones, but he's been hitting like a vet, leading the team with a .284 / .377 / .446 // .822 line. If you recognize his name, it may be because he's a veteran of big time college football, having the rare distinction of throwing a touchdown pass in both the SEC (as a South Carolina Gamecock) and the Pac-12 (as a Cal Golden Bear). Now he's a Met prospect getting better every month, logging a .676 OPS in April, an .872 in May, and a .926 so far in June. [FIMG=415]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Eazpf7nU8AAfD0X?format=jpg&name=large[/FIMG] [FIMG=415]https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-images/image/private/t_16x9/t_w1536/mlb/u32xobi8dbnhdbiark8k.jpg[/FIMG] But maybe it's starting pitching that gets you excited. If that's true, then lemme introduce you to Nick Zwack. Apart from having a name that's a Batman sound effect, Nick is a lefthander out of Minnesota, and that's the kind of Mets origin story that ends with you getting your number retired. Through six starts, he's thrown 23 innings and put up a Koosmanian 2.74 ERA, striking out 25 and walking but five. FIVE!!! [FIMG=600]https://goxavier.com/images/2021/5/1/DSC05801.jpg?width=1416&height=797&mode=crop&quality=80&format=jpg[/FIMG] But the ones who make it the fastest are the relievers, and Grant Hartwig is looking to make it from Hogwarts (to judge by his name) to Citi Field. Hartwig, the savior of yesterday's game, has yet to allow a run in 8 2/3 innings with the Clones, and in fact has only allow four hits and two walks while striking out 13. Grant started his sweet run a couple of weeks back picking up one of those classic mopup saves — getting the S added to his register for pitching three innings to finish the game, despite a 14 run lead. Since then he's been the Edwin Diaz of Brooklyn. Hartwig. Remember that name. [FIMG=600]https://miamiredhawks.com/images/2021/7/17/GrantHartwigDraftWebsite.jpg?width=942&quality=80&format=jpg[/FIMG] Brooklyn is off to Wilmington next to take on the Quicksteps Blue Rocks in a marathon eight-game series. EIGHT!! Holy shit, right? But they had a period last month where they were rained out two-games out of three for like two weeks. Both teams intend to pitch TBD in the opener, so I imagine his arm will be real tired. Hopefully, they'll use this epic showdown to make up some ground between the second-place Rocks and their fourth place selves, where they sit 13 1/2 games out in the South Atlantic League North Division, which is geographically just a really stupid place for a Brooklyn team to be. Looks like the room has been validated with their Brave selection. Acuna is back. They've won 11 in a row. They did it while most were happy-ish to see the Mets tread water on the West Coast. They fell behind in the first third of the season last year, before tearing ass after that. They are now 5.5 games back. Phils have gone 9-1 at the same time, but the Mets have played most of their season series with them already.

I certainly wasn't knocking the painting.

Tom Seaver's Uniform Indignities, in No Particular Order Winning his 300th game in a softball uniform. Posing for Andy Warhol in his Cincinnati pullover. Frequently having the arc of his Mets career misrepresented by depicting him in the 1983 uniform. Having the wrong 4 on his back on his statue. Being depicted by Sears as four Seavers talking to each other in mix-and-match separates. [FIMG=315]https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/w_2000,h_2000,c_fit/https%3A%2F%2Fsouthsideshowdown.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fgetty-images%2F2017%2F07%2F73311344.jpeg[/FIMG] [FIMG=216]http://www.artnet.com/WebServices/images/ll00640lldMXbJFgUNECfDrCWvaHBOcGbyF/andy-warhol-tom-seaver.jpg[/FIMG] [FIMG=169]https://s.abcnews.com/images/Sports/tom-seaver-ap-mo-20200902_1599093589193_hpMain_4x5_608.jpg[/FIMG] [FIMG=352]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FRjDaAVVIAA60Ul?format=jpg&name=900x900[/FIMG] [FIMG=352]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ij8AAOSw-i9e0gVg/s-l1600.jpg[/FIMG]

Well, if that design exists, clearly in this image it's being placed over that shirt via digital template, because it'd be hard to get that chestplate any more off-center.

I wouldn't dream of it.

Heritage is the right word. And that's why nobody bitched when variations on the seventies designs became the design foundation for the PetCo All Star Game. Heritage, as Southern MAGA demonstrates ever day, can be a dangerous word used to justify all sorts of horseshit, but I agree that it lends credibility to otherwise garish-looking kits. Clearly many others do also. The White Sox have no such excuse. I love the Pirates pillbox hats, and I agree completely with every team that barely wore them in 1976 and almost nobody wore them after. But the Pirates made it their own and won a championship in them. I imagine the 1986 championship has given the Mets orange piping far more forgiveness than they might otherwise garner. Same with the 2000 pennant and the black tops. While I may feel less charitably toward those changes, I understand those who feel moreso. I can defend all sorts of things that were going on when I was 13. Some of those defenses might even make sense.

What a damn shame. When I have the exclusive license to print these things, the cards will be printed in a maddeningly perfect proportion. If a guy never hits the 2[CROSSOUT]5[/CROSSOUT]6-man roster, he never sees a card released. If Adonis Medina gets demoted, even for a day, his card falls out of production for that day, and returns to production when he rejoins the roster. This may initially make the factory floor a very stressful place to be, but in the end, all will celebrate the accurate representation of who is and isn't a major league player.

Depending on the context, I'm OK with numbers on the thigh. It can be totally sexy, but still have a professional function. And I like the Astro rainbows, even though it clearly is a cousin to the Sox look. But I've got little good to say about that Sox kit. It looked like a stupid uniform for big jiggly weekend softballers flailing away and Ron Kittle and Greg Luzinski certainly did nothing to dissuade that impression. If I was playing against a team in that uniform, I would say, "Looks like we're going to be playing a bunch of assholes." Even the number on the thigh, despite my charitable thoughts in that direction, makes little sense. A dark number across the midsection of an Astros uniform would've gotten lost, so the thigh has an argument for itself. The Sox had a clear field to work with across the midsection, but they went below the belt.

Damn, Guilorme can't even win a PotW.

Yes, the shorts have already come up. And several times now, it's been stated that the idea was to steer clear of kits that only appeared ephemerally and were not part of a season-long rotation. I resign in shame.

Again, endless beisbols make for a mortifying backdrop. is "Pacific Amigos" the publisher or is it a series put out by one of the other publishers?

Wow, I guessed that Carrasco pretty much had Pitcher of the Month sewn up, but I thought Player of the Month would be a three-way dogfight among Alonso, Lindor, and Guillorme. Turned out that Walker challenged Carrasco pretty nicely, and that Guillorme barely appeared in the field at all. A .414 monthly batting average sure doesn't buy what it used to.

Kevin Bass sure had me stumped. Came up as a Brewer, you say? What outlet produced this 'un? https://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1993/Pacific-Beisbol-Amigos---Base/10/Jaime-Navarro-Jesse-Orosco.jpg?id=75e6e8c1-88c7-4c79-b801-2b1329e35b16&size=original> Endless baseball wallpaper can be kinda kreepy.

I'm very disappointed in the 1989 Mets for allowing Mark Carreon to slip into their top 12. Mid-season trades, mid-season injuries and half-hearted transitions led to a lot of partial seasons on that team.

Anthony Swarzak hasn't yet converged with Adam Ottavino to become a single entity in mind. But they are trying.

You can call Francisco "Lionel Richie," because he can't slow down. Hit homer #13 in the first for Bingo today. Jordal Yamamoto picked up the win with two innings in relief.

Mets got three homers today (from Smittty, Daniel Paika, and a newly reactivated Mark Vientos) in soundly beating Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 10–1. In fact, Jupiter squeezing out a 5–4 walkoff against St. Lucie was the only thing that kept Sunday from being an organizational sweep.

That's just disgraceful.

I picked 10, so if the Mets can pull off 5 out of 3, I'm looking genius.

Keeping the MVP on the bench is a really sweet gift from Phil Nevin.

Frayed Knot wrote: No need to mention how big that extra run is ... but I guess I just did. Sumbuddy in the CBS booth called it "simply an enormous pad." I'm not quite going to go there.

Alonso smash.

That's also what you buy your ticket for. 102. Wow.
