In many ways, it resembles a John Sayles film more than a Redford one. The protagonist even seems to be to be styled after and shot like Springsteen.

If anything, Redford dials back some of the magic realism from the source novel, which is weird, since Redford has frequently tended to dial it up in films with more anglo-centric themes. Redford films also tend to be beautifully shot, with the like of A River Runs Through It, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and The Natural (which he didn't direct) all featuring green and gold fields of a pre-war America and golden-haired hero kissed by beatific sunlight. This one is shot in New Mexico, which is also gorgeous of course, but not in the same lush way. So even though it is set in his backyard, he doesn't let the cinematographer do all the heavy lifting and instead relies on a fun ensemble cast and a solid story THAT SPEAKS TO US TODAY!

Poor New Mexico landowner, in a pique over a lack of work, decides to irrigate his beanfield, despite obscure water rights prohibitions that have shut down all the local farmers. His momentary act of defiance triggers a land war between the citizens of a dying town and land developers, along with the politicians in their pockets. That makes for good MbtN content. What digits do MLBS's and other celebs wear for their personal visits to Shea? Like 50 Cent wearing 50 for his infamous first pitch. I remember an old yearbook photo of Good Morning America host David Hartman visiting with Joe Torre in his office and wearing 7 to represent ABC's Channel 7 New York affiliate.

Chet was a terrific player. Had been in bad shape (could not speak or walk) from over a dozen strokes. I always thought of him as pretty heavy for such a good centerfielder, but the weird White Sox pullovers with the flyaway collars just made everyone look heavy. When he became a Tiger, and his uniform hung better on his frame, he looked like a super-athlete badass. And in that small outfield at Tiger Stadium seemed to be filled with violently athletic football types with him, Kirk Gibson, Larry Herndon, and Johnny Grubb.

I approve of this film. I am surprising myself by going over 3 1/2 for a film of this genre, but it gets four bass drums from me. Every time it zigged along in a pleasing-enough-but-predictable pattern, it zagged off at the right time into some new territory. I like that they were able to reference Black Sabbath without playing "Paranoid" or "Iron Man," but instead played the hell out of "War Pigs" — not the obvious pick of the klassick rawk programmers but definitely the one that gets real metal heads going. They played it so much that it was hard to tell where "War Pigs" ended and their killer original "Machinery of Torment" began.

Some further food for thought: McNeil has only just begun his rehab schedule, with two games for St. Lucie, so he probably isn't ready to be activated just yet. Álvarez is ahead of McNeil, and the Mets have the option of carrying three catchers, while using Francisco on a limited catching schedule, and otherwise deploying him as a righthanded DH, moving Marte into the outfield mix. A lot of discussion in the booth about him last night, about how he is working on a new, more disciplined approach, but an .050 batting average has a way of making you revert your old free-swinging ways. Whatever limits his old approach had, it got him to the big leagues and has kept him there so far. For what it's worth, his nine-pitch walk last night was sort of a stealth Turning Point of the Game. We haven't double-checked, but we believe it has been at least 180 years since the Mets have gone this far into the season without a transaction affecting the big-league roster. Since Francisco was already working out in St. Lucie, he did not have to go too far or take too long to report, and he debuted last night, playing five innings behind the dish, catching the 100 mph fastball of Raimon Gómez, but sadly giving up four stolen bases. At the plate, he went 1-for-3 with a strikeout and a GiDP.

I'm glad this gets a thumbs-up from you. It would be a shame if a great name like Eephus was wasted on just another bad baseball film.

Footloose Observation #12: When the daughter goes to the drive-in diner and gets the whole place moving by putting a cassette recording of Cameo's "Dancing in the Sheets" on her boombox, she is presented as a champion of resistance and free spirits, but in fact, when her father shows up shortly after and hits the boombox' STOP button, he is the real hero. Footloose Observation #13: The probably unintentional joke at the center of this movie is that these teens have spent their lives in a town that has banned dancing at least since they were five or six, but when they are finally allowed to dance, they are initially shy, but then turn into professional-quality breakdancers like a switch has been thrown, laying down The Worm and The Moonwalk like they invented them.

Having rewatched, it is worth pointing out that this film features a brief, unbilled performance by Tiajuan Walker.
