Mets still looking for their first walk too. I'm not anticipating no MRI.

Welp, homers. Down and too much plate again.

I'm guessing Álvarez stays in if he faces a righty, at least for his third trip to the plate. That might change if it becomes something like two on and one out.

Take a pitch in a DP situation. It won't kill ya.

Fried freed!

100 strikeouts?!!

Mets have gotten away from their hit-it-to-left strategy.

Guillorme gets "Werewolves of London."

Life isn't unsettling enough, so here's a woman's thumb sprouting a mouth and giving her shit.

Lindor is the captain of my heart.

They're not touching that fastball when it's up. But he left it down and over the plate twice in a row.

This places him second all-time among Mets pitchers with career scoreless runs, behind only C.J. Nitkowski, who held Mets opponenents scoreless over 5 2/3 innings and got out with the glory. This record was briefly exceeded this season by Tommy Hunter, but unlike C.J., lacked the foresight to get out while the getting was good. Darin Ruf also may be looking at the end of his tenure, but he still could appear in the playoffs. That's perhaps not likely, but neither is it a possiblity to be lightly dismissed. Buck has a challenge before him in bench management, now having only four non-catching substitutes on his roster, two of whom have yet to don a glove as a Met (a description that also applies to young Mr. Álvarez. I don't think so. There's time enough for the hot stoving.

I tend to think that teams at the bottom of the standings can get themselves up to play their best and act as spoiler in the last weeks, but not in series after series. The Cubs and the Marlins can hurt two or three teams in a row, but I have trouble thinking the Nats or the Bucs will. I don't want that to read as overconfident or nothing. All respect to the Nats. Spirit of Frank Robinson, hear me now.

Well, they started a pitcher named "Falter" today and as much as that sounds like a commitment to faltering, they're up 1-0 over the Nats. It's the first of two, with Syndergaard going for them in the nachtspiel.

Eight is also associated with catchers because when numbers were originally linked to positions in the batting order, the catcher typically batted eighth. I think he'll get a September number (probably 78 or 88), before moving to something more permanently (yes, eight would be greight) next year. Also, depending on how he does over the next week, a September number might be what he chooses to be his permanent number. He's swaggery enough that he seems like he'd like something quirky as part of his brand.

Fact of Fun-ness: Joel Sherman of The Post was scooped on this by five minutes. The first to break the story was Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase. Meet the new sheriff.

I called it! I mean, I sort of predicted it and I still don't believe it. Bad news for the Braves, I think. Still, I kind of wish this was kept on the down-low until shortly before game-time.

Don't remember it, which is a strong indicator. Did it seem to you guys that Diaz was on a whole nother level last night? He missed the plate (by a lot) on one pitch, but otherwise he seemed like a good college pitcher throwing to Little Leaguers. I can't remember seeing such domination ever, and I've seen Gibson, Koufax, Seaver, Guidry, Blue. It was almost too easy for him.... To be honest, that was like the fifteenth-best I've seen Diaz this season. He was pitching above and beyond that for about six weeks. He's hopefully returning to that form, and he clearly doesn't need his best form to prosper, but for a good chunk of the season, his slider had more lateral movement, and his fastball more burn. It was cruel as shit. You don't want to make too much of velocity, but this pitch came right down the middle to a .300 hitter. (He was at the time, anyhow.)

The Phils have now lost four in a row. The first two were to the Braves, and that's nothing to be ashamed of, but the last two were to the Cubs. The Cubs also hurt the Mets and nobody should be taken for granted, but this little spin has the Brewers within half a game, and has some hyperbolic Phils phans invoking the 1964 collapse. I think that's crazy, because how can you collapse from third place? It was always going to be a daily struggle. But now that the daily struggle is here, who do you want to see win this? I'm not going to poll this because we'd get caught between arguing for the team we'd rather see get that playoff spot for the Mets' sake. I'm kind of pulling for the Phils. Having played the Brewers twice now, I'm not sure they really feel like a real team. Going up against them feels like going up against a league-owned team managed by an algorithm. Their goofy new park name certainly underscores that. Miller was part of their brand identity like very few other stadium sponsors. Without Miller (a real, live BREWER, for Pete's sake), what are they? No matter how the end shakes out, this season represents a reversal of fortune for the Phillies. I hope the Phils pull a Jerry Manuel, mistake this turnaround as manager-driven, hire Thomson full-time, and watch him collapse next season. But this season, I'm pulling for the Liberty Bell team ... to get that last playoff spot, anyhow.

Did you not get to see the ninth-inning comeback against the Phils early in the season?

I tend also not to have Buck's faith in Guillorme against lefties. The first answer, I guess, is to get Marte on the field. I still have a dream scenario where Álvarez comes up and lands like a bomb. Only, like, a good bomb.

It takes all kinds.

Albert Pujols can hit 700. Aaron Judge can hit 61. Willie Mays just showing up is a bigger story than either, for me.

I hears you, though I don't make much of reverse splits. I think it's getting close to certain that Ruf doesn't make the post-season roster. Who gets that job, though, may not be as clear.
