Robinson Canó could potentially — and I'm saying this with full understanding of the unlikeliness — receive playoff money from three different teams. Robinson Canó — despite playing for three playoff-bound National League teams — did not play for the eventual pennant winner, because he cursed those three teams. Robinson Canó somehow gave his best baseball in 2022 to the Mets. Robinson Canó's lone 2022 homerun, presumably the last of the 335 homers in his tainted career, was hit on Jackie Robinson Day.

I'm not so sure I support a second Turner tenure. I am OK with a second non-tendering.

Cranksgiving is funny. Needs more votes.

I wonder what MLB meant by "arbitrarily"? Like some movable fence that was moved 30 feet closer to home plate when the home team batted but was moved 40 feet farther away from home plate when the visitors batted? And even that doesn't sound so arbitrary. Sounds very methodical to me. "Arbitrary" was my characterization. The rule stated that dimensions established on or before X date (which was many years past at that point) could not be changed without acquiring some sort of waiver from the league. The idea appeared to be to discourage tailoring a ballpark for the new slugger you acquired. Maybe it came after the Yankees closed in Death Valley after(?) they got Dave Winfield. The other rules I remember from the early part of the book involved dressing the pitcher. The pitcher's glove had to be uniform in color and could not be gray and could not be white. I'm pretty sure pitchers routinely wear multi-colored gloves and possibly gray gloves now. Probably not white. The pitcher also could not wear a white or gray sleeve that extended beyond the elbow (either elbow?). I'm relatively certain that rule is still in effect.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that someone like Brandon Nimmo can really exist. At first I thought that whole golly-gee, always smiling sprint to first thing was a bit of a schtick. But over the years, it seems this is who he really is. He's a devout Christian, seems authentic in wanting to be kind and do good. But somehow supports this modern Republican party. I mean, I just can't believe what type of disinformation can be out there that someone like Nimmo could justify aligning with some of these guys. Just mind-blowing. Nimmo's https://www.opensecrets.org/search?q=brandon+nimmo&type=donorsgiven the former president $1500. That's really depressing, until I think that Steve Cohen has given the guy, like, millions. And Mets board member Chris Christie may be more responsible for the nightmare presidency than anybody.

When I first read the MLB rules, perhaps in 1982, one of the first rules was specifically forbidding teams from arbitrarily changing their ballpark configuration from year to year.

I just tend to think that they're all Boras clients when push comes to shove.

Nobody on the Mets — and few people in baseball — can do what Nimmo does. I don't relish the Mets trying to make Cahna or Guillorme their regular leadoff hitter. But something happened with Nimmo this season. It was like somebody cool started making fun of him for his restraint and if finally got to him, and he totally fell out of his game, swinging at first pitches and being set up instead of setting the pitcher up. When the Mets of a certain vintage were down at the end of a game, I used to think that, at least, the team had Backman coming up in the ninth, so we'd probably get a baserunner. This year, I was looking at Nimmo coming up in the ninth, and instead of expecting the Mets' best on-base guy to, you know, get on base, I had come to expect him to come up hacking at the first pitch, and generally popping to short center. Nimmo had some really big moments this season, but it was a surprisingly frustrating year for me watching him from day to day. He seemed to muscling up and trying to yank more homers in June and July and his game just became unrecognizable. I should be able to forgive him for two shitty months. He certainly finished strong enough, but ... i dunno. I'm having trust issues. That said, if I'm Colorado, I'm targeting the hell out of him.

Good to see that the guy is so good at what he does and we get his name wrong twice.

Godammit, people!! Two esses in GOOSSEN!

If there's gonna be review, I certainly prefer the challenge made on the field without first calling the replay guy in the dugout. Of course, the likelihood of the batter or pitcher getting a signal to challenge from somebuddy with quick access to video review (or statcast data) is high. Congratulations to Hockberg though. That's kind of great.

I have a social media friend and have no idea how I know him, but he's somehow close to Carl Erskine. Close enough that he called Oisk up after Justin Verlander gave up five runs in Game One to let him know that he's no longer the holder of the All-Time worst World Series ERA with over 30 innings pitched. Turns out that Erskine already knew and despite being almost 94, was happy to get the monkey off his back.

I think it's more that you want the guy at the most difficult position he can play because (a) you don't know what position will be available by the time he reaches the big leagues, and ( it's easier to move a guy from the harder position to the easier one than it is to move him back again.

This is kinda late in the offseason, because Mets Roster Central's 2022 motto is Cleaner Posting Through Database Management, and while we are indeed building a database-driven enterprise, we have found that our self-taught database skills are 20 years out of date and we need to do some catching up. Early looks at the roster as it stands in October are always offputting, as it represents a collection that will look very different by opening day, but this year's crew is particularly so, in that the surfeit of free agent pitchers is such that at least two players are appearing on our projected roster despite not actually being on the 40-player group. It's a team, and looks like a team, although not perphaps a team as formidable as the one made up of the organization's offseason free-agent list. That's problematic, but there is opportunity in restocking. Also notable that, despite the number of unsigned players, the group that remains still doesn't have room for Dom Smith. Tough times for that guy, even if he's largely the author of them. With Terrance Gore, Khalil, Lee and Darin Ruf filling three outfield spots, it's certainly possible that Smith, Baty, or Vientos could join that crew, or join the infield and bump McNeil to the outfield, but as far as Smith goes, a return to the outfield feels less like an opportunity and more like wild speculation about a desperation scenario. I don't get it at all. Is a Mets fan somehow a better Mets fan if he finds a more obscure reason than other fans to hate on the team? Even if that reason makes no sense?

I don't think the Mets' prospects are sow's ears, or why there is any reason to think of them as such, or why there is suddenly any reason to think that their scouts cannot tell silk from pig's flesh. I also don't think posting a job opening for one department suggests that that department has been prioritized over another department. I think this is a false conflict. At any given time, over at LinkedIn, the organization has at least half a dozen job openings. The notion that they may be looking for a head of business analytics doesn't mean that they aren't looking for a rehabilitation specialist, and if they're looking for an associate director of marketing, it doesn't mean they are diverting resources from lefthanded relief pitching. I don't know why it's necessary to make controversy where there isn't any.

I would gather that the pursuit of excellence in performance technology would not hamper the pursuit of excellence in scouting, or vice versa.

Other differences: National League home plate umpies wore their chest protectors under the shirt or jacket, while ALers had the big foam shield. (I might have that backwards, but I don't think so.) One circuit routinely positioned the second-base ump on the infield grass on one knee, just inside the dirt, and the other kept him behind second, near the outfield grass. This may be my prejudice, but the National League ump roster was full of bigger characters with more authority, who were less likely to indulge arguments, tossing the manager and walking away early in a dispute. American league umps were more likely to go jaw to jaw with the managers for a few minutes (as if Billy Martin or Earl Weaver were somehow going to calm down as you heard them out), and these umps wouldn't toss them until a few minutes in after there was a bump or a line-crossing word, which was pretty much always "**********."

Remember when the high strike was the province of the American League and the bottom of the knees belonged to the Senior Circuit?

Free agency at the end of a contract may seem to happen automatically (though an official filing is still required). Exercising an out-clause option in the middle of a contract, though, does not happen automatically.

There's this weird misunderstanding that the text of that interaction perpetuates, suggesting that umps do well because they get 93.8% (or some similar figure) of their calls correct according to computer analysis. But is this an impressive figure? My assumption is that the greater amount of these calls are grossly obvious. If 75% (for the sake of argument) of calls are obvious balls making the catcher dance or right-down-the-pipe strikes for which the catcher doesn't move, then their umperial expertise is only really needed on 25% of the ball-strike calls. Suddenly, that 6.2% that they are missing isn't 6.2 out of 100, but 6.2 out of 25, or 24.8% wrong, and that's not a figure that inspires confidence.

Paul Sewald and Joe Musgrave fooled me. I should've had Musgrave's pitch correct, but I lost my confidence and flipped my call.

One guy I failed to list, who is a candidate for both boots, is Joey Lucchesi.

Lost among discussion on whether the Mets should be renewing their relationship with Edwin Diaz is the reality that he's not the only 2022 reliever not under contract for next season. The team's four relievers with their biggest workloads from 2022 are looking at free agency before heading into 2023. Of the 25 relievers who appeared out of the pen for the the team this past year, those four and five others have expiring contracts, while five more are already gone. Assuming further that Peterson and Megill are needed in the rotation, that brings Nate Fisher (a lefty!) and John Curtiss (his middle name is "Pickens"!) into play. That whole post-season was one or the ages. It's probably my favorite non-Mets World Series. It helps to be 13. Young enough to fully feel it and old enough to fully grasp it.
