If you catch any Mets minor league action this season, catch The Binghamton Rumbel Ponies. They are currently cleaning up the Eastern League with a 60–30 record, 12 games ahead of their nearest division competition. They are currently running out a near-nightly outfield of Carson Benge/Jett Williams/Ryan Clifford (Clifford also plays first some nights), and you don't have to squint to see a future Mets outfield there. All are having terrific seasons and one or two might even be in the majors already if they played in an organization that wasn't hot to contend. Starting pitchers Jack Wenninger, Jonah Tong, Joander Suarez, lefty Zach Thornton, and Jonathan Pintaro have started between 10 and 18 games for the Rumblers and all have ERAs between 1.71 (Tong) and 3.40 (Pintaro). Pintaro stepped in when Nolan McLean blew through the level at 23 years old, and they scarcely missed a beat. Cameron Foster is pitching shutdown ball (1.05 ERA) out of they've even collectively stolen 128 bases, with Williams and Nick Morabito leading the way with 33 and 28, respectively. All of this begs the question of "What does a guy have to do to get drafted?" Sure, the Atlantic Sun Conference ain't the ACC, but it isn't the church leagues, neither. The guy did it all while mostly playing centerfield, and played in three different wood-bat summer leagues — including the Cape Cod League — and smashed the ball there also. Jonah Tong, lest it go un-observed, pitched a perfect inning in this contest. Benge made an out in his only plate appearance. Best names include Red Sox outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia and Brewers infield hopeful Jesús Made.

Yeah, this is something that can appear at any point in one's career or life, but after surgery certainly makes sense. It can frequently be fixed with a chiropractic adjustment, exercise, and PT. I celebrate Diaz, but I'm not going with "Best Pitcher on the Planet."

Certainly there have been a number of second-basement and third-basement drafted in the first round, but they are more typically drafted as shortstops, and move over as the funnel gets tighter. The appeal of Voit, having already forsaken the left side of the infield, appears to be primarily offensive. Antonio Jimenez appears to be a more typical shortstop selection, though he has played all over the field, and his versatility should help him climb. So, cities that host (or at least have their name on) both an MLB franchise and a NASCAR track include: Atlanta (the Braves play in Cobb County and the speedway is in Hampton, but both of them identify with Atlanta, so ...),Cincinnati (Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, KY is purty close, plus Johnny Bench is, like, the NASCAR-iest Hall of Famer there is), Dallas/Ft. Worth/ArlingtonKansas City (the ball team is on the Missouri side and the speedway is on the Kansas side) Las Vegas (the ball team hasn't yet arrived), Miami (the speedway is in Homestead), Phoenix (track is in Avondale). Other kind-of-close-to-MLB-towns-but-not-really NASCAR tracks include Michigan International Speedway (ninety minutes or so from Detroit), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (75 minutes and a state border from Boston), and Sonoma Raceway (an hour on a good-traffic day from San Francisco). That is actually more overlap than I would have guessed, but obviously the two sports have a lot of unexplored room for synergy. It might make some sense to have future events at the home team's nearest track.

Yeah, I expected the seating to be blacked out beyond the outfield, not behind home plate. I also kind of expected the field and the oval to be bisected along the same axis, but I guess the outfield corners would not fit inside the track that way. Dumb question, but why don't speedway stadia have tiers?

Is that jumbotron hanging over the middle a permanent fixture? They probably have to build scaffold towers of 30 stories or more to suspend it.

I guess he was supposed to be a Ferris Buehler type who always lands on his feet or something. But agreed — a big key in retail management in the 90s was to prevent employee theft and make all the employees feel like thieves anyhow, so they would leave before they qualified for any medical benefits. I had a friend who worked in a record store. Any record he wanted, he would drop in the garbage. He would take out the garbage at the end of his shift and walk off with a killing. I think Car Wash was supposed to be a model for the film. The screenwriter supposedly based it on her (I think it was a her) own experiences, but she worked at a Tower, so it kind of makes sense that they miss the indy vibe they are going for.

Coulda been a good film. But I found it to be more than a little unaware of the culture in which it was set. The young actors all seem to be over-playing their roles. I think they took advice from fools. Thank goodness High Fidelity came along.

Cam Tilly hasn't really dominated at Auburn like the terror he was in high school, but hey, it's the SEC, and that's hard. What attracts the Mets, though, are spin rates. Spin rates, spin rates, and spin rates. No word yet if Camden Lohman was named after Camden Yards, but we have our suspicions. He has a Tom Seaver profile in that he attracted no notice as an undersized, slop-throwing junior, but came back after a big growth spurt senior year, with a new high-power profile. So like Tom, he was forced to learn to pitch before he found his heat. Anthony Frobose is our designated local boy pick, if you can call living 10 minutes away from Fman "local." But hey, David Wright has an origin story that involves being from a Mets AAA town, so why not? Tyler McLoughlin is a transfer from Emory, so he made Academic All-Conference over and over. He shares a name with a famed fisherman from National Geographic Channel's Wicked Tuna, but again, we have been unable to find any relation. That doesn't mean we are not going to nickname him "Wicked Tuna" if given half a chance. Wyatt Vincent went about 100 picks lower than projected, but he has already called Missouri State to say "Screw college! I'm gonna be a Met!" Truman Pauley has already set several records in the category of "Most Harvard Name Ever." He in fact comes from several generations of Crimsonians, going back at least to his maternal great grandfather, who played on that same Harvard baseball diamond back in 1937-38. Truman is one of two Mets picks that reportedly throw something akin to a gyroball. Frank Camarillo never really put it all together for the UCSB Gauchos, but he killed in the summer collegiate leagues. James Smith IV, by all reports, is not yet the father of a James Smith V, but I promise you, the pressure he is under is enormous. He is one of several two-way players the Mets have picked, but continually seem to telegraph their intent to keep most all of them on the mound. Dude can play center, though. Conner Ware, you will notice, is the only lefty among the Mets draft picks. He never really cracked LSU's rotation, but they WERE the NCAA champs, so being a bullpen contributor on such a squad ain't nothing, and the Mets see something the numbers don't tell. And hey, any SEC lefty has value when you have hit the 15th round. He started his career in Junior College, so it is pretty sweet to go from there to there to a DI national championship. Zack Mack is 6'5" and 240 and named "Zack Mack," so if he isn't closing games by next April he is failing to live up to his purpose in life. He is not to be confused with popular NPR personality "Zach Mack." Sam Robertson is a Mets draft choice out of a juco, but he started his career with Auburn, and transferring from a top national program like that to a community college is ... well, let's just say there must be a story there. Dillon Stiltner went to one of those Christian Schools where you enter at three-years-old Pre-K and spend your entire life in the same institution until senior year of high school. Can you imagine how awesome graduation feels for Dillon Stiltner? Joe Scarborough was a big catching prospect out of high school, but he has apparently moved to the mound, and he is not here for your Mika Brzezinski jokes. Garrett Stratton (no known relation to Rob) is a Jesuit-educated big-brained scholar type who also prospered on the hardwood but apparently stuck to baseball when he reached his junior year. Got that Orel Hershiser look where you know those big ears just made him that much more driven.

I understand, but if you look at as a Susan Seidelman movie that Madonna appears in, instead of as a Madonna vehicle, it may warrant a different level of consideration.
