    So, how mad it is that they took their first-round pick and went for a player described as a "fourth-year sophomore" with only 14 innings under his belt? No summer league experience either. They are seemingly trying to steal something here. Conservative picks can wash out as well, certainly, but this seems like a moonshot.

    As mentioned in the previous dead thread, he had been dealing with Parkinson's Disease for probably more than a decade. It is fair to ask whether his style of play was a factor in that. He was a steal when they got him for cash from the Braves, but beaten out for RoY by Pete Rose. Rose got 17 out of 20 votes but they were pretty much a dead heat statistically. My vote would probably have been for Ray Culp. Led the league in getting plunked seven straight years. Also (and possibly relatedly), by some accounts, predicted the latter-day coming of Jeff McNeil as a member of the Baseball Profanity Hall of Fame.

    Davey Johnson didn't use PCs in the dugout. He brought data with him into the dugout, and had written on index cards that Rusty Staub (for example) was 1-for-10 against a certain pitcher, but that's a different thing.

    There seems to be something intriguing going on with 18th-round pick Marcus Ward. All the scouting reports I have been able to find list him as an outfield draft prospect. The Mets, though, have him labeled as a pitcher, even though very few reports mention that he pitches as well, and those that do, only mention it as an afterthought. So either that's a clerical error or the Mets are seeing mystery talent.

    Don't agree with pulling Scott, but, you know, Harper is Harper. Don't agree with pulling Raley. And if this is all a setup to get Williams out there in the ninth, I don't agree with that either.

    The bottom of the order got sick of loading the bases and getting stranded, so they said, "Eff you guys at the top of the order — we're gonna hit a bunch of solo homers."

    The first half of the Mets draft seems to be very much concentrated among the four big-time conferences of the SEC, ACC, Big 10, and Pac 10 12, particularly the SEC. Three of the picks came out of The University of Arkansas alone.

    The second-place Phils are winners of five of their last 10, still improbably sitting at 11 games over .500 with a run differential of -10. Yesterday's news has reliever Brad Keller diagnosed with a torn UCL, which will unsurprisingly cause him to miss the rest of the year. It was the first of a two-year contract with Keller. He has spent most of his career with the Royals, and 2025 with the Cubs, but since he had a German surname, the pull of gravity between him and the Phils was strong. Lefty reliever Tanner Banks hit the injured list recently as well, but he was pitching pretty poorly, and the assignment allowed them to bring back Chase Shugart, about whose surname I will say nothing, as to continue on in this manner would be frankly distasteful. In the only game on the schedule, Aaron Nola goes tonight against the Scottish Christian, tomorrow they amazingly get their second Friday off in a few weeks, Saturday locks up veteran lefties Sean Manea and Jesus Luzardo, and Sunday gives us the thrill of Nolan McLean against Alan "Don't Call Me Charles" Rangel, still looking for his first MLB win.

    Go may be just at the margins of the big leagues, but he's part of a big-time family act. His wife is Lee Ga-hyun, sister of Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee, and daughter of Lee Jong-beom, KBO legend (MVP, six Gold Gloves, 13 All-Star games, four KBO championships) who was blessed with one of the all-time great nicknames — Son of the Wind. This makes Go the Grandson-in-Law of the Wind.

    For whatever it's worth, a guy officially becomes a free agent one day after the close of the World Series. And even then, he isn't free to talk with any other teams for five days.

    I'm not sure why it's an all-in/all-out discussion on Baty and Vientos right now. Baty is having an awful year, but I'm not about to advocate for more Zack Short instead. I'd love to see what AJ Ewing can do on the infield, some, but I'm in the minority there. Presumably, if and when Marcus Semien gets back, Baty will have to scratch for playing time, unless/until Bo Bichette gets dealt. Do I think his failure is due in a small, medium, or large part to being ill-served by organizational philosophy? Totally.

    Going straight from Pittsburgh to the Yanxxx is just so on-brand for both organizations that I just mentally glossed over that Houston ever happened, even though (1) he was amazing, and (2) he started two games in the World Series, and won one of them.

    I thought of him, but until now, had completely blanked on his Houston tenure — and his name is Gerritt Cole.

    In fairness, that was not his only defensive or baserunning blunder, nor his only exhibition of lack of hustle.
