  1. =Centerfield post_id=171879 time=1727378822 user_id=65] Chris Sale will actually be on extra rest.
  2. This is the closest that can be gleaned from all the public commenting and insiders reports regarding who will be starters for the Mets and Braves (and Brewers) going forward. Obviously, this is a snapshot that is subject to change — change that can come from day to day or hour to hour. One advantage the Mets have is that they are not trying to aggressively hide the #5 spot in the rotation, so if it comes down to the last game, it looks likely that the Braves will be looking to Chris Sale on short rest. If this is the sequence for the Mets, on the other hand, they should be well rested all around, with Sean Manea ready to go in any playoff opener. 3. Earlier in the week, Colton Cowser, in hot pursuit of a fly ball down the line, in the heat of a playoff chase, went smashing into the protective netting, and then checked to make sure he didn't wake the baby.
  4. Huzzah! One from each league! Or zero! The high-stakes baseball being played right now would be insane!!
  5. Somewhere in the MLB offices, there was somebody who foresaw all of this, hinted the notion that maybe — since the Mets and Braves both had Monday off — they should start that series a day early. He or she was shut down before finishing the first sentence, and never spoke up again.

  7. I guess the Braves will be forced to use Sale and Fried against the Royals. If the double-header comes to pass, then it looks likely that we'll get Schwelly and either Grant Holmes or Charlie Morton. Just still gotta TCB. Seriously.
  8. Bad news for the fans who made the trip.
  9. Wow. Get outta Dodge.
  10. The real question for me is how much Lindor we're getting — 75%? 80%? Maybe Mendoza is bluffing, putting Lindor's name into a lineup of a game he expects to be postponed.
  11. cal sharpie wrote: JD is DH. And Lindor shorty! And Acuña benchy!
  12. Two other options include benching Iglesias, whose workload Mendoza was careful to manage through most of the season, but has been ridden hard since Lindor went down, and benching Nimmo against the lefty, deploying Acuña in left. Both those scenarios mostly depend on Lindor being able to start at shortstop, of course, which still seems pretty unlikely.
  13. The Mets have announced their intent to use José Quintana to open the Milwaukee series. The Brewers are mum thus far. The Giants are throwing a thus-far-unimpressive rookie Mason Black at the Diamondbacks, so that's one more reason for squeaks. Bad-assed name, though. Severino is on schedule to go again in Game #162, but I hope he has volunteered for bullpen duty before then if so needed. It's all-hands-on-deck time. 14. You're knocking down an argument nobody is making. I doubt salary bonuses or vesting options can even be fixed to the number of saves a player gets.
  15. I also remember Pedro Astacio having a great first half and falling apart in the second half. Despite start after start being of the three-innings-six-runs variety, Bobby Valentine kept sending him out there until he reached enough innings to trigger the vesting clause that would guarantee him a second season under contract with the team, shortly after which, he finally admitted he was hurt.
  16. Yeah, you're undoubtedly right, and I'm undoubtedly exaggerating. If the complaint comes to a hearing, it'll likely be be litigated by lawyers already on retainer and adjudicated by an independent arbitrator. While the niggling amount of money may or may not be less than the expense, it's largely an expense that's already been paid anyhow. And I'll guess that either by agreement or arbitrator's decision, the Pirates will end up paying half.
  17. Pirates release Rowdy Tellez, four plate appearances short of triggering a $200K contract bonus. The lawsuits that ensue will undoubtedly cost both sides more than $200K in legal fees.
  18. Swept Washington out of the gate despite deploying Megill as a last-minute emergency Opening Day starter.
  19. I knew about Brett and Schmidt being taken with consecutive picks. I have a theory that culture and evolution tend to conspire to produce great players at the same position at the same time. Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker. Walter Johnson and Christy Matthewson. Lou Gehrig and Jimmy Foxx. Willie/Mickey/The Duke, Henderson/Raines, the Super Shortstops, etc. I like that Hillsborough High was already producing big-leaguers in 1971. Rich Puig always looked to me like he was worried that some awful secret was going to get out. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkZ7ntWcJXkZT8epHNRNgTIvTRGaQE_DFjzT0sOrt8b4GRhs0sLYb7n2x6aHr1oFsPMP57zWIfjXvrusH1YcCH_hR6QltcYcRqHsk2r2X_mh3VOjnzmFpumArkWTuXZZD5HdjW4RpUn6Zp/s1600/puig.jpg>

  23. I was thinking that, if there was going to be a pinch-hit appearance for Lindor, jumping in there for Marte might have been the opening. Certainly might have been tempting if Nimmo had reached.
  24. Hey, Gary, if you leave the booth now and hustle down to the clubhouse, maybe Spencer Schwellenbach will give you an autograph.
  25. Joe Jiménez is no Al Hrobosky.
