  1. Well, he's 22 years younger and presumably in far superior condition otherwise, so all other things being equal, I'd bet on the Kid.
  2. Wally Backman. Mark Johnson.
  3. Esther Williams, too? Save a star for the rest of them, Ralph!
  4. That was clear to me from the beginning. I mean, I have a dim (useful anyhow) awareness of the Royal lineage, at least in teh American era. But the peripheral characters --- Lord this and Duke of that --- I'm not particularly curious about. But to associate Ms. Bonham Carter with the funny little sub-five-footer who lived to be 101 and seemed pretty thoroughly pickled to the end (no particular insult intended here, I could be wrong) was a startling realization. My thinking was probably along the line of "Wait a minute, she's not just a random person here... she's Elizabeth's mother... which makes her... HOLY CRAP!" Strangest picture to come up on a search for "young queen mum":
  5. Oops. Fixed my linkie.
  6. Funny to see Sheets atop the Brewers list. The Brews have had a lot of good pitchers who just couldn't last: Caldwell, Higuera, and D'Amico come to mind. Vuckovich too, I guess.
  7. Trivia: Who are the only MLB players to appear in at least 250 games for both the Mets and the Pirates? The 250 club 1. Frank Taveras (JCL) 2. Frank Thomas - The Charter Member (Edgy) 3. Donn Clendenon (Edgy) 4. Tim Foli (Edgy) 5. Joe Orsulak (Edgy) 6. John Milner (Edgy) 7. Lee Mazzilli (Edgy) It's a three run-homer for Edgy. I didn't think anybody would get Orsulak. I checked my answers after submitting them, and I thought they were all wrong, if only just. Joe Orsulak: 274 hits with the Mets; 238 with the Pirates. John Milner: 586 hits with the Mets; 248 with the Pirates. Lee Mazzilli: 796 hits with the Mets; 176 with the Pirates. Then I realized we were talking about games and not hits.
  8. Kirk is day-to-day, recovering from the system shock of this heroic effort.
  9. This guy reports that one of the prospects the Mets might be looking at come deadline time is Tigers reliever Chance Ruffin. Though a Chance Ruffin/Dock Doyle battery would be awesome. And after the game, they would investigate crimes in the 1920s.
  10. I'm thinking firstbaseman/oufielder-type thoughts: [list:2cgcb9wz][*:2cgcb9wz]Joe Orsulak[/*:m:2cgcb9wz] [*:2cgcb9wz]John Milner[/*:m:2cgcb9wz] [*:2cgcb9wz]Lee Mazzilli[/*:m:2cgcb9wz][/list:u:2cgcb9wz]
  11. How many guys are left? I'll go with Clendennon and Foli.
  12. Frank Thomas.
  13. Ichiro, by the way, pretty bad this year, tied up for one more season, and making more dough than Jason Bay.
  14. I guess I'm Wet Blanket Willie, but Disney-era Muppetry* seems to taste kinda like they've substituted a key ingredient. *Shrunken in case some maniac reads my post before getting to the trailer's payoff.
  15. Caught them two weeks ago vs. the Nats. They were platooning all over the field. Matt Diaz was batting .100 and batting cleanup! Six weeks into the season! When the Nats pulled their lefty starter for a righty reliever, they pretty much emptied the bench by the seventh to regain the platoon advantage. Their pen looked shallow also. Get to them early if you can. Ronny Paulino is an ex-Bucco. They trade a lot with the Nats. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has earned $260.4 million in overseas markets.
  16. Lunchy, how about grilling us up a Pirates preview?
  17. One of those films that I was sure had a thread but I can't find it. Colin Firth is the Duke of York, bearing the weight of the world as his father is declining, his crown prince brother is derided by all parties as inadequate for the throne, a catastrophic war is looming for the British Empire, and he himself is sidled with a crippling stammer that makes the prospect of a public life --- let alone one leading his nation in war --- terrifying. Geoffrey Rush is his speech therapist. Helena Bonham-Carter is his kind wife, who I suddenly realized 3/4 of the way through the picture was the Queen Mum herself.
  18. Willie McGee, StL. Pete Rose, CIN. Davey Lopes, LAD. Joe Morgan, CIN. Rickey Henderson, OAK
  19. Twenty-eight games with the Mets, and he wore three numbers.
  20. Actual conversation with my father after the Mets fell behind two games to none in 1986. Dad: So, Edgy, are the Mets going to be able to come back? Edgy: If we can get two homers out of Carter today, they will.
  21. Bad news. But that exclamation point at the end made the smile. His daughter is clearly cut from the Carter cloth.

That story was less of a piece on the new guy as much as it is another batch of gloom and doom, and you can almost hear Klap cackling and rubbing his hands in glee as he types. See, I think he believes what he writes. Even when the evidence selling his point contridicts the evidence selling another point. Darryl Strawberry is the jerk who the Mets let undermine them and the golden goose the Mets let get away, depending on his angle at the target that day.
  23. My wife has oft compared Kong76 to Sam.
  24. Today, Klap is believed to be a jerk.
