  1. I was kinda hoping Sean might take his broken face to the AFL. I'll be watching for him in the winter leagues, but man, a random line drive in the face in spring training leads to no season whatsoever. Got to get my man back on the horse.
  2. DHing keeps you healthy. Robin Yount hit .331 in 1982, one point behind Willie Wilson. Cecil Cooper hit .352 in 1980 --- an amazing number that he elected to put up the year George Brett hit .390. Also good for second. I'm guessing the Wallbangers didn't like Whitey's Royals.
  3. I'm honestly not sure if I've ever heard of Taylor Whitendon. Almost sounds like a fake baseball name. Good fake baseball names: Shane Van Meyerhoffer Diego Rijos Cory Outlander Shawn Emory
  4. Havens was a safe bet. Some good picks there. I think they usually sent six --- three pitchers and three hitters. Zack Wheeler? Eric Goeddel?
  5. Thank Heaven for extra innings.
  6. Wayward son Joe Smith is ripping the American League apart as a righthanded specialist --- compiling a 1.72 ERA over 61 games and 57 2/3 innings. He's given up one homer in that time, a gamewinner to Jacoby Ellsbury on August 3.
  7. A 2-5 afternoon gets Ryan Braun from .33403361344537815126050420168067 to .33471933471933471933471933471933.

Are we going to discuss this like adults or are you going to revert to your snotty sarcasm? I didn't give that to you and I don't deserve it from you. You know, I know you don't think much of me, but I've tried to engage you from a half dozen angles and you still attack. And I guess you think it's weak of me to keep asking you to cut it out. But I'm the moderator here and I don't think it's too much to ask you to disagree with people with a little more moderation in your tone.
  9. Tim Kurkijian wrote: I am 5-foot-5. This is relevant for one reason: On Wednesday, I stood next to Danny Herrera. He is 1 inch taller than I. And he is a good relief pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds.
  10. Despite debuting in black, if he died tomorrow (God forbid), he will have already left this beautiful image behind:
  11. batmagadanleadoff wrote: It's also possible that the Mets cut ties with Einhorn from a newly found position of strength, as some believe, but I don't believe that just because the Mets say so, or imply so. I don't think they said so or implied so. batmagadanleadoff wrote: If you'll remember, over the past four, five six weeks, both the Mets and Bud Selig were reporting that the closing of the Einhorn deal was a simple formality and that the delays in completing that now ill-fated deal were neither material nor unusual. I don't remember. batmagadanleadoff wrote: For all I know, the Mets might have moved on because Einhorn was insisting on terms that would increase his likelihood of one day, acquiring majority control of the franchise. Perhaps the Mets want less demanding investors. Which is consistent with the notion that Picard having less leverage over the Wilpons gives them more leverage in protecting their assets.
  12. I find it interesting that Krauthammer, as a paraplegic and an MD, is fascinated by the biomechanics of great defensive plays. Never knew until I read this piece that he was a fan, however.
  13. Charles Krauthammer, recent convert. Jayson Werth is hitting like .321 (if I remember correctly, and I'm certain I don't) since dumping his walkup music (Kanye West's "Stronger", Metallica's "Wherever I May Roam," and Sammy Hagar's "Heavy Metal") for... nothing. As the obnoxious DJ-ing is more egregious at Nationals Stadium than most big league parks, I can only salute him for the blessed silence.
  14. I'm working from the idea that Picard having less leverage over the Wilpons gives them more leverage in protecting their assets.

But when he's healthy, as he's been lately, Havens still has the potential to be an above-average offensive second baseman. He draws some walks, has some pop in his bat and can hit for average. If healthy, he could be in the mix for the Mets' second base job in 2012, but the "if healthy" caveat applies more to him than almost anybody else. The implied exception in that "almost" being Fernando Martinez.
  16. He's doing great, but (1) you may want to subtract an A there (he's in Bingo), and ( it wouldn't kill him to take an occasional pitch.
  17. Good for Darryl. Hell, great fro Darryl. But that headline confuses, o Supermarket News. You've got to read deeply to understand that "Darryl Strawberry Helps Open Food Desert Store" means he's helping provide a desert oasis and not actually growing the desert or something.
  18. Amazin' he's still a free man.
  19. I like to coin a bullshit word on the 24th of every month --- letting on like: "Oh, you don't know that word? I thought everybody did."
  20. 1) Yes, we have what we have, but in reviewing Vic's post as we were, I thought retrocrit was OK. 2) No, I don't really blame the Wilpons, but I thought the schemings of the city were on that retrocrit table as well.
  21. Yeah, I agree with most all of Vic's points too. I still don't care much about the wall distances. I think it's a pointless distraction for all and they could be in Connecticut for all I care. But manufactured quirkiness stinks of falseness, and for all the tiresomeness of the batmagadan's chasing Jeff Wilpon up a tree, it's disappointingly true that Jeff doesn't get this. Mostly I think that where there's a wall, it should be climbable. This almost should be an article in the Fan Bill of Rights. It's just about the most exciting play in baseball, and even if it only happens once a decade, it's physical impossibility dampens any and every game just a little. I break with LWFS on the indictment of the neighborhood. Its condition and neglect were, in their own way, falsely engineered by the city as well. With just the standard taxpayer treatment over the decades --- drainage/sewer and other municipal services, paving the potholes, enforcing parking codes, the neighborhood would have had a chance to develop into something that complemented the stadium. I'm a free market guy in this regard, and I think indy league teams should sue the Hell out of American cities for the exclusive nonsense the give to major league teams.
  22. Wilpll somebody please put my eeys back in my sockets?

  24. And as Prior first experienced arm problems in 2004 (actually almost every injury has been to the shoulder), he's not really the latest example of anything.
  25. They have a winning percentage .106 lower at home than on the road. Of course, last year their home winning percentage was .185 better. Maybe it's just a thing.
