Seriously, though, shelters have pets too, you can take one home for about $50 to cover the cost of shots and fees. "That's what Mommy says we'll do the next time you get sick, Daddy."
  2. Great stuff. Here's a money quote on Grant if ever I saw one. His reputation at Fahenstock, one co-worker told the New York Times, was for austerity and trust. He runs a tight ship at Fahenstock. He keeps his costs down. Hes been smart this way. He gets the most he can out of his old equipment, and he pays the young guys the least he can get away with. I hope you got some laughs on that one. M. Donald and Alice Waters Grant were married 66 years.

  4. Maybe not on you. Maybe on me. Good luck with zoological care.
  5. Bastardo's pitched both of the first two games --- 47 pitches in all --- so hopefully Lee burns up his 80 pitches early and gives the Mets a good crack at the softer underbelly of the Philly pen.
  6. I actually went out last night around the fifth inning, feeling reasonably confident that the fate of the game was in good hands. I came home from my 9:30 showing of The Avengers fulling expecting to see a victorious score displayed on my desktop computer, and I did. I'd love to gloat. While folks were snarking about the "Mehts" this preseason, I was growing in confidence that this was a darn good team getting better. (The Avengers, on the other hand, I found to be "Meh.") I'd love to gloat, but I know fully well about other shoes, and if fortunes don't turn soon for the Mets, they undoubtedly are preparing to do so in some other corner of my existence. (I have other corners.) So I'm trying to keep it cool here. Trying. But I'm consumed by urges to high-five folks through computer screens.
  7. Far and Away certainly shares a few traits --- tasteful, lovely, horrible. Only that one I could smell from outside the theater and stayed away. This one, I merely should have smelled. And, of course, this one was allegedly a comedy.

Doesn't really matter who's first. Having four guys like that on track is fine by me. Sort of the main reason I think the Mets gain an advantage as the season progresses. Greater chance that somebody emerges.
  9. Did a great job tonight. Did you see how warm that bench looked?
  10. Nieuwenhuis 2.72 Duda 1.45 Acosta 1.31 Wright 1.25 Torres 0.80 Ramirez 0.76 Baxter 0.74 Byrdak 0.50 Rauch 0.47
  11. We's on the board and the tying run is at the plate. And his name is Ike Davis.
  12. Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubles to get the Mets in the hit column.
  13. And letting Batista bat won't help that cause too much.
  14. First things first. We want a hit.
  15. Don't worry too much about the errata. One of those is Batista's.
  16. Hunter Pence comes to the plate to the tune of "Danger Zone"? Really? Time to become a full-time crappy DJ.

    Who's #1?

Forbes magazines sez it's Mr. Met. State lawmakers agree. Mr. Met Honored By State Senate Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on May 08, 2012 The state Senate this afternoon passed a resolution honoring Mr. Met for being named the top sports mascot. The ranking was made last week by the The Davie Brown Celebrity Index. Unfortunately, Mr. Met was not in the Senate gallery to receive his honoralthough he would have undoubtedly got the crowd hopping. Maybe hell come in the off season. Heres the resolution, which in part reads, he is a man with a large baseball for a head and can be seen at Citi Field during Mets home games. LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Mr. Met, the New York Mets iconic mascot, upon the occasion of being rated No. 1 in Major League Baseball WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to those who excel in bringing cheer to baseball fans, young and old alike, distinguishing themselves through notable achievements and representing the great Empire State with pride and determination; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu late Mr. Met, the New York Mets iconic mascot, upon the occasion of being rated No. 1 in Major League Baseball; WHEREAS, Mr. Met is the official mascot of Major League Baseballs New York Mets; he is a man with a large baseball for a head and can be seen at Citi Field during Mets home games; and WHEREAS, Mr. Met has appeared in several commercials as part of ESPNs This is SportsCenter campaign, and has been elected into the Mascot Hall of Fame; on April 30, 2012, FORBES magazine listed Mr. Met as the No. 1 mascot; he was chosen as the nations No. 1 sports mascot based on his likeability, familiarity and several other factors; and WHEREAS, Mr. Met was first introduced on the cover of game programs, yearbooks, and on scorecards in 1963, when the Mets were still playing at the Polo Grounds in northern Manhattan; when the Mets moved to Shea Stadium in 1964, fans were introduced to a live costumed version; Mr. Met is believed to have been the first mascot in Major League Baseball to exist in human form; and WHEREAS, Mr. Met has become the true symbol for mascots in Major Leag ue Baseball; his legacy stands as a sterling example for all mascots in professional and collegiate athletics; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Mr. Met, the New York Mets iconic mascot, upon the occasion of being rated No. 1 in Major League Baseball; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the New York Mets Baseball organization.
  18. Pete Orr puts them up 3-0. Pete Orr? C'mon, you Mets.
  19. Radio guys weren't talking about Niewenhuis' footspeed, but more about his wall-shyness.
  20. And Pence puts the Phils up.
  21. Mets scratch a walk in the first. Why can't we hit this guy?
  22. Lewin recites Batista's failures to date and then: You root for a guy like Miguel Batista. He writes novels and poetry. He paints and has a picture of Albert Einstein in his locker. He may be the exact 180-degree opposite of Guillermo Mota.
  23. Yeah, two gloves and nobody really gets them out, and the guy curls up like a puppy. Either that happened too fast to react or that was a whole section of disengaged folks.
  24. Consider us so advised.
  25.
