  1. Astros blasting the Yankees 9-1 right now. Welcome the AL, boys.
  2. Byrd about a half day behind that fastball for strike three.
  3. Valdy gets the old seven-foot single.
  4. Zvon wrote: Fernandez batted for himself and yet is outta the game for the top of the 5th. Hmmm. Short bench for Miami tonight.
  5. Buck! Shit, that was a good pitch!
  6. Zvon wrote: Edgy MD wrote: It's sometimes hard to stay focused in a mausoleum of a stadium. Fun at-bat against Fernandez, though. If eight pitches to get a pitcher out is fun for Matt, then yes. Fun for fans. All eight of them.
  7. "Jose Fernandez escaped Cuba amid a hail of gunfire. It was his fourth attempt. He saved his mother who fell into the ocean." How much of that are you wont to believe?
  8. It's sometimes hard to stay focused in a mausoleum of a stadium. Fun at-bat against Fernandez, though.
  9. Marlns broadcaster on Harvey: "I've been doing some reading and a lot of scouts describe his slider as Carlton-esque." I'm saying boo... but who compares a righthander to a lefthander, especially with regard to breaking pitches? "I've been talking to the Mets management about Harvey and what they speak about isn't what kind of pitcher he is, but what kind of person he is. Hard worker. Great teammate... ." Wow! Nobody used the word "douchey"? Seriously, though, he's struck out three of the last four and almost looks bored out there.
  10. That's a bad offense. It's like the mean player is a backup catcher. It's a a team full of Charlie O'Brien.
  11. Joe Smith pitching like a hunk. No runs in eight innings pitched over nine games. Four hits, nine K's, and no walks. Eckerslenian. Wasted on Cleveland. But we'll always have Jason Vargas, right?
  12. He was a phenomenon in Japan. I think he rapped.
  13. "I can't be compelled to read it because, well, frankly, why read? I mean... outside of menus, what's the point?" What a lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy man.
  14. Hey, here we go, starting at about 1:05: [youtube:1q1e05nv]0A3hmASpDqg[/youtube:1q1e05nv]
  15. I thought I remember Howie, and I was going to answer that, but as an out-of-towner, I can scarcely recall his tenure as a Mets TV guy. Just seems so counter-intuitive to me that I didn't trust my own answer.
  16. A Phillie phan phriend just wrote to ask me who called the September 21 game and specifically the Piazza homer, and I'm drawing a blank. He sent me a link, but I'm blocked at work. I don't watch and SNY and so I haven't seen it 100 times as I imagine some of you have. I think remember about 60 seconds of booth silence to soak it all in and then Fran Healy coming on, but who was on play-by-play calling the homer as it happened?
  17. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: So, like, a double every three days and not much else, then? Well, a double every 2.2 days, plus a triple every 11, and a homer every 22. Plus 1.23 singles per game, plus 0.54 walks. He's getting it done, which is in direct contrast to his punchless spring training. He's 11th in the PCL in RBI.
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Send Cowgill down, call up Downtown Andrew Brown and have him breath down Byrd's back. We have to get better if even a little. I can get behind this. I think they even have a spot on the 40-man since the jettisoning of Laffey. Brown is somehow going .357 / .440 / .560 // 1.000 despite having only one homer. He has ten doubles!
  19. Seriously though, tagging a guy as gay on his hairstyle or mannerisms is a little too fourth grade for me to take seriously.
  20. The Mets host an All Star game this year at Citi Field. The Yankees hosted an All Star Game a scant five years ago in Yankee Stadium II. Going back to the late eighties era you describe as one in which the 1977 All Star Game at Yankee Stadium II was a factor against the Mets, the Athletics hosted at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum three years after the Giants hosted at Candlestick. Not the same city but the same marketplace. The Cubs hosted at Wrigley Field in 1990 seven years after the White Sox hosted at Comiskey.
  21. I hope he finishes the season, because that would suggest he won't have done terribly poorly. I guess that means I hope he gets an extension, because that would suggest he will have done rather well.
  22. Who do I have in mind as an audience or a culprit? As an audience, any correspondent here or elsewhere who is disportionately inclined to blame the Wilpons for slights real or imagined. As culprits, all of the Mets ownership team and the high level executives who advised them. OE: I hadn't realized the recent use of a park that is home to another team in the same town was a factor in who gets an All-Star Game. It apparently isn't much of one anymore.
  23. And I never said you said she said she said, or so Edward Said said. It seemed worth underscoring.
  24. All that's true, but again, it's never been a secret that the team was disinterested in pursuing the All Star Game. And if that's something that disappointed/disappoints you, the responsibility is hardly limited to the Wilpons alone.
