  1. Who'da thought after all he's been through (put himself through) that Dwight Gooden would be this sharp? He's welcome to sit in the booth on Ronnie's days off anytime, from my perspective. (Caveat: Anytime... he's not high.)
  2. I don't know who this Brignac guy is, but it really shows you something to see a Yankee make that play without the extraneous jump.
  3. Uno-dos-tres. Let's jump all over Kuroda now.
  4. Mariano: cheers from 1/3 of the crowd; boos from about 1/6; indifference from 1/2. John Franco: cheers from about 4/5! That says something about the distastefulness fans feel about saluting Rivera when they go nuts for Franco. Wearing the "C" on his jersey, too. Was that an actual lefthanded catcher's mitt or was it a firstbaseman's mitt?
  5. Darryl has a vicious month. Baby-faced teammates appreciate it. Programmed synth music sounds horrible. [youtube:1bd5vxbq]ClsAOhhUKz0[/youtube:1bd5vxbq]
  6. Wow, I'm pretty sure the other "random" fan is Rhea Pearlman.
  7. Rain Delay Theater: Gary Carter's Game-Winning Hit off of Charlie Kerfeld to Take Game Five of the 1986 NLCS [youtube:1hnw8at0]7ozua4K01I8[/youtube:1hnw8at0] Coupla closeups on random fans, including one guy at 0:45 that looks like Jerry Stiller.
  8. Or that it come in the midst of 59-win Yankee season while the Mets are storming over the horizon.
  9. So, why was it no problem for me to have a charitable attitude toward saluting Chipper Jones? Craig Biggio, thanks for the memories. You were a most worthy opponent. But a brief salute to the career of Mariano Rivera feels like passing an emotional kidney stone.
  10. Man, look at those legendary names: Merkle, Speaker, Snograss, and the doomed Chick Stahl. That looks to be game two of the 1912 World Series, played to an 11-inning tie. DAMN YOU, BUD SELIG! (Actually one of the most exciting World Series ever.)
  11. The Capts got class. GIF: A nice moment, David Wright hugs a young Mets fan after the Mets win against the Yankees. Shout out thnx to MetsKevin11 for the .gif Twitters saying this was Wright pulling a Ryan Howard, pulling a Babe Ruth. The kid (so sez the Twittery source, which is what it is) asked Wright to hit a homerun, Wright said he'd try, and KABOOM! Life is good if you can get them front-row seats. But dang, give him the hat, David.
  12. Maybe that standing O on his RBI single the other night should have been Terry's cue to get him out on a positive and send him down after the game --- or better yet, remove him for a pinch-runner and send him down immediately.
  13. Currently: .313 / .397 / .473 // .871. Can't not want to sign up for that. From your secondbaseman, firstbaseman... anybody.
  14. Calling mock drafts is like picking the next 30 presidents --- everything that happens re-writes what will follow, so the plausability of correctly picking each successive pick rapidly deteriorates with each proceeding one. Would love to see Nate Silver take a crack at it, though.
  15. That GotI is an unimpeachable source. [list:xi10d3k6][*:xi10d3k6]Austin Meadows[/*:m:xi10d3k6] [*:xi10d3k6]DJ Peterson[/*:m:xi10d3k6] [*:xi10d3k6]Hunter Renfrow[/*:m:xi10d3k6] [*:xi10d3k6]Reese McGuire[/*:m:xi10d3k6][/list:u:xi10d3k6] All I know is that whoever the Mets pick, he's spending a piece o' that bonus money on one badassed truck.
  16. It is to Andy Martino and his editor, apparently. The guy can either hide from the media or give obscure answers to a scenario that could play out any number of ways. He's not going to tip his hand. Making news out of ambiguous quotes is somebody else's job. I'm not the one who ran with the story, though.
  17. He didn't say anything except that if the right deal is available he would pursue it. If it's not there, it's not there. Nobody needs an excuse.
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: This would be the kind of year to add a Keith Hernandez at the deadline. Or on June 15, which should be called the Keithline. Seriously, though, Sandy couldn't have minced his words more, so I won't conclude one thing or another, or feel lied to if it doesn't break the way I want it to. But I imagine this non-statement should trigger about a thousand words from Megdal.
  19. I watched about 24 minutes of Cloud Atlas, and I wanted to call up Jonathan Demme and blame him for taking Tom Hanks out of funny films.
  20. In MLB play, Mets 2, Yankees 1 In the Pacific Coast League, Las Vegas 9, Salt Lake 7. Three hits came from Omar Quintanilla, who is hitting .331 in 45 games. Maybe even a bigger surprise is latebloomer Francisco Pena, who went 2-3 with both of his hits leaving the yard. He's been a Buckmonster since joining AAA, going .385 / .407 / .885 // 1.292 in eight games since his callup to AAA. In the Eastern League, B-Mets 6, Portland 5. The Bees scored twice in the fifth and once in every inning htereafter to take it in walkoff style, as Josh Rodriguez came home on a wild pitch in the ninth. Alan Dykstra had three hits, including two doubles and a homer. In the Florida State League... nobody played. In the South Atlantic League, Savannah 4, Greenville 1. Gabriel Ynoa goes eight, striking out six and walking nobody.
  21. Keith being Keith. Cliche, but apt, I think. He's like the flipside of Gary Carter. Carter could be unself-aware. Keith can sometimes be unaware of anybody else.
  22. Eh, it's a common enough metaphor. Sensitive? Not really, but I it would suck to decide after decades of common usage, to decide that 300 millonth user of the expression is suddenly the jerk.
  23. I don't know if it's happened yet in 2013, or even if we know when it does, as it's unclear whether the Phillies, Nationals, or Braves are the division's giant-that-must-be-slain. But it sure as snot happened tonight. New York (N) 2, NYN (A) 1 Ding! Ding! That's two, but did the Mets make ground on the first place team? Toronto, 9, Atlanta 3 Ding! Three! Did they make ground on the second place squad? Baltimore 6, Washington 2 Ding! Dare I ask... how about third-place? Boston 9, Philadelphia 3 Ding! Plus all those third-place teams beating our divisional opponents, means they gain on the Yankees. How about those terrible last-place Malins? Tampa Bay 10, Miami 3. Ding! Ding! So, the Mets gain a net of four full games in their division. The Yankees lose a net of four games. You can't go to bed with better. I feel triple happy and then some.
  24. Sheesh, two hands, Tejada.
