  1. In other news, another hit for Quintanilla.

  3. Dan Haren can pitch for my opponents anytime.
  4. Josh Lewin coming in with some serious Abbot & Costello trivia.
  5. Recker threatens my marriage. Is that enough?
  6. Adam Rubin wrote a lustful blog post about Rainy. He doesn't have high heat --- his blazer comes between 89-92, and occasionally gets up to 93, but his hard stuff all sinks and at 21 he has time to add a mile or two maybe. He's been moved up to St. Loo where his first start was typical but for a few unearned runs and fewer strikeouts but... 8.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO. That's the stuff, you know? Combined over two levels, he's 4-2, wit a 1.38 ERA in 58 2/3 innings, with 55 strikeouts, six walks, ONE homer allowed. It's great to pick a guy out because he sounds like a sad pretty emo girl and have him turn out to be the goods.
  7. That first statement was meant to be "It wasn't unforeseeable," right?
  8. A lot of saturated ink went into 1975.
  9. Opened the season penciled in as the everyday rightfielder. Wonder what happened? Trouble with Torre? Pissed that the team cut Bobby Valentine? Awkwardness of dressing next to a guy whose ancestors may have been owned by yours? He didn't arrive on the team until March 15, to complete the mammoth blockbuster Milner/Montaez/Devine/Boggs/Miller/PtBNL/Grieve/Blyleven/Oliver/Norman/Matlack deal (he the PtBNL). That he came so late may suggest the team was never so committed to him as all that. Texas grieved so much after losing Grieve they went and got him back to never ever let him go. I'm Googling... All I'm able to find out was that he was on the DL at the time of the trade after crashing into the fence and spraining a toe. Possible conclusions: [list:2pgroulo][*:2pgroulo]The Mets thought him too soft.[/*:m:2pgroulo] [*:2pgroulo]The Mets were growing deeply enamored of Elliott Maddox/Bruce Boisclair/Joel Youngblood while Henderson was healing.[/*:m:2pgroulo] [*:2pgroulo]They really really thought they needed relief pitching, and Henderson was rather indistinguishable from their other options in right.[/*:m:2pgroulo][/list:u:2pgroulo] The third looks most likely. Dale Murray, who they got for him, wasn't the most effective pitcher, but he was a horse.
  10. I'm a little confused as to how we judge the bigness (embiggitude?) of offensive acquisitions. I know the team hasn't cut $100 million from payroll. The Mets are up against it. The next person to drop his eggs and shout with surprise that they are struggling will be the first.
  11. Which is something, I think. I think it's reasonable to suggest that this could be a really consistently good pitching team over the next few years and maybe soon. But the outlook on hitting looks murkier right now.
  12. So, how about Tony Randazzo blowing the call on the last out of the Yankee game, tossing Mike Aviles, and then needing to be blocked off by his crewmates from taunting Terry Francona? Lord, there's got to be a better way.
  13. Well, gwash, I coded it into the post. But yeah, Tooey has gone kaflooey. And his girlfriends are all real.
  14. Your avatar was never so appropriate. Spurs and loose bodies beats ligament replacement, right? RIGHT?!

Hey, the no-margin-for-error mantra is my song.
  16. Twitter buzz suggests that these suspensions are about to come down. Besides half the Yankees (but not Jeter, never Jeter), this could turn out to be recorded as a second offense for Ryan Braun. The only Mettish character that looks to be exposed here is Cesar Puello. Is this photo of superhuge Puello with a baby face real? That photo alone should be enough to get him suspended. It looks like his head got put on somebody else's body.
  17. I'm fascinated by the Berra clan. Yogi being a short, squat, and homely catcher, you'd think he'd be the epitome of the "good ballplayer, but no athlete" tag, but he ended up siring a big league shortstop and an NFL wideout. How many fathers can claim as much success in athletic breeding?
  18. He can also love. Trust me, I know. How about we get us an insurance run here? Cool thing about those is they mean you don't have to default to the no-doubles defense in the last two innings.

Assuming Strassburg makes it to the mound, I think we can all guess how this one is going to turn out. It'll turn out the same way as playing the lowly Marlins fresh off a sweep of the Yankees- not the way you hope or expect! Oh, no, I've got that one filed away as a Mets win.
  20. With Werth and Harper giving themselves up to the cause in right, Roger Bernadina is out there until then, and will likely end up in one of the other outfield positions if Werth reappears. You've met Roger and are complaisant with him --- a meaty football type. Scott Hairston, but with more muscles. Can hit opposite field rockets, but can also chase breaking pitches at his feet. Definitely not getting it done this season (.479 OPS --- hello, futility team), but still dangerous. Went 11-32 against the Mets last year, but with no power, so I'm hoping their scouting report does the trick. Don't let me mislead you with my Hairston analogy. Benadina's a lefty. Also, the defense has hurt this team all year. Only the Dodgers have more errata.
