  1. Switzer was a short-lived LOOGy --- may have even been swapped out for Tim Hamulack. Buchholz, I think, was a reliever (Former BoSock?) who made the team out of camp and instantly came up injured. Maybe used PEDs during his rehab, I think.

  3. Panini is an Italian comic book/collectible card company with an American arm. These cards may be wanting information-wise, but as you wrote long ago about the Vespa, sometimes the Italians just can't help but design things that look gorgeous.
  4. Again, not a little disappointing in that regard.
  5. Yeah, the notion is that they always name an all-star/former all-star as the comp at the scouting bureau. The reality juice comes from a Mets blogger looking for a most- or more-likely scenario, rather than an if-everything-falls-into-place one. And it's a tenth-rounder. You know what's an even more likely scenario? The likes of Corey Ragsdale or David Reaver or somebody. A AA flameout that was a nice dream but a typically passing one.
  6. Are you sitting down? Because I hope you're sitting down. http://paniniamerica.wordpress.com/2013/06/11/bears-necessity-panini-america-to-produce-first-ever-bad-news-bears-trading-cards/#more-51760 At a quick glance, there seem to be two sets --- one with the actors' names only, and one with the actors' names and the characters' names in quotes, with a space for autographs. I'd prefer to have them do it as purely as possible, use only the characters' names and maintain the false reality that these are real players, but gift horse/mouth, you know? Big kudos on the retro-retro look --- a turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau look filtered through desperate seventies post-Watergate romanticism. Want to feel your heart beat? Check out this one-shot masterpiece.
  7. Born in Vietnam to US serviceman and Vietnamese national, had a good career in Cincinnati where he served as closer for a bit, fell to the wayside through injury or entropy, tried to come back with the Mets and failed. Wore a shell necklace, something of a mullet, and was seemingly out of shape. Gave us some early Wifey Watch drama, as he married (if I recall correctly) the older sister of one his high school buds, and adopted the four kids from her previous marriage/marriages/relationships/not sure. May have been a health drama with one of those kids too.
  8. After all those nice things I said about Houston and West 4th, those freakin' fake BoHos between Canal and 14th can't be bothered to erect an apple?
  9. I don't know who the many are. but Lupica is wrong six times before he has his coffee.
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Cliffy's the last chance for a hit w/RiSP. I think we're 0-for-85 otherwise. Your joke of eight years ago, but after the other night, let us never joke of this again.
  11. On this day, eight years ago, an inside-the-park homer tied it, an outside-the-park homer won it, and --- too often forgotten --- a great catch by Beltran put the team in a position for those to matter. All executed for the love and devotion of Willie Randolph. Special IGT guests include old timey Crane Poolios abogdan, Rottblatt, martin, Methead, and Iubitul. http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/100/f14_t188.shtml
  12. But none of that should stop Captain America from getting a good kiss off, or Tommy Lee Jones from zinging a clever wisecrack while controlling the vehicle.
  13. And... aside from the speed, isn't there another piece of physics that they miss --- where the aerodynamic progression of the pursuing vehicle (often a Jeep, which is an aerodynamic nightmare already) should be disrupted by it's proximity to the engine of the pursued airplane?
  14. It always is.
  15. Come on. I can't be the only one with muddy underpants.
  16. Current Score: HR: 5 Days in Minors: 1
  17. Yeah, I was really impressed by the horse's speed in Toy Story. What is the takeoff speed of a 747? I'd really like to be that guy who readily quotes the exact speed to all the other viewers during that scene.
  18. Alderson hasn't gotten a free pass. But as has been noted in another thread, he's in his role as a turnaround specialist. He was brought in to blow the team up, many advocated for the team to be blown up, circumstances demanded that it get blown up, and this is what blown up too often looks like. It hasn't been three years, so much as 2.36. Minor league systems don't tend to produce impact players in that time. Even Wright cooked longer. Reyes spent almost exactly that long on the farm, but he wasn't an impact player for a few years after that. One reason not to try Valdespin at short is that he has been a disaster as a minor league shortstop. That's not a definitive reason, but it's a reason. You can also run him out at second and move Murphy to first, which is probably at least part of what they're planning to do. * * * Washington has indeed had a fallback season from LaRoche, last year's Silver Slugger at the spot, if I am not misremembering. But a fallback is merely a fallback, and not necessarily a train wreck. DC rides near the middle of the pack on Engine Number Nine. LaCucaracha has gone .253 / .336 / .455 // .791. While only 22 PAs have gone to any other Nats at first, Tyler Moore has turned the world on by going 3-9 with two doubles. 19. LA may stink, but they've ranked a Dudariffic fourth in offensitude from Station One. Sunset has come to the James Loney era and the return of Adrian Gonzalez to Southern Cal has brought with him a rather Gonzalez-lik .311 / .372 / .481 // .853 slash line. Only 26 plate appearances have gone to anybody else, but they've been hitting too. RankTeamOPS1.9512.9503.8634LAD.8605.8036.8017.8018.7919.76510PHI.74311.73512.71113MIA.53114NYM.50915.501
  20. Well, they currently have a plethora of outfield candidates, and their firstbase candidates are a couple of converted middle infieders.
  21. Phllly is rocking it at 10th, with a defensible .743 1BOPS. Ryan Howard is searching for himself at .251 / .295 / .435 // .730, and facing LOOGys in the seventh inning day after day. But backup Kevin Frandsen has cranked it in 20 plate appearances, at .294 / .400 / .588 // .988. Not bad at all for a bench player who also plays second and third. 22. I'll so take that bet.
  23. Nobody's suggesting that first is easy, ceetar. Or that he won't have an issue or two there. But the job is currently open, and he's current playing left poorly enough that it seemingly negates 100% of his offensive value, which is the fourth highest in the league. And that's while looking more comfortable than last season.
  24. Not Miami. Good guess, though. Miami is one notch ahead of the Mets, OPSing at a pitcherly .531 at the first base position. The bulk of their plate appearances (170) have gone to Greg Dobbs who has rewarded them with a .576 OPS. Backup Joe Mahoney is more respectable at .667 in 27 PAs, but other backups have been invisible with NIck Green posting a blind man's .388 in 19 trips to the dish and Casey Kotchman a dead man's .048 in 21 appearances. Kotchman hasn't even hit against the Mets. RankTeamOPS1.9512.9503.8634.8605.8036.8017.8018.7919.76510.74311.73512.71113MIA.53114NYM.50915.501
  25. I imagine we're all more comfortable outfielders when we get to play deeper. It would be a strategic surrender to have him play generally deep as a rule, but it would be strategic. An alternative that remains is have him start coming in, and then moving over to his left, until he finds himself positioned at first base.
