  1. Certainly true, and the prevalence of relievers who fire it up for one inning getting ridiculous K/9 numbers like 12.5. Starters too! Check out Ollie Perez! All latter-day guys, if not all latter-day saints.
  2. I meant to type fifty. 5-0
  3. Lost in the sweep was a pretty rare accomplishment by the Yankees --- against the Mets or anybody. IN the Mets 9-4 win on Wednesday, Ivan Nova pitched only the fiftieth immaculate inning --- striking out the side on nine pitches --- on record in MLB history. (I imagine some are out there that have been lost to time.) The Mets have pulled the feat off twice. Nobody is known to have ever struck out four batters in an inning on 12 pitches. Three guys have pulled it off twice, and they're pretty much the first three guys you'd probably guess. 4. Yeah, but, how bleh. It's a faded PBR coaster. The kind that looks back up at you and tells you, "You've been looking at me too long, and it's time you did something with your life."
  5. Hey, man, sorry. I didn't say that it did change anything. I said that it can.
  6. Thems are colors that punch me in the nose. No minor league hockey nonsense.
  7. Those weak colors in the design on the 82 cards, though. Bleh. Give me the eye-popping colors that look like it come off of an MLB uniform. Not some faded blue and pale pink from an old beer coaster. Wright deserves better.
  8. It can change the 46 that follow, however. I'm just hoping for them winning one of the next one.
  9. ] When a baserunner is hit by a batted ball in fair territory, he is out. Exceptions to this are if the ball had already, in the umpire's judgment, passed the infielder that might have had a play, or if the runner had reached the sanctuary of a base. If the ball hits hit while he's standing on the base, tough noogies. As a kid, I always imagined a logical extension of this second exception, totally in violation of its spirit, where if a player was safely on a base as the ball approached or passed him, he could deliberately kick it away from the defenders. Or, in the position of David Wright above, he could pick it up and hurl it into the outfield. I imagine there's a specific rule written to restrain players from just that sort of behavior, but imagine if it was on the books. It might come into play once or twice a year. And occasionally go three years without anybody picking up a rolling ball while on base. Or maybe many years would pass, and it would become baseball's version of the fair-catch-free-kick-field-goal attempt --- a rule that has fallen into disuse because few remember it exists on the very rare chance they would get to use it. "In Milwaukee today, we had a rare baserrunner throwaway play today.... ."
  10. You have way too much faith in my lipreading. But I sure hope he didn't say "Boy."

The occupants of the seats are all like "Tough luck, Fucko." The Yankees would lose 10-3. And these folks had to go home and live with themsleves.
  12. Well, we have some clues. 13. Green shirt kid. Also has a dad initiating him.
  14. The funny thing is I focused so much on Johnny Interfero's gesticulations that I missed (1) Big "Champions" guy behind him screaming what appear to be the words "Fuck you! Fuck you, Roy!" and (2) mooks on both Johnny's left and right patiently explaining to their only semi-initiated (a) female companion and ( child that it's actually awesome that they're behaving like a hateful mook mob, that it's some sort of privilege that comes with the ticket.
  15. Yeah, avoiding a letdown is important. But passing five teams and catching a sixth, including three National League squads now in the rearview, is good stuff.
  16. Got to wait 'til August 19 for a chance to complete the sweep.

    Sweep!

    (kick!) Ya gotta ________!
  18. Almost sounds like a resignation.
  19. Elias Swan Hummingbird.
  20. Beating the Yankees four times in a row with so many of their best players hurt is doable. And we did it. But beating Detroit three out of four is quite possibly harder, and I'm thinking any Pittsburgh team that pulled that off is for real.

    Sweep!

  24. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones up on Philly 6-2 in the ninth. Tampa beating Miami (which is almost the law), 3-1 in the eighth. Birds shut out the Nats, 2-0. Only first place Atlanta keeps the day from being perfect, pounding Toronto (and Dickey), 11-3.
  25. May 29-30 Mets 9, Yankees 4 Mets 3, Yankees 1
