  1. If I've learned anything from the Johnny Bravo episode of The Brady Bunch, I've leaned that this is the sort of thing that could lead to a big head. And a big head is the most destructive force in the universe.
  2. Oh well, if you can't win 'em all, at least get the tying run up there in the ninth. Pre-"Body Issue" Harvey doesn't give up three run homers.
  3. Bell sweats a lot for a guy just brought in.
  4. Great to hear a big-league crowd behind the team.
  5. Tol' ya there was still time. Leddy go, Meddy!
  6. Sheesh, nice throw by Pennington. Why'd the Jets ever let him go?
  7. Hey! Valdespin at shortstop!
  8. Great job by Aardvark. It would have been nice to go out and reward him with a run, but alas.
  9. Campana's got Ricky speed. They don't get that DP even if Wright delivers it clean.
  10. I like a popup that allows you to mail a letter while it's up there.
  11. "FUCK YOU, KEITH HERNANDEZ, I AM SO LIKE ALFONZO!"
  12. Was that hit with one hand?
  13. If Mauer wants to win, he'll insist on it. The Twins, in fact, owe it to him to trade him to the Yankees. Repeat as necessary. Duan reads Wallace Matthews. How 'bout that?
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: I'm sure Cardinal fans were crushed at the time by his departure but, at age 33 with still eight and one half years to go on his deal, it looks like they didn't just dodge a bullet but a freaking cannonball. And really, from Reggie Jackson to Mo Vaughn, from Garry Matthews, Jr. to Torii Hunter to Vernon Wells, from Josh Hamilton to... to... Collin Cowgill (yeah, I said it!), how many of those cannonballs have the Angels been willing to absorb for somebody else. It's glorious, in it's own way. Their franchise raises their own Statue of Liberty: Give me your aging, your fat, Your former All-Stars yearning to be paid, The wretched injured of your youth-filled rosters. Send these, the speedless, fastball-lost to me, I lift my purse beside the golden door!"
  15. Usually is usually a a usage chosen to suggest that something occurs most often, but not always.
  16. From Pete Smith to Bruce Chen to Randoll Delgado, I've come to think that any young pitcher dealt away by the Braves before reaching his potential,... probably has less potential to reach than originally though. The Braves have usually done pretty well with those calls.
  17. Since May 30 Gee has made six starts, and is 4-1, 2.45, 7 BB, 40 K, with an opponent's OPS of .699 That'll qualify for Vic's two-month standard by the end of the week. We don't want to admit it, but a lot of guys are playing well. If they can squeeze a little productivity out of centerfield and/or catcher, folks will notice.
  18. It's certainly been the sort of thing that catches up with the Mets. The collapses of 2007 and 2008 were highly characterized by perfectly decent bullpens collapsing like a house of cards the last weeks.
  19. There'll be some minor distinctions.
  20. I fully plan for the Mets and Murphy spend the deadline burning past Philadelphia and Colorado and terrorizing the Nationals in the standings.
  21. The All-Star-bound Dykstra is just toying with the opponents. He leads the league in walks by a healthy margin while still coming in at sixth in RBI, even though few guys want to pitch to him over the plate and he don't chase. He's leading the league in OPS by 72 points and the guy in second is teammate Cesar Puello. He was originally in the Padres system, picked by Alderson and DePodesta, and then they traded to bring him to the Mets' system, so he's surely on their radar, but he can't. Seem. To shake. Double A. It's his third straight year in Binghamton and there's just not that much to do there.
  22. The movie seemed to be referencing this idealized mid-century era where ethinc working-class shubs lived in clean inner city brownstone neighborhoods, packed their lunchpails, got to work without having to hop on a freeway, did their jobs with pride, and had faith in being a small cog in a machine that made a safe livable city for all of them to raise their kids in. It wouldn't have occurred to me that they'd be college boys. High-achieving technical school grads, maybe.
  23. Al Unser, Jr.? Ricky Nelson? Dobie Gillis? d'Artagnan?
  24. Satin would sure look a little better if he could show a little defensive versatility. He's certainly a better hitter than Turner, and Turner is no great shakes defensively at any position.
