  1. How about Gilkey spiking that 80-foot throw to set it up?
  2. Only player not named Russell Branyan to reach the upper deck at YSIII. Bats left, throws right. Plays left and first. Thick in the middle. Twenty-seven years old. Got a good chance to be the black Lucas Duda.
  3. Wonder if Jay-Z represents him.
  4. Maybe about to shed a firstbasey too maybe.
  5. Jon Heyman wrote: The Yankees' offer of several weeks ago is believed to have been for about $160 million over seven years, perhaps slightly more than that. Cano's $310 million request is over 10 years. Passive voice and all, but probably credible. These things get out. Usually accurately.
  6. What Cano has asked for isn't really the most relevant data. What matters is the the $160 million over seven years that the Yankees have offered. I'm not advocating, but there are worse people to throw that kind of munny at.
  7. What I'm saying.
  8. The reports of Cano's people meeting with the Mets brass is a great vehicle for third-rate standup. "Reports say the Mets just wanted to ask him to, you know, pal around with Jordany a little. Make him feel a part of things. Buying friends for Valdespin has got to be in their budget." "Yeah?! I heard Jay-Z bailed on the Mets meeting and sent Lil' Jon instead." Twitter folkz must be having a ball. I'm afraid to look.

But there was a seam, as noted above by GFaFiF, and that seam was named Aardsma.
  10. They were good times, Anita Hawkins. GOOD TIMES!!

Here's a project: Define the parameters of a study that attempts to prove whether or not such guys even exist.
  12. At the beginning of this extension of the thread, I linked an article quoting Doug Melvin, "Theyve indicated that they have extra first basemen, and we have a need, Melvin said. Again, its all about keeping your options open. Nothing imminent, and I dont anticipate anything imminent. But first base is one of our needs, they have excess first basemen, so you can tie two and two together and come up with three. While "lusting" is an embellishment, that quote was what I was what led me to solicit opinions earlier about possible matchups.
  13. "Tejada Files Grievance Against Mets, Told to Get in Line."
  14. Think Milwaukee here for a moment, though. With the Brewers openly lusting after the Mets first base glut (I know, right?), I was just trying to see what we could best hope for there.
  15. Great condition for his age. Lean, athletic, and loose. Easy motion. (For more information on how I expected him to appear and perform, see Atchison, Scott.) Led the 2013 Mets in miscreants subdued on international flights. I'd have to take a good look at the books, but I'd imagine that he tied the team's all-time single season record in that category.
  16. I think maybe. The alternative is risk averse, but your approach is kinda shame averse.
  17. You think you can polish Ike up enough to swing a deal for Aoki? He's sort of a pedestrian acquisition, just good enough to call a starter. A modest improvement on Eric Young, but not so much when you take Young's relative youth and defensive flexibility into account. Ike's been a disaster too much over the last three years, but still has potential to excel. Do you want to move him for more potential, or a guy like Aoki who is more of a sure thing, if an underwhelming one?
  18. That's an interesting move. Can't turn that down if you're Pena's agent.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: The team has a better argument from the rookie standpoint in that they can always claim that we just didn't think he was ready yet. Except that teams have taken to more or less explicitly admitting when they are intentionally delaying arbitration.
  20. Even if Tejada doesn't get to free agency as a Met, he's a more valuable asset to them if and when they trade him, with one more year of control for the team he's going to. It's miserly, but it's protecting the value of their assets. Is it the sort of breach of faith that is worthy of a grievance? Well, to my mind, no more so or less so than keeping a rookie --- that you explicitly feel is good enough to make the team --- down on the farm the first six weeks of the season to deliberately delay his arbitration eligibility.

He's got the attention of Tennis Visor, who's looking over with a worried face, and Shortsleeve Buttondown is getting up to alert security. Go get 'em, Jeff!
  22. This article had Doug Melvin acknowledging the Mets and their alleged first base glut makes them an attractive trading partner. The first, and so far only, comment made proposes Ike for Jean Segura and cash. Um... I'm not particularly averse to that on the face of it.
  23. Ashie62 wrote: Why not try to target some known quantities and blend in some speculative picks... They are. The point is to dial the back the success-or-bust talk. Ashie wrote: Bourn was a bust, but that is one convenient example.. I don't think it's convenient at all. He's the last guy folks demanded the Mets land to prove they are serious. The team backed off when the bidding became too steep, and they probably ended up helping the team for several years. The Mets should land the right players at the right price and hopefully not to prove anything to anybody. There are many ways to spend the money they have --- short, pitching, outfield. But there is limited amount to spend, and I've got no problem with walking away when the bidding gets too steep.
  24. Frayed Knot wrote: * Would Bourn have been even a two-win** addition to last year's team? ... and, if so, would that have been worth the multi-year deal ($48 mil through 2016 plus a vesting option for '17), the loss of the draft pick, and maybe the overlooking (or trading?) of Lagares simply because he was the best guy out there and the call to "do something" from the fans and the press needing scratching, even if it were partly just for pr purposes? ** Not according to BB-Ref, who list Bourn's offensive WAR at less than 2 wins better than Lagares, a gap which is then wiped out and more by Juan's advantage in defensive WAR For what it's worth, that draft pick turned out to be Dominic Smith, who you may never hear from again, but 50 games into his career, is already tagged by Baseball America as the Mets fourth-best prospect and behind only D'Arnaud among non-pitchers.
