  1. I've been weighing Millan for two days. But I can't see where he played with Carter.
  2. Looks like, but there are chapters yet to unfold.
  3. Leaks are coming from multiple directions, and it'll be real interesting to see how this finishes --- with Jay-Z looking like a out of his depth and ruining his client's payday, or a savvy manipulator who is just staging this drama to up his client's market and his brand.
  4. Hold the presses. Looks like Cano/Seattle talks have broken down. A sticking point seems to be whether s "Big Pimpin'" was Jay-Z at his finest or a cynical grab at what was already in the zeitgeist that's really a showcase to advance the brand of guest contributors UGK.
  5. Ah, the golden age of punk posting.
  6. Man, that comic strip just breaks me up.
  7. Oh, and he got Rickey back for Greg Cadaret, Eric Plunk and Luis Polonia. That's dealing as far as I'm concerned. Rickey won an MVP for him the second go-around.
  8. metirish wrote: I don't think Alderson does spectacular. In his career what has been his most "spectacular" trade? I am asking because I have not a clue, but based on his personality I think he doesn't do it, does he have a history on this? He's been a very conservative trader with the Mets, but one can theorize it's because if the deal he wants isn't in the offing, he walks away. It's certainly possible that he's playing for the explosion of nothing. Some of his biggest trades included a five-for-two deal in 1984 getting Tim Birtsas, Jay Howell, Stan Javier, Eric Plunk and Jose Rijo for Rickey Henderson and somebody named Bert Bradley. a three-way trade (which included the Mets) in 1987, giving up Alfredo Griffin, Jay Howell, Kevin Tapani and Wally Whitehurst for Bob Welch and Matt Young. Welch would winn the Cy Young Award in 1990 27 wins and (surprisingly) go 96-60 with the As overall getting Dennis Eckersley (and Dan Rohn) for Brian Guinn, Dave Wilder, and Mark Leonette, who together accumulated exactly zero days of big league service, while Eckersley would shift to the pen and accumate 387 of this 390 career saves from that point forward.
  9. I don't know if he's the best player out there (Cano is, probably), but somebody eventually is going to to decide he's the best risk for the money. And let's keep in mind the Mets probably haven't gotten two consecutive season out of a rightfielder that can even be called "useful" since Darryl Strawberry.

  11. I know you didn't say it. I'm extending the reasoning. The reason they didn't make the move and the Mets might is because different teams have different needs, different standards and philosophies, and different assessments of different talent. And that's good. But teams have to believe in the judgment they have. People make trades with the Yankees often enough. They can't stop and say, "Wait a minute. You're the Yankees. Why would you be offering me this player if he was any good? Why would I give up this other player if the MF Yankees want him?" You simply got to believe that you're the smartest one in the room, even if recent or ancient history doesn't support that. Or at least believe you're the one who sees the angles on this particular issue that everybody else is missing.
  12. Yeah, I mean, the obvious extension of that logic is to fall into "We shouldn't do this because if it was such a good idea, somebody else would have done it, so let's not do it or anything else." It's not the only kind of defeatist logic going around, but it's maybe the most pernicious.
  13. Hi, I'm Marlin McPhail. I'm one of those guys who you, sleeping soundly in your beds, give nary a thought to. But I have the power to make you happy or sad. I'm a big league scout. And while scouting for the Mets, this has been my legacy: Player SignedDraft YrOverallHigh LevelCurrent StatusML WARML AS TeamsMatt Harvey20107MLBNYM40m6.91Ty Wigginton1998514MLBFree Agent2.41Bobby Parnell2005269MLBNYM40m2Josh Edgin2010902MLBNYM40m0.1Collin McHugh2008554MLBCOL40m-1.9Reese Havens200822AAANYM in minorsLas Vegas[AAA]Michael Antonini2007573AAALAD in minorsAlbuquerque[AAA]D.J. Let's face it. If most players don't reach the bigs, that means most scouts aren't netting big leaguers. I'm not quite sure what it means in this day and age to say a scout "signs" a prospect, when a potential #1 pick is going to be cross-checked by several guys, and ultimately brought in to negotiate with the team's top brass, but I like that somebody is still recording that somebody in the organization was the definitive champion of the likes of Matt Harvey (and Bobby Parnell, and, um, Jeremy Gould). I like that because I was that guy. I'm Marlin McPhail.
  14. Does that report really qualify as over-hype?
  15. Sheesh with the sarcasm. It's a real damned-if-the-do-damned-if the-don't scenario of an offseason here.
  16. lolololol.
  17. If he could, I would imagine he would have by now. But in nine years of pro ball, he hasn't appeared there yet. I'm led to conclude (and my eyeballs would support this) that the arm just isn't there.
  18. Yeah, that whole scouting report sounded familiar. Like an upside of Rey Ordez and a downside of Tim Bogar with a Rafael Santana the middling outcome.
  19. I always thought of You Can Count on Me as a Schenectadyish film. Hmmm... I think I need to produce a central NY film festival.
  20. I won't go for "totally," but it's good enough to defeat what I thought was my safest rule --- that any movie that features a promotional poster of the lead character or characters sassily peeking over his or her or their sunglasses is a tipoff that absolutely nothing good whatsoever is on offer.
  21. We've got to get those crazy kids together.
  22. Sooner or later, they gots to lay their money down, though, right? Or else you won't invest because the chances you have suggest team isn't worth investing in. Which it isn't, because you won't invest. So we return to the if-not-him-then-who? territory. But, well, impact free agents all tend to be old-but-expensive. High performance but high mileage. Cano's the young one out there, and he's all about many many years. One might assume there's a trade or two on the table too. So if Granderson is the big fish they reel in, it could well be part of some broader array of (hopefully improvement-generating) moves. A big key to looking at the fourth year is that his injuries have not been of the breakdown-from-continual-usage variety. On the other hand, the dance chair thing doesn't move me.
  23. Melissa Dickson's head explodes.
  24. And frankly, he's just not that into you.
