  1. Sorry, who is Memo?
  2. This is something I'd like to see added to the official record --- wins and losses by substitute managers, and coach-managers who took over after an ejection. I bet Joe Altobelli earned a lot of otherwise uncredited victories and saves after Earl Weaver ejections. Who has been the designated fill-in for Bobby Cox all those years?

  4. I question whether a team getting off the hook is healthy for anti-PED enforcement.
  5. Ceetar wrote: Dontrelle Willis just signed elsewhere actually. Like that will stop the Yankees.
  6. I'm kind of hoping that their load up on soon-to-expire medications DOES work for them, in the short run, at least a little. Because then they'll almost certainly double down and add Barry Zito and Jonathan Broxton and Brad Penny and Dontrelle Willis and some other guys who had a nice 2005. They'll almost have no choice. You'll be watching a Yankee game in mid-June, half paying attention, the team'll be six out, and Al Leiter will be talking about that big series coming up with Minnesota, seeing it as a big chance to make up some ground against the hot division leaders, when all of a sudden, in the sixth inning, you'll be saying, "Holy crap, where did Juan Pierre come from?"
  7. Well, playing Rocca here for a minute, I imagine the thinking is that, yes, they all could've, but he voted against everyone except three who secured their legacies before the strike and one who was new to the league and spoke little English. He also might hold the Braves clubhouse as particularly polluted (I would guess it was in the middle) and Maddux enjoyed way too much benefit from polluted sluggers in his lineup. It's a slim hair, but one that I don't blame writers for working hard at trying to split. Challenge him to follow his logic to its conclusion, sure, but outrage I think is unwarranted. Clearly he's trying to construct an honest and consistent position.
  8. I'm not sure I understand the term. It's pretty debatable.
  9. Fuller list: [list:1nx9r8vv]Right-handed pitchers: Chasen Bradford, Joel Carreno, John Church (my guy!), Jeremy Hefner, Rafael Montero, Miguel Socolovich, Syndergaard, Cory Mazzoni and Logan Verrett. Left-handed pitchers: Adam Kolarek and Jack Leathersich. Catchers: Taylor Teagarden and Kevin Plawecki. Infielders: Brandon Allen, Eric Campbell, Anthony Seratelli and Daniel Muno. Outfielders: Dustin Lawley, Cory Vaughn and Brandon Nimmo.[/list:u:1nx9r8vv]

I was thinking about Conlin's lament that he had hoped to retire earlier but the paper made him an offer he couldn't refuse, and thinking about how men (and women too, I'm certain, but certainly men) get trapped by their own bullshit. We reward them for their worst and their cruelest because it looks like courage and manly swagger, and their worst and cruelest grows and takes over even as they become dimly aware how hateful it all is. How many papers have there been in the last 10 years barely hanging on, with their last draw bringing hits to their site being their signature ancient loathsome blowhard sideshow of a sports columnist?
  12. The Other Shoe That Won't Stop Falling I hope that craziness led to some reflection by whatever body has been responsible for the Spink Award, and in the future they will try and reward quality work instead of the longest surviving blowhard. Conlin was embarrassing (like Madden is) long before anybody ever accused him of being a ped. And when we reward that sort of work, we perpetuate it.
  13. Buncha NRIs beign announced, including Jack Leathersich, Dustin Lawley, Danny Muno, Logan Verrett, and Cory Vaughn.
  14. And that explains why the Sox are being coy too. They could certainly use him on terms favorable to them --- after all they're the champs and they're playing for keeps, and not all prospects slot in nicely. But they don't want to make any extended or extensive commitment to him. In the long term, they have healthy options and don't want to be tied up and tied down. Probably something akin to why the Mets wouldn't offer more years to Ray Knight in 1987.
  15. Nice.
  16. See that area between the two wings, in front of the colonnade, where everybody is gathering? Anybody who tells you the Hall of Fame has no Piazza is lying.
  17. Well, his head might disagree, if it were revived, but I imagine his head would be the first to tell you that his World War II service was all stateside. He trained a lot of men for combat as a flight instructor, but never received any orders to ship out himself.
  18. You think his liberal use of the term "Doctor" was something he picked up from Casey?
  19. Yeah, it'd be nice if a process with the purported purpose of honoring people could have just a little bit of grace around it. I wonder if it wasn't like this before internet or before Bill James wrote The Politics of Glory, or I just don't remember it as such.
  20. Suspended by the BBWAA for a year, too. And with that go his ballpark media credentials. Ka-POW!
  21. I'm not sure, but I think Bobby Valentine just threw President Bush under the bus. http://deadspin.com/bobby-valentine-suspected-ruben-sierra-of-roiding-was-1498067141

  23. I named a bunch above, many of whom were as good as or better than Jack Morris. In addition to those noted by MFS, there are Roger Clemens, David Cone, Ron Guidry, Bret Saberhagen, Frank Viola, Vida Blue, Dwight Gooden, Mickey Lolich, Dennis Martinez, Mario Soto, John Candeleria, Rick Sutcliffe, Orel Hershiser.

He introduced it as a concern on the previous page, unless he meant to reference a different substance and accidentally mentioned Creatine instead.

Where it mentions that they had other conversations with other voters that didn't quite work out and that they intend to do this again? Yes.
