  1. From Rubin's note about Flores being the potential callup: ESPN Stats & Information's Mark Simon computed early Wednesday that Mets opponents have a .278 batting average on groundballs -- highest in MLB. That's not likely to improve, with Duda now the fulltime firstie and Flores likely to steal perhaps something more than a standard backup's time at shortstop from Tejada. Maybe it's not that big a deal, but it's certainly a curiosity considering how much the team has seemingly invested in outfield defense. Maybe that .278 represents a smaller total of ground balls in the denominator than other teams. Maybe the team, considering the pitching staff and the ballpark, didn't think infield defense was as much of a concern. Maybe an even bigger philosophy of their suggests that infield defense should never be as much of a concern as outfield defense... and having infielders who can hit.
  2. Way to double down on the completely un-necessary condescension. It was a joke. One underscoring what you were saying. Surely you could at least try to be cool about that.
  3. I wasn't knocking him. I meant that one run would have kept 'em in that game, and Eric is the sort of small-ball guy that takes you a long way toward getting that one run, if robbing you of some of your three-run homer potential.
  4. Well, I feel confident in saying that it's not him, but the reason you would want him now would be a change in price. Other potential callups could be Campbell and Seratelli. The 51s are so awesome right now (22-10), that anybody is a candidate. Probably they're holding off on announcing a corresponding move to let whoever get one more game in. Maybe it'll be announced after the Vegans are done tonight and he'll use the day off for a travel day.
  5. Greg Peavey seems like a cinch for Organizational Dude of the Day after clocking a two-hit shutout with wife and newborn son in attendance. Jake's cruising along with a 2-1 / 3.16 record, striking out 25 and walking seven in 31.1 innings.
  6. Eric is the Met guy you want when you need score only one. He's like the anti-Schaefer.
  7. Rocky and Sham are like a nosehair platoon.
  8. And that, as they say, is that. Seawolf, you have KP duty until further notice... ...which may never come.
  9. Winning run on third and signalling for Farnie instead. Yikey.
  10. I went to a New York City school. I have pride when my sister and brother Jaspers succeed and do great things. But if and when young men from alma mater play for teams other than the Mets, or worse, directly thwart Met ambitions, I label these men as TRAITORS. Because that's what they are. Hey, look, Reed Johnson is still playing.

  15. Six frames, no runs.
  16. I imagine folks have gotten killed. According to this 2003 report, 35 fatalities had occurred to that date at major and minor league ballparks since 1900, though only five are "ball related."

It took the death of a young girl for them to start doing just that in hockey and had this ball gone eight inches to either side this may have been the incident which started that ball rolling in MLB Edgy MD wrote: That's the problem. The netting will go up after someone gets killed. Latter day stadia have placed the seats so much closer to the plate. I don't think someone getting hurt is the problem. I think the rest of us losing out on the superior "no nets" stadium experience because some shmuck cant pay attention is the problem. Seriously, go sit somewhere else. I understand the libertarian worldview, but I was paying full attention and with all my relatively healthy faculties and the maneuverability of sitting in an aisle seat in a mostly empty stadium, it is still a matter of pure luck that leaves me here talking to you right now. At some level, a host bears some legal responsibility for the safety of a guest. You don't know the soup you're in until you're in it. "The rest of us" would not miss out on much of anything, as netting would likely not encircle the stadium, but rather likely be two triangles of netting extending down from the top of the screen behind home plate to a point about 100-125 feet down the baselines, were the netting would meet the rail. And we don't have a "no nets" stadium experience right now.
  18. This is an economical little series we've got going here.
  19. And... anutter out.
  20. Here we go... Wheeler at the bat.
  21. Blame Barfield.
  22. Two injuried pennies at once? Terry's gonna ride Matsuzaka and Torres hard the next couple of days. We are under way, scoreless into the top of the second.
  23. That's the problem. The netting will go up after someone gets killed. Latter day stadia have placed the seats so much closer to the plate. I snuck down to the front row after a long rain delay at a Bowie Bay Sox game. I was without my glove, and a Josh Barfield liner very nearly knocked my head clean off. I have no idea how I managed to dodge it, and I still suspect that the ball didn't miss me at all, but rather somehow changed composition and phased through my head. Or perhaps it did kill me, and this is my afterlife purgatory.
  24. It's just a joke pointing out the inflation of the text that I did. I'm sorry if my meaning was too elusive, but why do people online keep saying "no idea"? Surely you have some idea. It's a sentence --- with a subject, predicate, object... .
  25. Lagares is in center, so let fans all be attentive Murphy is at second, where he muffs, but is inventive Wright of course, is there at third, his arm be like a cannon Granderson plays right because we paid him lots of mammon Young's in left, no not that Young this one is the other Duda plays at first because we banished Ike, his brother Recker catches day games and he gives me palpitations Tejada plays at short despite the fan base protestations Wheeler deals today I hope he soars to his potential Something 'bout a Mets day game is just so quintessential
