It really is a Big Game, inasmuch as we win it and it's three in a row, and teams that need to win 10 in a row need to win the first three, can't be done otherwise. Even a four-game winning streak is impossible without tonight's contest. Gotta win it. I also want the psychological boost of catching and passing a team in the standings. They haven't done it in a while and tonight, after a day off in swinging Cincinnati, they could pass two of 'em. There's probably also some psych at stake tonight for Sandy and his team. After holding Colon at two separate deadlines, they sure don't want to see him turn into a lemon now.

I don't know from cocaine, but Wash is a guy I never got the idea was taken very seriously as an appointment, but then surprised everybody by succeeding --- kinda like Jerry Manuel, only better, or at least more successful. Then he succeeded some more Wash is a good baseball character and probably a good teacher though I didn't think much of his game management. He was also like Joe Torre in that he looked more broken down at the end of his playing career than he did 20 years later as a manager. I mean, tell me this guy doesn't look like he's in his 50s and knows what the inside of a prison looks like. Whether or not this appointment means anything for Bogar, he's clearly on the manager track.

  5. Just wondering out loud if Topps dodged the "INF-OF" designation outright in those two years or what. I know they usually had a half dozen or so guys who were neither flesh nor fowl and so got the hybrid label.
  6. If Familia gets a fourth PiotM award and then suffers a catastrophic elbow injury (a la Parnell and Wagner), we will know the curse of Brian Stokes is real.
  7. That's kingly stuff, right there. I crown you for that. Did the Topps 1976 cartoon icons not have an Infield/Outfield designation?
  8. Recker caught him, too, in the first series this year, in which Hamilton appeared twice, but only as as a pinch-runner and a late-inning outfield sub.

  10. The Mets had the night off --- in fact the whole NL East did --- but it's worth posting the standings again before the Cincinnati series anyhow, because the Mets, by doing nothing, had a very successful night. The Brewers lost --- again --- pulling Atlanta into a tie for the second Wild Card spot and the Mets within 7 games; and the Padres and Reds lost as well, pulling the Mets into a tie for sixth place, and within a game of fifth. 11. Joe McDonald assures me that he has a reliable source telling him that as long as Fred Wilpon is alive and presiding, Terry's the manager.
  12. I think we could come up with a better name for that. It sort of reminds me of a Polynesian or Aboriginal war dance.
  13. The 2010 20-inning game was a horror. The Mets won and Jerry Manuel still should have been fired the next day.
  14. Mejia takes sole possession of the coveted 17th place all-time career list. Any prediction as to where he will finish? That projection I post isn't particularly helpful, because it's based on his rate over the course of the season, for much of which he wasn't yet the go-to save guy, or even a reliever. 15. Because when somebody with a life to get back to has waited over five hours for the outcome of a game, only to see a guy he never heard of fumble the game away by playing like the minor leaguer he really is, the league is asking more from her fans than she is giving.
  16. There would still be teams burning through long benches and deep bullpens. If teams could scratch a player from the eligibility roster on a daily basis, the first four guys they'd put on the taxi squad would be the four starting pitchers not going that day.
  17. What initially got me was the pile of foam Number One fingers in the corner. Then what really got me was realizing there was a second pile behind the lamp. He's less a Mets fan than a clutter bug, one might think. More non-Mets crap than Mets crap there. Somebody needs to have a yard sale.
  18. Art Howe was, technically, the Mets manager for two years.
  19. Tonight's win enables the Mets to tie the Padres and the Reds in the win column. Hopefully they both stay within striking distance during the game off. Framazingly, by taking this series the team gains two in the Wild Card race. Too bad they had to go and give away a win during it, or it might have sparked an imagination or two. Division play would suggest the Mets ought to be in third, beating up on the Phils, handling the Marlins more or less, getting handled by the Braves more or less, and getting beat up on by the Nats. It usually doesn't work out so... semetrically. 21. He's outplayed Flores on both sides of the ball. They may want to get more looks at Flores, and they've gotten plenty, but that's no reason to bury Tejada forever. There'll be other games.
  22. St. Louis cockpunches Pittsburgh with a 1-0 victory off a Peter Bourjous walkoff hit in the ninth. Milwaukee continuing to swoon, down 6-2 to the Cubs in the ninth.
  23. Wes Westrum didn't have a whole lot of power in general, but he had enough to sock it out of the Polo Grounds with regularity. He has to be one of 'em. Certainly had the most homers in history among players with the middle name of Noreen.
  24. Joe Torresima was a power source.
  25. Stomp it, Jenrry!
