Got the best center fielder in the world. What the hell you want? Eggs in your beer?

Is that allowed?

You don't have it on the chart above, but Redmond got extended through 2017, so Maddon ain't going south.

I'll give it a shot. 1985 to 1986: 1985 Rank/Dude/1985 Plate Appearances/1986 Status 1 Keith Hernandez 682 Returned 2 Gary Carter 633 Returned 3 Wally Backman 574 Returned 4 Rafael Santana 564 Returned 5 George Foster 504 Returned 6 Darryl Strawberry 470 Returned 7 Howard Johnson 428 Returned 8 Mookie Wilson 367 Returned 9 Danny Heep 305 Returned 10 Ray Knight 290 Returned 11 Lenny Dykstra 273 Returned 12 Kelvin Chapman 159 Released in the offseason, replaced (in effect) by Tim Teufel 13 John Christensen 133 Traded in the Ojeda deal, replaced (in effect) by Kevin Mitchell Almost! In 1986-1987, we lose both Foster and Mitchell. (Even though Foster was already gone, he'd still finish in the top 13 for 1986.)

Moved that post here. Two threads with similar names. But this seems to be the home for it.

Not a direct marketing campaign, but it did "leak" that Sandy thought that GRANDERSON + YOUNG - HARVEY= 90 WINS last spring. I don't think it leaked. Sandy openly challenged his team to win 90, insisting the talent was there. He did not link it to one acquisition, though, and I wouldn't expect anybody in baseball to tag Cuddyer as a total solution for anything. Regarding salary, since they opened last year, they've shed Ike Davis and Chris Young, and for what it's worth, Bobby Abreu, Kyle F. Farnsworth, Jose Valverde, John Lannan, and probably Omar Quintanilla, and Daisuke Matsuzaka. Some of that money will get gobbled up by raises, certainly, but some should be left over. And some money will likely be available for re-allocation if and when they clear up their six-man starting rotation --- possibly to pay the salary of whoever they get when they do that clearing up.

I don't need a deal to make me say "Holy shit!" I've been around long enough to know that "Holy shit!" deals turn out to be "Shit!" deals as often as not. I appreciate a focus on wining ballgames, rather than offseason back pages. And I don't see the Mets selling Michael Cuddyer as the difference-maker on a playoff run. Either he's worth the money he's paid (by the Mets or whoever) or he isn't. I don't know what that money is, so we can only speculate at this point, but it seems to be a little out there to speculate on the Mets marketing this guy as a playoff ticket or a "total solution for a winning season." And if that happens, then the issue is with the Mets marketing strategy.

Hey kids, grab a deadline deal in this thread and find out how it worked out! Kendrys Morales down the stretch for the Twins: 162 PA: .234 / .259 / .325 // .584. Gulp!

Masato Yoshii, standing up to the culture that has Japanese schoolboy pitchers throw a million pitches before they graduate high school.

I don't know what the price tag is or what other maneuvers might come. All I think is that they're a better team with him than without him.

Hopefully, unless a lot of things move around, there won't a lot to be looking for in the marketplace, save for a possible right-handed caddy, and some fringer to share 1B and DH in AAA with Allan Dykstra and Brandon Allen. Two things jump out when looking at this list. 1) Was there or wasn't there advocates last year for the team to bring in Kendrys Morales and/or Carlos Pea? I know there was supposedly some team interest in Corey Hart. 2) Was Victor Martinez really that good? Look at those walks and strikeouts. That's raking. When trying to guess which free agents had good years, it's always a good bet to pick the Tiger over the Mariner, but man, that has to be one of the great walk-year performances on record. I don't tend to think of acquiring Cuddyer necessarily comes with a "but no one better than this" caveat.

F'wait a minute? What about Mike Barwis? Is one of them gonna be the system coordinator and the other guy the MLB coach?

Bad news for 86 Mets Completionists.

Or Young!

It's relatable. Few people can be a great athlete. Few can be smart. Not everybody can be incisive, humorous, or a good communicator. But we can all be dicks. Let's put a bunch of dicks up there.

But we do know that Eric Young was a nominee last year, but not Lagares. So as far I'm concerned, the process is unimpeachable.

Provides right-handed cover at first, too.

Is repurposing and marketing a validly printed logo a violation in the same sense as printing and marketing 'em on your own? The greater story and greater question, though, is... Department of Homeland Security?

Duda totally turned things around on his watch, and d'Arnaud and Niewenhuis started showing signs of life for the first time under his watch as well. Honestly, Hudgens having a job when this guy doesn't strikes me as a miscarriage of justice. Well, from the Mets' point of view, this guy has a job and Hudgens doesn't.

Hang on to your knickers.

The Star Ledger offered to boilerplatiest of boilerplate articles: "MLB hot stove: 9 Mets key offseason dates for 2014 & 2015." They strangely underscored a lot of non-key dates, as if re-signing their free-agents is what the Mets offseason hinges on. Nov. TBD: The fifth day after the end of the World Series is the last one to make qualifying offers to eligible free agents. The latest the World Series can end is Oct. 29. Is there really that much drama around whether they're going to resign Quintanilla? Nov. TBD: Deadline to accept qualifying offers is the 12th day after the World Series. Quintanilla fans will be up all night. Nov. TBD: The Mets will name a hitting coach at some point. This may linger until December, tormenting batting coach fans. True for the Mets. True for the Rangers and Cubs and Marlins too. Dec. 2: The deadline for teams to offer deals to unsigned players. Don't let Matsuzaka slip away!!

You guys following this tied-ass game? There's a panda involved, somehow.
