Frayed Knot wrote: Never knew of the Pride-Pride relationship. And in full disclosure, though I wondered if I'd maybe heard this before, my only source on that factoid is the IMDB, which has steered me wrong in the past. G-Fafif wrote: But I am having a hard time believing Casey Stengel took time out from his busy schedule of inventing the Mets to pass that much judgment on Charley's fitting-in proclivities. The report is rife with ambiguity, at least from the Mets' side the year, the names, are all carefully dodged. From Pride's side, the bats and the quotes are all vividly detailed. The year is important, because we fast forward from 1960 to an ambiguous tryout with the Angels to a point in time where Pride is established enough as a singer that the manager knows the nature of his act and considers a tryout to be a publicity stunt, which seems to push this past Casey Stengel's tenure and past the point where his age would no longer allow a workout with the Mets to be a viable audition, as he'd have been sliding into his late 20s by then and away from the game for five years or so.

Logan Verrett smashing so far for Baltimore: Nine innings, two earned runs, one walk, eight strikeouts. The irony (and perhaps advantage) for the Mets is that possibly the best scenario for Logan Verrett making the team is if they shed a little Matusz.

Biographical sketch of the great singer Charley Pride includes this passage, which impugns Casey Stengel by implication, if not by name. (It certainly could have been a minor league manager who gave CP the brushoff.) By 1960, Pride left semi-professional baseball and the American Negro League to play for a C-team. He also had a chance to try out for the Angels, but he was rejected. Pride tried for the last time to play for the New York Mets. Charley bought six bats and engraved his name in them. He sent the bats along with a telegram to the Mets camp at St. Petersburg. The manager didnt like Pride because he thought Charley Pride was trying to fit in with the country people. So Charley sent a telegram saying Im not a black man singing white man music, I am an American singing American music. I worked out those problem years ago, and everybody else will have to work their way out of it too. As a result, the manager told the other players if they wanted to see Charley Pride tryout, they would have to take Pride out to a pasture because he wasnt running a tryout camp. Thats what ended Charley Prides baseball career. A little sauce is added to this tale in that, twenty-four (or so) years later, the Mets drafted Charley's nephew Curtis in the 10th round of the 1986 amateur draft. He would toil for the Mets for a half dozen years before walking away as a minor league free agent, eventually signing with Expos, fashioning an 11-year career, and becoming the first deaf player in the majors since World War II. What the bottom line adds up to is that, despite ample opportunity over the years, the Mets have never taken the field with Pride. Man, not a lot of predictions or predilections for Zack Thornton. How about me? Nobody's been thinking much about me, but I've had a bullpen spot pretty much sewn up before even arriving in camp. Folks call me The Long Man. And that's who I am. [fimg=500:1t1xfyph]http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.1407239!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/article_970/metsrun24s-3-web.jpg[/fimg:1t1xfyph] That's me right there. I bring it grim and I bring it pissy. But that's the sort of attitude that gave you smelts a 3.06 ERA over 97 innings. What do you think you'll squeeze out of me this year?

If you're at loose ends, but really want to bring something to the table, get us some new posters before the season starts. God knows I'm not bringing them in. Btw, is irish not posting recently?

Makes sense. The removable cloth covers were a space saver back when most teams also maintained a second cart for the visitors. The money move here is that whoever designed those hat-covers for the carts thought enough about the authenticity to give them the green underbill.

And well he should not, grinding through multiple organizations and the indy leagues before getting that first spring invite at age 28. I also like that Kelly has a grass stain on her butt. They let you on the field, you do some sliding, Kelly. -
Yeah, that's playing in AAA at 20, but like Reyes (or Dilson Herrera), he's been typically among the youngest two or three guys in his league. But even a little moreso.

Francisco Lindor is interesting. He's kept rising up the prospect charts for four years, despite not having one standout season or flashing one standout tool. And then you realize "Oh, he's, like, kinda good at everything. And he's very good that way." I guess he's like d'Arnaud. Or even Wright. And he's been young for his league all the way through. Checking his profile now, he's been between four and seven years younger than the mean of his league all the way up. Playing with the big kids, just being average has been outstanding.

There's more than one Zack/h on this roster, and I'm the one with an intact UCL. But the rest is a mystery. I'm the bounty for Ike Davis, so surely they liked something about me, but I showed none of the acuity with Las Vegas that I showed with the Buccos' AAA team in Indianapolis or wherever. Apart from that, I kinda look like a character actor. The Mets didn't add me to the roster, and for the second straight year I survived the Rule V draft, so there's not a lot of faith out there that I can stick in a major league bullpen. But here it is. It's March 17 and I'm still hangin' round. What's it gonna be? Zach in Fifteen? I mean, surely I'll out-pitch the other guy, right?

Mets put a video of Plawecki's homer and both Plawecki's grandma and Muno's mom have seemingly appeared in the thread.

So you suckers missed a game here. deGrom went five innings and faced the minimum, only to see his team fall behind due to a conspiracy of Rice, Goeddel and Familia. But the team stages an awesome comeback with five in the eighth: MIA 4, NYM 1. Pitching Substitution: Mike Dunn replaces Andre Rienzo. Defensive Substitution: Tim Federoff replaces left fielder Reed Johnson, batting seventh, playing left field. =#FF0000]One out. 1. =#0040FF]Matt den Dekker strikes out swinging. 2. =#0040FF]John Mayberry walks. 3. =#0040FF]Kirk Nieuwenhuis hits a ground-rule double (5) on a flyball to left center field, =#0040FF]John Mayberry to third. 4. With =#0040FF]Brandon Allen batting, wild pitch by Mike Dunn. =#0040FF]Kirk Nieuwenhuis scores. MIA 4, NYM 2. 5. =#0040FF]Brandon Allen out on a fly ball to center fielder Jordanny Valdespin. =#0040FF]Kirk Nieuwenhuis scores. MIA 4, NYM 3. =#FF0000]Two outs. 5. =#0040FF]Wilfredo Tovar on a ground ball to left fielder Tim Federoff. 6. =#0040FF]Wilmer Flores walks. =#0040FF]Wilfredo Tovar to second. Pitching Substitution: Preston Claiborne replaces Mike Dunn. 7. =#0040FF]Johnny Monell homers to right center field. =#0040FF]Wilfredo Tovar scores. =#0040FF]Wilmer Flores scores. NYM 6, MIA 4. 8. =#0040FF]Kevin Plawecki flies out to center fielder Jordany Valdespin. =#FF0000]Two outs. NYM 6, MIA 4. Other notes: Neither Rice nor Goeddel distinguished themselves in the quest for the last bullpen lefty and righty spots. Steven Matz pitched only one inning, despite pitching effectively. If you're looking for a sign that the Mets might be considering him for the pen, well, there you go. We have a Murphy-Flores-Duda double-play in captivity. Monell's homer was the third of this spring, and reign of Recker has to be considered to be in grave danger. Brad Hand is the Dillon Gee of the Marlins or at least what Dillon Gee was 24 hours ago a perfectly viable big league starter waiting for an injury to return him to the rotation, the number six starter on a five-man staff. But the Mets did little against him, despite starting seven of their eight expected opening day players. The Mets St. Patrick's Day hat was understated this year solid kelly green with the NY insignia and beanie button in Ulster orange. No Mr. Metprechaun. Wheeler: Torn Ligament, Tommy John Surgery Likely
Edgy MD replied to Gwreck's topic in New York Mets Talk
Yes, and just to clarify, the next two paragraphs of my post above were addressed to my friend, ceetar, and his comments in response to mine, which I bequoted. -

Yeah. But if you're addressing my post, that's why I used the word "unless". All three possibilities are in play. No, I was addressing ceetar's post. I don't pretend to know what the Mets should have done. I'm just pointing out that the MRI giving a negative result with regard to a tear doesn't necessarily lead to the conclusion that the tear was there. I'm just loyal to the logic, man. I don't know why you chose my point to play that jazzy "oh, wait" game. -

I'm not sure what they're supposed to do either. Monitor, evaluate, maybe prescribe exercise. But when you get to spring, and the guy starts throwing in earnest, in game situations, and it goes, it goes. Presuming guilt and searching for facts to back it up isn't getting us far. Elbows go. Nobody wants them to. Nobody knows quite how to stop it from happening. The notion that they were hiding results to push season tickets is nutty for any number of reasons. -
White, with green bleeding through underneath.

deGrom: 5.0 innings, no runs, one hit, six strikeouts.

Upper-decky Plawecki puts the Mets ahead with a clout!
