Robles, Robles!

Ceciliani, very gloveless.

Who's your closer? Robles? Carlos Torres?

Strange to see Laggy playing so deep where he didn't have a crack at that blooper.

Tough Muno game. Have a Parnell Day.

Boom. YOU SEE WHAT YOU GET?!!!

Two strikeouts... and a satellite launching by Freddie Freeman.

This is all as confusing as it is exciting. Rubaiyat is reporting that the Mets intend to add Nieuwenhuis to the big league roster, at least for the time being, before possibly (likely?) trying to sneak him through waivers again. But how? The team is seemingly shorthanded in every department save starting pitching. The obvious guy for him to replace would be Ceciliani, but how could you justify letting him replace the guy who replaced him, when the latter is just starting to show some batsmanship, and Neiuwie's fortunes haven't exactly reversed? And besides Ceciliani is already listed as tonight's starting center fielder. I imagine there are going to be one or more additional transactions in the next few days, possibly before the day is over, what with a guy coming off the bereavement list, a guy coming off the paternity list, and Vic Black likely to relaunch. I hope Lunchpail hasn't trashed his Nieuwenshirt. Our two new names both display the Mets' affection for signing the distant relatives of their old Caribbean pitchers. Expect both to get assigned to the low minors (likely even the DSL, to start), and not be heard from again for a few years. They're both international signees, but expect announcements of draftee signings to start trickling into this space in the coming weeks. "Kirk, try and stink up the joint, and then we can get you back, and... You know what? Don't try. Just... go get 'em."

Why the heck is Unser's logo patch so faded? I'd guess it was commemorative 1977 New York blackout version of the patch, but I'd quickly be reminded that he was gone by mid 1976.

Cool that we both dug up the same Nieuwenthread.

Nieuwenhuis bieumerang!! Mets re-claim Kirk off of Angelwaivers! They'll probably just try a second time to sneak him through waivers, and the whole cycle may repeat itself, but cool!

Looking forward to a point early next year when Cuddyer and d'Arnaud and Tejada and Herrera and maybe Campbell or Ceciliani or somebody conspire to make it an all-nominally-active-on-the-Mets top ten.

And it's Markakis, a guy with a long reputation as the sort of guy you want up in that situation, who may not give you a grand slam, but is a damn good bet for a walk or a productive out. I got in a Facebook exchange yesterday with a "longtime diehard Mets fan" who opened with "Wow!! You know the Mets lineup is Awful when you have Flores batting Cleanup!" Had to be told by three guys during the game that the Braves were countering with a cleanup hitter with no homers. While this discussion was going on, Flores was adding 0.138 wins to the Mets ledger, while Markakis was subtracting an astounding 0.615 wins from the Braves.

How strange that the Braves have gone from a team that was almost built around a seemingly inexhaustible bullpen supply of homegrown high heat throwers (some with control even) to a team holding their breath through appearances by the likes of journeymen such as Dana Eveland. And in many ways, the Mets have become the exact opposite. And among the advantages the Mets' starters have given them is that their longer workdays mean less of a burden upon the bullpen, and fewer critical appearances by the back-enders. All that said, facing Freeman and Markakis with the bases loaded and lex Torres on the mound and all around the plate was NOT for the faint of heart. Last night's win felt a little stolen.
