  1. Every day I'm rooting for the Yankees to drop out of the race, but now I realize they're the team I most want to face in the World Series. I may feel different next week. Who knows with Houston? They're young like the Mets and crazy unpredictable. They may crush a team in a postseason series, or get crushed laughably themselves.
  2. Well, wherever they are now, they will have reached a further point by the end of the playoffs. How much further, again, only Megdal knows right now. The advantage of Cespedes is that he doesn't have to live at this rate. (Indeed, it seems impossible that he could). If he just plays at his prior career norms, it'll go a long way toward taking the heat off of the coming generation of contributors: d'Arnaud/Flores/Lagares/Herrera/Conforto/Nimmo/Cecchini, etc. If he joins Wright and Granderson (and maybe Duda and Cuddy) in doing some of that during the first half his contract, they'll be taking the heat off of him by the second half. Anyhow, that's a possible argument for being a little bolder.
  3. September double headers between contending teams makes for some pretty great baseball. You've gotta leave it all out on the field and then come back and play nine more.
  4. Josn Johnson joining the highly exclusive three-time Tommy John Club. This time, they're going to transplant a tendon from his hair.
  5. Lopping off crappy, institutional name-brand baseball writers a few weeks before the post-season sounds less like budgetary constraints and more like a budgetary emergency.
  6. The other amazing thing to read back there is that Fulmer was picked with the bonus pick the Mets got for the Yanks signing Pedro Feliciano. Perpetual P just keeps giving.
  7. Dudes behind home plate are doing the arm-twirling thing.
  8. Nope, he's out of the game.
  9. Hoping Du breaks through.
  10. And in the sense that there is an A Team, that's probably not it, as it lacks a certain Floresian factor.
  11. Lucas, they're batting you seventh. Get very angry.
  12. Fangraphs puts him fourth among National Leaguers in net WPA, as contrasted to his far-and-away first-placiness in WAR. Believe in clutch or not, that's really meaningful to me. 1) Anthony Rizzo, Cubs: 6.84 2) Joey Votto, Reds: 6.60 3) Kris Bryant, Cubs: 5.99 4) Bryce Harper, Nationals: 5.58 5) Andrew McCutchen, Pirates: 5.50 6) Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks: 5.35 7) Matt Carpenter, Cardinals: 4.66 8) Curtis Granderson, Mets: 4.42 9) Adrian Gonzalez, Dodgers: 4.16 10) Carlos Gonzalez, Rockies: 3.83 11) David Peralta, Diamondbacks: 3.22 12) Justin Upton, Padres: 3.18 13) Jung-ho Kang, Pirates: 3.02 T14) Buster Posey, Giants: 3.00 T14) Adam Lind, Brewers: 3.00 16) Matt Kemp, Padres: 2.71 T17) Matt Duffy, Giants: 2.30 T17) A.J. Pollock, Diamondbacks: 2.30 19) Daniel Murphy, Mets: 2.20 20) Yunel Escobar, Nationals: 1.99 Not as way-up-there as a Nats fan might hope, in the great scheme of things. He's in fact dead fucking last in the league in their clutch performance rating. Nobody else is close! Plus he's a big baby.
  13. The thing is, though, that the Nats weren't on top most of the year. The Mets wuz. Just, you know, slowly fading into the early summer.
  14. Whether or not your or I think Curtis Granderson deserves MVP ballot support I will nonetheless look for and celebrate if he gets any.
  15. How about "Stay fresh and healthy" as number two?
  16. Yeah, you don't want to make too much of beating the Yankees. But while it may just seem like being grudgy, it has an actual tangible effect for the Mets prospects going forward if they continue to make inroads into the Yankees' hold on the marketplace. Get a secondary color, suckers!
  17. I just like catching the Cubs for honor's sake. I don't like the whole "Yeah the Mets are running away with their crap-assed division, but they'd be in fourth place in the NL Central" argument. Now it's third place, suckers. Watch out Pirates.
  18. Checking my answers: Magadan: 610 hits for the Mets but only 123 for the Marlins. INCORRECT! =#0040FF]Castillo: 337 hits for the Mets and 1,273 for the Marlins. CORRECT!
  19. I don't remember ever hearing an answer. Anybody?

His line was .244 / .275 / .549, with 25 runs scored and 33 rbi. But Strawberry had a stretch in 1990 that beats Cespedes. From June 8 to July 25 (41 games), his line was .336 / .421 / .718 // 1.139, with 17 home runs, 34 runs scored, and 42 rbi. The Mets went 30-11, and went from 9 1/2 games behind the Pirates to 1/2 game back. That doesn't have the neat storyline of what Cespedes has done, but it's pretty stunning. This is excellent work by Dino J. Outstanding.
  21. June 10, Harvey threw a wheel in an 8-5 loss. It takes a village. Chris Heston, it turns out, isn't such a no-name but is one of the better rookie pitchers this year. Fortunately, we have it on good authority that "Logan Verrett Will Be the Next Chris Heston."
  22. Kingman 76 was certainly one I was thinking of.
  23. Shmoly crap, they passed the Cubs! Black cats for everybody!
