  1. Braves pitching coach.
  2. I like that bottom line, but he's only got Terry two-thirds correct. His behavior and pronouncements certainly indicate he's going to bat Cuddy over Conforty against lefties.
  3. The team's 51 stolen bases ranks but 46th of the 54 Mets teams in history. All the teams below them are from the pre-Torre era, with the exception of the 1994 Mets who were the least-stealingest Mets in history, with 25. The Mets 2015 stolen base leader is Curtis Granderson, with 11. The 1994 leader was John Cangelosi, with five. Roger Cendeo once stole four in a game for the Mets.
  4. Terry has a job for himself. More than half his pitching staff are starting pitchers, and all his offensive players save for Plawecki and Nieuwenhuis were starters or platooners for most or all of the season. Daniel Murphy could start every game. Kelly Johnson could start none. But I'd hate to drive a truck through the difference between the two.
  5. Billy Wagner!
  6. Amazin'. If you give the Nieuwenhuis/Uribe tie to Nieuwie, we practically have the same team the Mets chose. Our only mistake is carrying them both, while throwing Goeddel overboard.
  7. Yeah, Mazz was my next guess. Mazzilli's trade came after the new regime was in place. Henderson was gone and Stearns was perpetually on the shelf, so he would have seen himself as something of a leftover in the Mookie-and-Hubie generation, and was just knuckle-headed enough to believe his New York bona fides (and not his .228 batting average) represented some sort of threat to the new management, not recognizing that his mustache undermined his 1981 season and derailed his rising career.
  8. El Segundo Escupidor wrote: I can live with Wally going to the Padres, but i'll be devastated if he ends up in DC. Pretty funny, considering your avatar.
  9. That's Grote. To the max.
  10. 80 pitches in a simulated game and didn't have to be carried off. I'm guessing Matz is getting the call.
  11. Wow. I was too busy counting Murphy's doubles. Periods of Mets success are so much fun for everybody, except Ed Kranepool, sadly.
  12. It's true. At the end of the 2006 playoffs, I kept waiting for the Cardinals to come by and seize my possessions. To strip the clothes from my back and throw my wife into their victory wagon along with the spouses of other fans. They never came. I thought I'd be chained in the basement of an Anny Busch factory working 16-hour days for no pay and subsistence rations. Didn't, in fact, happen.
  13. Hey, it's such a crapshoot. It's the playoffs. There's no bottom feeding. They're facing the best of the best, and the whole thing can turn on a single performance that is a complete outlier. (A game-winning homer by Mike Scoscia off of Dwight Gooden? GtF outa here!) The Dodgers are the most expensive team of all time, an organization that totally over-loaded their plate at the salad bar, producing a roster that is an astounding 24.4% more expensive than the second-costliest team. And yet they've been playoff also-rans six times since 2004, and the qualifying difference this year was a non-roster free-agent signee utility infielder released by the Mets turning out to be their best hitter. So, yeah, sweat it. Nothing's gonna come easy. But if it makes you feel any better, the Dodgers fans and everybody associated with them (except Vin Scully) is sweating it to. Mattingly's only got his head on the line, so no biggie.
  14. "He was crushed," Weathers said. "He told me, 'you can be an Astro. I'm gonna be a Met.' And then he didn't come out of his room for almost an hour." David F. Weathers It's sweet, until you see the filthy little turncoat decked out in Cincinnati red.
  15. It'll dawn on you soon what a breeze this question was.
  16. I like the Ranger uniforms far more than the Blue Jays, and that's usually what I go for in American League match ups. But if I can't root for John Gibbons and R.A. Dickey and Jos Reyes, who can I root for? Wait, a minute... what?!
  17. Not R.A. It's gonna hit you like a lightning bolt.
  18. I can't believe you guys have grown so foggy about this guy.
  19. They were young men in the eighties acting like young men, but Darling is more than a little caught up in the myth of the team. It's absolutely untrue that half of them didn't make the parade. And to the extent that it's got an air or truthiness, well, the next point may be to note that there may be a reason it was your last parade.
  20. Wow, how do pick from these? [fimg=700:1s3tepc6]http://a1.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2015%2F1008%2FMetsDodgers.jpg[/fimg:1s3tepc6] LA has a greater percentage of that performance concentrated in the two guys at the top of their staff. That's could be seen as advantage in a short series where you're able to give a larger percentage of the innings to a smaller percentage of the staff, but is perhaps a disadvantage in the relative lack of redundancy, suggesting if one guy doesn't have it, he's got less backup than a Mets starter would. Who knows?
  21. Not Hampton. Guys, your memory has all clouded up.
  22. I'm heading to Mars this evening. A lot has been commented on about how many films feature (in part or whole) rescuing Matt Damon. Not knowing his family status in The Martian, I'd like to note that a lot of films feature (in part or whole) a parentless Matt Damon. Has any actor ever been so consistently been portrayed for sympathy? He regularly gets orphaned and marooned. Meanwhile, An Alarming Number Of People Think “The Martian” Is A True Story.
  23. I didn't. Did you know that nobody has written a SABR bio for Ron F. Hunt?
  24. Not Tim Teufel. Traded for Garry Templeton. Man.
