Then come in sliding, not running past the bag and then submarining. Hit dirt before the opponent's leg, slide within reach of the bag, and all's well with your teammates and the world. I don't think Utley's dirty (necessarily, anyhow). Just a competitor who got carried away in the heat of battle.

More notable is to see Cuddy riding the pine. -
I mean, I may be nuts, but I'm not Will. [youtube:2376z3b0]BheBEQIKUxI[/youtube:2376z3b0] You out there, Will? We're here for you, Buddy!

We've all been down this road. I mean, I can't really say I've never been this outraged. Utley was over-aggressive and should have gotten tossed. Roger Clemens was insane and should have gotten arrested. Yeah, Piazza walked away while Tejada very sadly did not, but the miscarriage of justice, given the evidence at hand, was just as insane if not more then. I don't know what happens to me after this series, but I don't think I'm quitting. I think I'm DOUBLING DOWN!

Hey Dodgers, here's the scouting report on Matt Reynolds: he's your worst nightmare. Also notable is that both halves of the Mets' Jos Reyes compensation package are now on the post-season roster, which is further than Reyes has gotten since leaving the Mets. That said, a statement of solidarity would be nice. If they all wore a #11 patch in their sleeves, or wrote "R" in eyeblack under their left eyes & "T" under their right eyes, that would kind of impressive.

I don't know what's going to happen. I'm rooting for full and unambiguous victory at the baseball thing. Great athletes overwhelmed by their outrage throwing baseballs at each other feels appealing in the short term but is, in fact, a terrible thing that is less satisfying in the end than it promises to be. By the way, could you imagine if Lucas Duda lost control? If, like, he was as introverted and socially awkward as we all seem to think he is, but he had one friend on the team a little guy who made him feel comfortable, played checkers with him and helped him shop for suits, took him to parties but was happy to take him home early if Lucas got uncomfortable, and they'd just play X-Box games and drink a few beers. And then that guy got spiked right in front of Duda and he was rolling around in pain. And then a switch went off in Lucas's head? Could you imagine? Seven guys would not be able to hold him back. And I mean Cespedes on the right and Recker on the left (assuming, in this scenario, that Recker is active) and five other big dudes Syndergaard and Harvey going for the legs, and Familia wrapped around the neck and still others struggling to get in there but hit by Lucas' swinging elbows. It'd be terrifying. On one hand, you'd be covering your children's eyes and looking for the remote; on the other, you would not be able to turn away.

If the Mets had swept, Mattingly would be fired the next day. And he still may taste the axe and taste it quickly if the Mets win this, so Utley, as shameful as his act was, may well have broken Tejada's leg, but saved Mattingly's neck. I'm not surprised a self-interested sense of honor has led him to cover Utley's back. But he's embarrassingly wrong. I imagine even Yankee fans who see him as a secular saint would begrudge that. If this post is irrelevant to you, please don't respond.

You also want to keep Flores as fresh as possible.

This is amazing. Should he enter a game, he'll be only the second player (after former-Met farmhand Mark Kiger) since 1885 (Bug Holliday of YOUR CINCINNATI REDSTOCKINGS) to debut in the post-season. It's crazy to be offline for a few hours and come back and find the whole world has changed.
-
Well, that's an important point. My point was to dispute Mattingly's position that Met fans to the last are blinded by partisanship. I'm not defending or indicting Wright there, so much as defending the integrity of my fellow fan (which, Mr. Mattingly, I'm not always inclined to do).

I bet he's got more hits than Lance Johnson. Ike Davis too, I would guess. -
First and foremost, the play should have been ruled interference. Section (a)(13) states: (A batter is out when) A preceding runner shall, in the umpires judgment, intentionally interfere with a fielder who is attempting to catch a thrown ball or to throw a ball in an attempt to complete any play. The explanation follow rule 5.09(a)(13) from official MLB rulebook. The objective of this rule is to penalize the offensive team for deliberate, unwarranted, unsportsmanlike action by the runner in leaving the baseline for the obvious purpose of crashing the pivot man on a double play, rather than trying to reach the base. Obviously this is an umpires judgment play. There is not a person in the world that can watch this replay and reach any other conclusion. You could travel to Nepal, pull indigenous people off a mountain, show them the replay and ask whether the runner is trying to go for the base, or the player, and every single one of them will say he was going for the player. You cannot reach any other conclusion when a man runs past a base, and delivers the force of his entire running start into the lower half of an opposing player. In response to Don Mattingly, David Wright has been called for sliding out of the baseline in pursuit of a player. He was ruled out and the runner at first was ruled out. Mets fans, as I recall, were fine with that.

He doesn't have to. Terry could and should have called for a replay review with regard to the slide.

I don't know if "they" is the league or the Dodgers, but I don't think it's about keeping him out of New York. Frayed Knot wrote: Which, of course, makes it, once again, eerily similar to the Clemens violation. If his transgression was worthy of discipline after the game, how was it considered kosher during the game? Was Clemens ever disciplined? Yes. He got a fine that was higher than guys tend to get when they are actually ejected, which only underscored the miscarriage. Frayed Knot wrote: Anyway, the 'How can it be' part is because it's the umps' judgement ruling in the first case and then the league deciding on something else after the fact. What they're saying, despite not specifically saying it, is that the umps royally screwed up their call. Sure, but unlike 2000, now there's a mechanism for the league over-ruling umps on the field.

metsmarathon wrote: Utley was just suspended 2 games for his illegal slide. Which will probably ensure that utley'sconcussion lifespan exceeds 2 more days. Say, if the slide was illegal... How the ever living fuck was he safe!? Which, of course, makes it, once again, eerily similar to the Clemens violation. If his transgression was worthy of discipline after the game, how was it considered kosher during the game? I tend to feel like, going back at least 20 years, 80% of the appealed suspensions in MLB are resolved by the player getting his suspension cut in half in exchange for dropping the appeal. I imagine that will happen this time.

He's more or less their 25th man, isn't he?

Brett Anderson is in his seventh season and his 10 wins for the first place Dodgers are his most since his rookie year with Colorado. Doesn't strike out a lot of dudes, but keeps the ball in the ballpark. So the Mets are probably going to have to knock him out piecemeal, rather than with one big blow. He comes from the left side, so expect to see the Mets return to Michael Cuddyer back in the lineup, his teammate with the 2014 Rockies (though Terry Collins is reportedly "wavering" on this front. Anderson, as you might expect, features a lot of sinking fastballs, and will surprise with sneaky slider when he needs the punch out. He has a curve and a change that he used more earlier in his career, but now are more for show, as the slider has come along as his second pitch. He's been injured a lot, including TJ surgery. He's has been known for superstitions and (surprise) being the son of a coach (Frank Anderson, currently with the University of Houston). He wears a red beard, but unlike some, trims it like a human being. He also thinks suspending Chase Utley is "a joke" and is willing to mix it up with the trolls in defense of that point. [fimg=500]http://cdn.fansided.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/75/files/2015/05/brett-anderson-mlb-colorado-rockies-los-angeles-dodgers1-850x560.jpg[/fimg] Maybe that's his slider grip, but it's weird. It's like a half-knuckler.

But strangely, not the Hall of Fame Iron Man shortstop with a national youth baseball league named after him.
