  1. That's what you get for wearing Shinjo's number, Duffy.
  2. Matz is over-throwing.
  3. Centerfield wrote: Seriously? How skinny was he before roids? Put it on a bumper sticker "Small guys do it too." Much has been made of Dee Gordon's muscle gain. Going from 145 to around 170 or more, according to Don Mattingly, who had him on both sides of his physical transformation. If I'm MLB's drug police, I'm following Cespedes around like a shadow.
  4. Broadway was already gassed by the time Conforto was up. Maybe he get something back between innings, but I wouldn't be trying to ride him. OE: But he has a quick one.
  5. Put in Campbell! Put in Rivera!! Sacrificing by the Giants? Crazy.
  6. They knocked a pitcher or two out of the box, and have perhaps knocked an announcer out of the booth.
  7. Zvon wrote: The irony is that Bugs was playing against the Giants.
  8. So... this is an inning.
  9. Third base is Pablo Sandoval or Pedro Feliz or Matt Williams or somebody. What the? Matt Duffy? .261 / .305 / .398 // .703 He's probably better than that and was #2 behind Kris Bryant for The Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award last year. Built less like a third baseman and more like one of them long, limber, goofy starting pitchers San Francisco is so good at producing.
  10. This isn't good. There's a winning streak on the line here, man.
  11. Good catch on Sid. I was hoping that the 10 would indicated the year of that undated photo. Is '88 correct? I was thinking Doc was in Ponys (which were standard issue for the Mets in the early 80s, but they had a downward pointing Chevron. OE: Brooks?

  13. Welcome back, Cespedes! Or "Cespedis," the off-brand Greek version. He's good too!
  14. RealityChuck wrote: At the time the signed him, no one in the world though they could get Cespedes, and they didn't sign Yoenis until a month later. I didn't think it was likely, but I certainly thought it was firmly ensconced in the realm of possibility.
  15. It's just sometimes counterintuitive to think of kids descending from parents who played different positions, and I think the brain processes pitchers and hitters like cats and dogs. So unless the name gives it away (like Berra), you're not cued to guess. I knew (thank you, Gary) he was Flash's son, but I wouldn't have guessed based on appearance, because Tom played so many years in the AL.
  16. Such a big part of that team.
  17. I would look a lot less creepy if I showed you what I didn't post. But then I'd look a lot more creepy.
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Could be a good demonstration of the power of rotation depth, as we have Matz-deGrom-Syndergaard on tap, and hard not to predict we get 2 of 3 with those guys going against anybody. I don't know about you guys but it struck me shortly before Tyler Fucking Clippard and Muffy's error combined to ruin everything in Game 4 last year that this depth was the thing that was going to win the World Series for us. And it should have. I tend to think that pitching depth is a great way to build a great team, but not necessarily the best distribution of resources to get you through the post season. At least, that was my conclusion from watching the dynastic Braves coming up short year after year. I mean, eight or nine pitchers can carry you through a season. But you can get through the playoffs with seven. Ease up on the restrictions and ride the best ones a little harder. The World Series? You can pound through that with six guys, if they're the right six guys. If you're Tommy Lasorda, you don't give crap about anybody's future. The future is now! But if you've spent good money on building up far more pitching depth than you need for a short series, money that could have been spent on a slugging infielder, you may not end up being the World Series Champ you've looked like all season long. Regular season baseball and post-season baseball are two different ballgames. I'm not sure how to reconcile that.
  19. Most of the head-to-heading will be after the Wheeler Equinox.
  20. I'm happy to drop it if that's the will of the room. For what it's worth, I try to keep it honorable, using public-facing photos, and avoiding skin shots and anything drunk or embarrassing. I just try to look at it as the family being part of the story. I realize that the WAG cultural movement is full of ogling, gold-digging, trophy-polishing, paparazzi chasing, objectifying and other more dehumanizing stuff. I realize too that the thread lives on a fine line (and one I'm sure I've crossed) but I don't want this to be that.
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: This thread is so consistently creepy! We can't expect these wives to just go on watching themselves!
  22. Staub was due up in the bottom of the fifth. He was getting ready when Berra called on thin to join the diplomatic corps. Things are getting ugly, he's not going to leave the tools of his trade behind. Besides, I think it works better that way. If they all come out in battle gear, it only fires the fans up more. If none of them do, then the mob doesn't know they mean business. But a pleading Mays and an armed and dangerous Staub sort of works on fans like a good cop/bad cop dynamic.
  23. I like the Carli-Ellen Edgin shot. It's like she's looking back at you looking at her. She knows what you're up to!
  24. Someday, the UMDB will be a registration site, and we'll have to log in to vote Schaeffer or leave our dumb memories. But courageous Ben is working overtime to make sure that day isn't upon us just yet, doing all the policing and cleaning up that robots do at registration sites. Ben Grimm, protecting us all from robots.
