Those halcyon days of innocence are gone. Catchers can control pacing. Right there in black and white. Catchers have been guiding pitchers on pacing since forever, helping them speed up when they're in a rhythm, slowing them down when they're scuffling, and helping them mix it up to keep batters and runners off balance. It's a common part of the game.

Pacing the Game and Coordinating with the Pitcher Along with giving signs and controlling the field, the catcher can also be in control of the pace of the game. Pitchers are more effective when they can throw as few pitches as possible and in younger teams, pitch count is watched closely. The pitcher and catcher should talk about the desired pace of the game, especially if the pitcher likes to take his time. The catcher can make the calls slowly, unless the pitcher is in the zone and is pitching well. The catcher needs to be aware of the pace of the game and make sure the calls keep the game moving at the desired pace. Catchers also need to know when the pitcher needs a break, which is the perfect time for the catcher to step out to the mound and have a quick chat with the pitcher. If the game is getting out of control for the pitcher, this is the perfect time for the catcher to visit the mound and give a pep talk to the pitcher. So, cool, now you've heard.
  3. We don't really know at all if that had nothing to do with the catcher.
  4. I didn't consider Ty Kelly, because he's mostly been outfielding this season, but he's definitely in the line of Turner/Satin/Campbell — a utility man who is better on the corners, has to fake it in the middle of the diamond, and has to hit to justify his existence, and will likely be good initially and then start to stink the moment he thinks he has a secure job. Kelly is raking at .418 / .505 / .532 // 1.037 in Vegas. FOUR-EIGHTEEN! You want to at least see if you can catch some of that lightning at the big league level before it burns out.
  5. Strong or not, Plawecki's metrics were surprisingly off the charts last year. That may well speak for the persistent unreliability of catcher defensive metrics, or simply (I suspect) the staff coming on strong during d'Arnaud's absence in the midseason, but it's there.
  6. I like Dilson too, but one problem is that he did his share of first-half damage last year with the bat too. I think they call him up if and when there's some real playing time for him, if and when Wright or Walker go down. He's already first in line to replace Walker next season. That's it. I'm backing Rivera. The Mets have had had a C.J., two D.J.'s, and a J.J., so they need a T.J. Plus, they can add an L.J. next year.
  7. Reynolds has been hit and miss with the bat this year, having some good games but never really getting it going. Another option is Bronx-born T.J. Rivera.
  8. He should have swung the bat, but those were two good sliders. I'm all for replacing him with a more versatile player, but that isn't Dilson.
  9. So, this Rivera guy? Is he, or should he be, the designated Syndercatcher at this point? If you've got to deploy him one game in five, is that the way to do it? And if he is, what does that mean when d'Arnie comes back, assuming he's on his way back? (Bonus Ashie reply: "He's never coming back.") Terry apparently paired them initially to combat the running game that teams were deploying against the big guy. But now, it looks like it's been a benevolent pairing overall.
  10. Man, those 3D cards did nothing for me. What's the point of standing out from the background if the background just looks cloudy milk colored by psychedelic-colored sugary cereal?
  11. Man, the prices on those Noah Syndergaard gnomes really spiked overnight.
  12. St. Lucie is still a tale of Amed Rosario, who is looking more like a star every day, and Wuilmer Becerra, who simply cannot be retired, despite the lack of power thus far. But also worth noting is an absolutely Indomitable bullpen. The squad has thrown 113 2/3 innings thus far, logging a 4-2 record with eight saves and a 2.30 ERA. They've struck out 107 and walked only 34. Subtract a single abortive mopup appearance by starter Scarlyn Reyes (a bullpen interloper!) and that ERA drops to 1.88 Learn those names: Baldonado, Coles, Griset, McGowan, Paez, Peterson, Taylor… some of them are gonna be bringing it in the Mets pen soon. Congratulations to Ted Cruz-faced pitching coach Marc Valdes. 13. Um, sorry, guys. I need to revise this kwiz.
  14. Tonight's game has been brought to you by the Collective Resistance to the Designated Hitter Rule.
  15. Gosh and golly, what a game.
  16. Cabrera is my hera.
  17. Walking Walker to pitch to Campbell only makes sense if you're going to the right-handed reliever.
  18. Tim Teufel using the stop sign a lot against these guys (understandably).
  19. Good try, Syndie.

  22. Daddy needs some sleep. But no way is he missing Syndergaard's next at-bat.
  23. SShhhmoly CRAP!!
  24. This guy really slows down with men on base. C'mon, it's late.
