  1. The other thing is that he's crediting Sabathia for being forthcoming in controlled and prepped interviews on his own terms. More power to him, but whatever you think of Harvey's cutting out, him sitting down right after the game is more like the equivalent of Sabathia talking about his alcoholism the morning after a bender. Sabathia spoke five days after the World Series? Well, that gives Harvey a little over six months to be forthcoming enough to live up to the Sabathia gold standard.
  2. C'mon Mets. These guys have their second baseman in left

I don't, but we've specifically seen him bully his way past Horwitz and Collins. Horwitz is old. Shannon Forde was dying. Collins was — at least at the time of the World Series confrontation — short, old, and without a contract in the most important moment of his baseball life. The catchers are big-league babies fighting for their careers. All of these people, while nominally having some authority over Harvey, arin reality only have juice as long as they can be confident that Alderson has their backs. And with Alderson sick and perhaps not in general circulation (particularly this offseason), that authority seemingly defers to Jeff. And who can feel confident looking to Jeff Wilpon as the strong guy who has your back? So, really, through the last year, the best hope for standing up to Butch in the last year has been David Wright. And Wright spent a good deal of that time away from the team.
  4. Don't know what the policy will be at the big league level, but the Dodgers have been totally kid gloving it with this young man, not allowing him to go more 82 pitches in a single game. Even if he's on his game, a battling Mets team should be able to get past that threshold by the end of the fourth.
  5. There's certainly that. I wonder how much Sandy being sick has put the team in a position where folks can't push back while feeling that their back is covered all the way to top.

    Game 6

Was there any real-time controversy over Clemens's departure from the game?
  7. And while the Mets certainly have a media staff that can train (or at least guide) him, Harvey has bullied his way through them too, seemingly caught up in the notion that until he gets the big payday, everybody associated with the organization is the enemy.
  8. So, if you want to see that narrative, you have to make the uncomfortable choice, either Wright is an overbearing hardass, or Harvey is a self-centered and disruptive diva. You don't have to see that narrative. You can believe too much is being made of nothing, and we're drawing inferences from an exchange on video that aren't necessarily there. But if you do see something, that's where you're at.
  9. It should be a movie. Vin Scully Reads the Phone Book, coming soon to a theater near you.
  10. I think a bullpen assignment for Harvey needs not necessarily pre-schedule his appearances.
  11. Newsday used to give out Marvin Miller Awards about two months into every season, honoring the players most in need of a strike.
  12. A 19-year-old left-handed starting pitcher signed out of Mexico by the Dodgers? I'm thinking, please don't tell me he throws the screwball. I looked for pictures to see if he was portly. Evidence suggest he's not, but he does have this cool left eye thing happening. [fimg=250]http://dodgersway.com/files/2015/03/julio-urias-mlb-los-angeles-dodgers-photo-day.jpg[/fimg] Turns out he had a benign mass removed last year. It looks like those photos are pre-surgery. [fimg=300]https://mlb.traderumors.com/files/2016/05/Urias.Julio_.jpg[/fimg]
  13. Ichiro is still at it, getting playing time, and — unfathomably — he's been really good.
  14. This was almost guaranteed to happen. Eric O'Flaherty has been no more effective for the Braves than he was for the Mets last year, and so their primary left-handed reliever has become Hunter Cervenka, who looks 26 going on 50. Dario has a AAA ERA barely out of the double digits, but his strikeout numbers were prodigious. Since the end of last season, he had fallen from second to about sixth in the depth chart of left-handed relievers, so he was expendable, but as always, it would have been nice to get something for him.
  15. Alex Wood if he could.
  16. I'm not saying you absolutely have to produce in the little time you may or may not get as a big leaguer this season, Ty Kelly. All I'm saying is that you cost at least one guy his Metly existence. 17. There's always somebody fishing for left-handed relief, and if that somebody is the bottom-feeding Atlanta Braves, a little thing like a 9.98 ERA in Las Vegas isn't going to scare them away. 1) Dario was the only (and therefore best) 68 in Mets history. 2) Used the slide step as a matter of course. He hardly pitched enough to build up a data set, but I bet he was a helluva tough assignment to steal against. 3) He had washed out as a Phillies prospect and was utterly at sea for three years, unattached to any known record-keeping league for about three years, when the Mets hauled him in. 4) He's faced Bryce Harper exactly once, and struck Harper out for his first big league win.
  18. Lucie is still about great bullpenning, Amed Rosario, and Wiulmer Becerra, but recently a new hero has arisen in one Kevin Taylor. The indy league reclamation project has played most every day, alternating between left, first and third, thumping to the tune of a .323 / .437 / .455 // .892 slashy slashy line. He's in something of a slump, going 5-33 over his last 10 games, so you can imagine how lofty he was before that. Among the awesome bullpen numbers, I particularly want to call attention to the Eckerslevian line of one Kevin McGowan: 23 innings, one walk 27 strikeouts. Not shown in the numbers below is tonight's result, in which the Lucies won 2-1, despite getting out-hit 9-4. That doesn't sound all that different from how the Mets have been winning of late, when they have been winning. The Mets of the Florida State League have won but four of the last 10, but still hang on in a first place tie at 24-21 in the FSL South Division, along with the villainous Jupiter Hammerheads, with the Bradenton Marauders and the Fort Myers Miracle but a single game behind. IT'S A DOGFIGHT DOWN THERE! 19. Yeah, well, that's part of the post-game summary. You, Grandy. What the fuck was that 0-4 about? I just pulled your ass over on I-99 going from State College into Altoona! You want out of Happy Valley? Do it with your BAT! Matt, Reynolds! Great, you got a hit! You know what that makes you? A .111 hitter! Interstate 11 isn't even OPEN YET! You're just driving around the sands around Boulder City, Nevada. Get out! René Rivera! Your big hit still only gets you up to .136. I don't think there is even a proposed I-36, so you're just driving around zonked out of your head. Show some pride, gentlemen!

  21. Wrinkle in the plan: Pads sat Will Myers last night with a forearm strain. They may end up calling up Loney themselves.
  22. ERIC CAMPBELL 0-2 and BACK ON THE INTERSTATE! Don't you guys ever learn? Congratulations on your first hit, Matt Reynolds, but your still at .143. Exit ramp is THAT WAY, son.
  23. I'm guessing he talks to the press before his next start. I don't go for that definition of insanity. It's not a real definition of insanity for one thing. For another, sometimes continuing on the same course despite failure does indeed lead to success. Nothing crazy about that. That said, I'm not sure what I'd do. Probably the pen. Swap him with Verrett.
  24. It's punishment from the fates for exiling Anthony Recker, I tells ya. The universe sent us an angel and we SENT HIM AWAY!
  25. Stream-of-consciousness transgressive typing, with Eric Campbell on my brain. What can I say.
